if you had to pick one place to Source new inventory from for the rest of your life where would you pick for the last 2 years I've been keeping very detailed accurate records of my part-time reselling business in those two years I've spent a total of $ 32,2 188 buying $ 6,689 items to resell with a total list value on eBay of $265,100 strategy in no particular order they are garage sales estate sales thrift stores Church sales flea markets liquidation pallets and retail stores but which of those has made me the most money which has yielded the highest Roi and brought in the biggest net return and if I had to pick only one of those to focus on exclusively for the rest of my reselling career which one would it be in today's video I'm going to answer those questions and talk through each of my sourcing locations and rank them from least profitable to most let's dig in we're going to start start out with my least favorite place to Source new inventory and also the least profitable retail stores you know places like Target Walmart Home Depot or Lowe's sourcing from stores like this is also known as Retail Arbitrage as you can see here I don't do a ton of retail sourcing though lots of resellers Source exclusively from retail and make great money doing it personally I'm just not a huge fan a big part of why I like reselling is the treasure hunting aspect of it all I love finding weird old quirky things and even more so if they're worth a lot of money these are not the types of things that you're going to see in a retail environment typically and so I end up finding this kind of sourcing a little boring I very rarely go to a retail store for the sole purposes of finding items to flip online for a profit however when I'm at a retail store for my own personal shopping I will often keep an eye out for discounted items that sell for more online this embarrasses my kids so it's a double win over the past 2 years I bought a total of only 30 items from retail and netted just $544 so it's obviously not a big part of my reselling strategy while you can find profitable items in retail stores in my experience the margins are way lower than pretty much any other sourcing methods because the cost of goods is generally higher for example my average Roi across all sourcing locations is about 600% and over the last 2 years sourcing at retail my average Roi is only 321 per. that's still a really good return but compared to the other sources like thrift stores and garage sales it's way lower and I don't have as much fun doing it so I don't buying pallets of liquidated or return products is next on the list over the last 2 years I've clocked an average return on investment of 379 buying pallets of goods to resell typically the pallets I buy are Amazon returns personally I'm not a huge fan of this sourcing strategy either it's a great way to get a lot of inventory quickly but the reason the ROI for pallets is so low compared to other sourcing methods is because you just can't guarantee what you're going to get so it's almost like buying a mystery box which is fun but rarely a smart investment while it can be ENT aining to buy a pallet and dig through it all in my experience the ratio of sellable items to cheap Chinese junk that has no value on the secondary Market is way too low if I pay 500 bucks for a pallet that $500 get split evenly for cost of goods across however many sellable items I end up pulling from the pallet to resell so if 100 sellable items come off of a pallet that's $5 cost of goods on average but if only 10 come out the cost of goods is 50 it's really tough to assess how many sellable items you will get get from a pallet until after you buy it take it home and unload it I've never lost money on a pallet that I've bought but the amount of time and the effort it takes to load transport unload sort list and discard the unsellable garbage from a pallet is way higher than most other sourcing strategies over the past 2 years I've netted $2,833 reselling items sourced from Liquidation pallets I'd imagine I will continue to buy pallets occasionally when the mood strikes but it won't make up a significant part of my reselling strategy strategy anytime soon on to the next one flea markets are a fun and interesting way to get new inventory and people watch over the last 2 years I have averaged an 810 per return on investment making it the sixth most profitable on the list I really enjoy going to flea markets but they are not all created equally and sometimes I feel like I might get stabbed first most people selling at flea markets are resellers themselves and have a pretty good idea of the value of what they're selling but because of this I also feel more comfortable negotiating prices that's something you can't do at thrift stores and most estate sales and I avoid doing it at garage sales I have found plenty of great stuff to resell of the last 2 years going to flea markets I've bought 561 items and made a net profit of $ 9,359 I have a pretty good local flea market that runs every Sunday year round and while many of the vendors are seasoned resellers themselves there are still plenty of people just looking to unload their inventory and I have found some pretty great deals if you have a regular flea market near you I recommend you go often and get to know the vendors many of the best deals I've gotten over the years have come from the relationships that I have built they know I resell but we are happy to work out deals that make sense for both parties okay what's next thrift stores are one of my favorite ways to Source new inventory and in fact it's my number one on the list in terms of the amount that I've bought with 1,64 items over the last 2 years but items bought at thrift stores only generated an $800 44% Roi which puts it at number five on the list of my most profitable places to Source obviously this is because the cost of goods at thrift stores are generally higher than most other sourcing methods except for retail which brings down the return on investment but you just can't beat thrift stores for finding new inventory even if the costs are higher there is essentially a NeverEnding supply of goods brought in on a daily basis I'm not