welcome to this episode of dream farm it's been a while since we've produced one of these videos and if you're new to the channel you might not realize we actually produce two series here we produce the dream farm series which really focuses on Land Management uh deer management you know topics related to land ownership and we produced the Bing white tail series which really focuses on the deer hunting strategy we try to keep them separate you know sometimes I cross over just a little bit on these series but uh I want to make sure that people who aren't interested or who don't own land uh don't get bogged down in in some of the content that's related to that topic so anyway on today's episode of dream farm I want to talk about my Consulting business and I also want to roll that into a discussion of what I would tell myself if I was Consulting on my farm dream farm is brought to you by whail Institute research equals results huntstand Pro white tail app hoit archery Stealth cam trail cameras Wildlife farming and pH Outdoors food plot drills uh the Consulting business is not a big part of what I do I go on about 10 or 15 visits a year and I don't really want it to get any bigger than that but I do see an opportunity in this it seems like there's a lot of people that are interested in having somebody come on their property that's got some years of experience and uh maybe can help them save them some time I mean I've been doing it since 1995 I've I've owned a hunting land since 1995 so there's a lot of stuff that I've learned the hard way that some of it's pretty practical Common Sense stuff but some of it's a little bit more uh in-depth and a little bit more complicated related to a lot of factors that are harder to control uh so anyway my point is uh people see the need for this service because it can save them years of mistakes but I can't like I said I don't have any interest in getting growing this business and uh so I I can't really take on a lot more clients if you're interested I've still got some spots for this coming year but but what I've done instead is I've partnered with whail Institute and they have What's called the next level Consulting service and uh jod holbrooks heads that up he's their lead biologist in charge of the Consulting service and I'm going to support them uh in their efforts especially in the midwest that's my strength is understanding The Herd Dynamics the human dynamics uh hunting strategies you know Tree locations the types of terrain and and cover that we Face uh the challenges that we have related to weather rut timing all that stuff really I'm stronger in the midwest than I am in a lot of other parts of the country so I can help them here as they expand their service into this area I can join them on some of their visits but uh in a lot of other cases I can just help them with their plans you know as they draw their plans up to to help the land owners so that's that's kind of where you'll find my service now going forward is uh through the white till Institute Next Level Consulting service and I'll put a link to that in the description section of the video here and you can check that out if you're interested in even either having uh myself uh show up on on your property or uh one of the experts from the white tail Institute so now let's get let's get down to what I would do or what I would tell myself if Bill winky called me up and said hey I need you to come to my farm and uh tell me what I need to do differently what I need to do better uh this is this is what I would do this is how I would approach it every situation is so unique every Farm every property is different every neighborhood is different the herd Dynamics the the structure of the cover the mix of of egg to Habitat is so different in in different places that you can never just have a standard answer where you just say okay this is how you manage deer and this is how you manage land because it's not a one- siiz fits all not even in the midwest not even in one County uh within an area because like I said every property has so many unique challenges and opportunities that you really need to to dial it in when you get there but the first thing I do and usually it's well in advance on the telephone I'll ask the land owner what their goals are what is really your goal what are you trying to achieve with this property seems to come back to the same thing I want to shoot more big antler bucks usually is the answer but sometimes it's a little bit narrower sometimes it really focuses in on habitat and they'll say well I'm trying to figure out what to do with these you know 75 Acres of open ground that I've got that I'm not going to be farming in the future what shall I do with this you know how do I uh how do I set this up for the maximum hunt ability and the maximum benefit for my farm sometimes surprisingly I'll have clients that that uh want me to come and tell them whether or not they should keep the land or sell it uh you know and I've had a couple of those what solution then do I have for Bill winky what advice would I offer and obviously it's what I'm doing you know because you know I'd be silly to to have these goals and then not do what I think I need to do to achieve them uh that means keeping the population down it means being really aggressive early on with the habitat projects habitat first really focus on that food you know obviously food plots you're starting to develop these locations I don't have probably as many food pots as I will have someday uh I'm sure that you know several years out from now I'm going to have even more because the population will start to come up a little bit and I do want to keep the pressure off the native habitat I want to keep the Brows you know at its best so I want to make sure that I've got a lot of opportunity for the deer to feed you know on on lots of different things so that would be my goal that's what my situation would be you know if I was Consulting in my farm I would spend a lot of time showing me uh how to do the TSI you know what to cut uh which stumps to kill versus which ones to leave alive so that you know the deer can eat the regrowth off those stumps how to burn why to burn um you know find some available local resources to help you with these things it's a lot of work um managing this prop these properties can be a lot of work so just being able to find help uh the whole thing you got to have a plan of action uh the theory is great but when I leave a property I want to make sure that they have a plan of action like actual steps you're going to do this then you're going to do this and then just come up with a list of of items um that they need to check off if you're interested contact directly and uh you know start working with those guys which indirectly or directly you could be working with me that way too back in August the white Hill Institute team Jody and uh Carol and Joyce uh came to my farm and took a look at it to give me you know their thoughts on what I can do differently here and it was eye opening there was some stuff that I learned that that uh you know as we went through the place that I thought was pretty good information and and I'm glad they came but it was a good chance for me to meet them and talk about what I do you know when I'm on site and then get a better idea of what they do so that I can help them to uh you know not only promote but to execute their Consulting service so that'll be we filmed that so that's going to be in an episode here um sometime in the next few weeks you know the actual visit of The whail Institute Consultants the next level Consultants on my farm and uh that was that was a lot of fun so I'm going to leave it
