of japan like i was the man and sure enough got some customs issues again my goodness um wow all right shipping if you're going to ship something u.s domestic use ups if it's high dollar value have them pack it in the store then they are responsible for the full value but if you're gonna ship international dhl is the best and usually this with this seller out of ebay you know who you are usually they figure this stuff out for me but every now and then i'll get a dhl shipment coming out of japan or germany typically where the seller did not fill out the correct customs forms and now it's on me to solve it why because i'm a man of action that's what's up and if you rely on your seller to fix it let's be blunt by the time the shipment gets into customs and needs this fix it's already in the cincinnati hub you might as well step up step in and get it done instead of you know running the risk of it going back to the seller and a big mess so dhl customs this one's for you baby all right so i got a text usually it's by text saying oh there's a problem with your shipment blah blah blah blah and it has a link uh copy that link out of the text email it to yourself log in on your computer and this is what you're going to see first of all you have to confirm that it's the correct way bill hit continue and it brings you to this the dreaded clocks and watches worksheet uh screen so gosh it's so dumb how come they just don't do it right every time makes no sense so right here is the download form button and you can click this and download it unfortunately their pdf form is actually not a former template it's a two-page pdf first page instructions second page you have to print out and fill out by hand unless you are a friend in this hobby of ours uh if you run down this road and totally sort you out on that so this is the instruction screen and the number one most important thing is get the math right it doesn't matter if the math is accurate in terms of its breakdown of the movement case strap and etc all that matters is that the amount you declare per item adds up to the penny to the amount the shipper declared it so in this example which i don't like because it's a battery one um the movement 850 case 25 strap 100 battery 25 this is madness the important thing to note here is that it all adds up to be the amount that is declared right there this is what it looks like this is my version of the file which again i converted it i'm not a genius i just i have a i have a full version of acrobat adobe acrobat so i converted it you can have it too if you want it this is what it looks like with all of the relevant fields converted to um you know you can do digital data entry top to bottom i got it coming in from japan the air way bell today's date it's a mechanical movement now the way i broke this down does it adhere to a certain amount of wristwatch valuation what i mean by that in this case the watch is steel so the strap or the bracelet a regular bracelets 250 bucks a case a replacement case around about 400 bucks and then i put the bulk of the money into the movement in this case in this example it's relevant that this totals up to be what is that 12. 14.50 so in this case 1450 was the amount on the declaration page of the importation that is the most important figure as long as all three or four sections add up to the to be that amount and it is some reasonable logical expression of a breakdown you will be just fine do yourself a favor look if it's a if it's a mechanical or automatic movement look up the movement for the piece and figure out how many jewels are in it it's two google clicks away and the more valid your submission is the quicker it will get through customs and lastly my name is not joe shmoe my name is d but you need to do a digital signature here all i do is i open windows paint scribble through it save that as a jpeg and when i pull up the pdf form you can take it into four mode and paste it in there if you are not able to do a pdf form all you have to do is fill out the pdf template that i send you take a snapshot of it with you know windows or apple screen grab treat it like a picture do the scroll of your signature copy and paste it in just so that it looks good so once you've got that form filled out you will come back to the dhl express website and you'll go to the submit information button once you click it you need to write some kind of little comment in the comment box you can copy this hey yo please review the attached customs declaration thank you and upload the file and uh typically within a day it's done so the shakedown don't bother expecting the shipper to fix it if they were smart enough or dutiful enough to get it right the first time we wouldn't be here there is no use in emailing them waiting for them to fix it hoping they know how to fix something with dhl which is a lot more difficult than submitting the customs declaration in the first place fixing is always harder do it yourself so once you get this notification call dhl give them the wave bill number ask them for the declared value that is on the way bill and in what currency it is declared it's not always usd obviously my frame i'm operating out of the u.s but if i buy from europe euros if i'm buying from the uk your gbp if i'm getting a switzerland swiss francs you have to figure it out ask them twice and