going to spend too much time talking about the best way to maximize your success at thrift stores because I have a separate video that is entirely focused on just that I'll link it above and in the description below but over the last 2 years I have netted $ 24,95 from inventory sourced from a variety of thrift stores which makes up nearly 30% of my total reselling Revenue thrift stores are not dead y'all number four on the list of most profitable places to Source are estate sales coming in at an average of 892 per return on investment over the last 2 years I spent $2,415 at estate sales buying $825 items which has netted me $3,157 I like going to estate sales and they make up a large part of my sourcing strategy especially during the winter months when garage sales have died down personally I don't really like the competitive nature of estate sales on opening day so I tend to almost always go on the second or even third day and I never really wait in line to be one of the first ones in this is why my Roi is on the higher side because on the second and third days typically things are being sold for 25 to 50% off off the original price and so the inventory can be quite cheap and obviously I'm missing out on higher quality items by not being there on the first day but there's still plenty of good inventory to be had on the second or third days if you know what to look for I primarily use estat sales.net to find them in my area but Craigslist is also great because estate sales that show up there are typically not run by the big companies and in my experience a private run estate sale is almost always better because they often do not have the same level of expertise in marketing and pricing and so there are are fewer competitive Shoppers and prices can be really great in at number three on the list of most profitable are garage sales which is probably my favorite way to Source new inventory my average Roi on items bought at garage sales comes in at a whopping 945 per. garage sales are also second on the list in terms of total items purchased with 1,435 over the last 2 years and in 2 years I netted a total of $27,800 from stuff bought at garage sales I've been going to garage Sal since I was a kid in my experience there's no better way to Source inventory for cheap not every garage sale is inexpensive of course you're going to run into some that don't quite understand the concept of a garage sale and think it's appropriate to charge retail prices but fortunately they are in the minority most people just want to get rid of their stuff and would rather get a few bucks for it than donating it to a thrift store plus they're just fun you never really know what you're going to find the only real downside I can think of is that depending on where you live you may need to do a cons considerable amount of driving to get to them I find most of my garage sales in a few different ways I use the yard sale Treasure Map app which used to be amazing when they were integrated with Craigslist but Craig gave them the boot and so it has become a less reliable way to find sales even so this is the first app I check on Saturday mornings I also check Craigslist directly because it is still commonly used in my area but this depends heavily on where you live so it may not be as good for you Facebook Marketplace is also a place where you can find garage sales but it can be an annoying experience often when searching for sales you will get results from weeks or even months in the past hopefully you notice that before driving across town to get to one here's a trick though when you search for garage sales on Facebook add this string to the end of the URL that will filter out results older than 24 hours don't worry I'll put it in the description below so you can copy and paste in it number two on the list of most profitable is online sourcing online is not something I do all that frequently but when I do the ROI is huge in at 1,942 on average over the last 2 years I bought a total of 455 items and netted $7 7,969 from a variety of sources online by online I mean anything from Craigslist to Facebook Marketplace to auctions on estate sales.net and other auction sites my Roi is so high with the sourcing method because I almost never buy a single thing at once when sourcing online it's always many things in one bulk purchase so my cost of goods typically ends up being very low I've used Facebook in particular to find some incredible bulk lot deals for example last year I cleared out the basement of a hoarder's house who had a pension for collecting vintage kitchen wear for a couple hundred bucks I loaded up an entire box truck of inventory that ended up averaging out to less than a dollar per item part of how I landed on this deal is by hacking the Facebook Marketplace URLs like I showed you earlier with the garage sale trick I have a separate video that talks about even more Facebook URL hacks like that if it's something you're interested in I'll link it above in in the description below that leaves us with one more the most profitable way that I Source new inventory for reselling and that is the church sale over the last 2 years my average Roi for inventory bought at church sales tops out at a whopping 2 24% I love a good church sale they combine the scale of inventory of thrift stores with the prices of garage sales plus lots of friendly old people and bake Goods the only downside of church sales is that they don't happen often and I have yet to find a reliable way to to know when they pop up I mostly rely again on Craigslist and Facebook but people who run Church sales are rarely techsavvy I mostly find out about them the oldfashioned way by noticing a sign outside of the church when I happen to drive by but for whatever reason Church sales in my area can be intense often lines will be wrapped around the building waiting to get in and some even have an early bird option that lets you pay some small fee to get in the night before which I'm happy to do one of my favorite Church sale finds was this Casio watch from 1987 still in the packaging I bought it for $3 and sold it for $131 if I was forced to pick only one place to Source new inventory from for the rest of my
