Local bill format for Product Management

hi everyone my name is liam i'm a product manager at google and i was a program manager at microsoft before so today we're going to be talking about rocking the resume and this fits under the kind of higher level theme of actually getting the interview with the company that you want to be a product manager at and the first thing that interviewers and uh recruiters actually will see is your resume so we got to make sure that it's it's like perfect today we're gonna go over five kind of chapters on how to make a significantly better resume and the first chapter is talking about the structure and kind of just some overall basics so let's start with some high-level overall basic tips of a resume first you need the contact information to be at the top uh this includes your phone number and email you don't necessarily need to have your address on there no one's going to be sending you mail unless it's like an offer letter and in that case you'll be in a great relationship with your recruiter to talk about that one thing that i cannot stress enough is that content is king on a resume i can't talk about other things like design but for product management the design of your resume the amount of colors the photos none of that matters content is kink this should be kind of a given but also no jokes no inappropriate language don't put you know swears in there and then also every 10 years of experience you add one page to your resume there's content is king and then also don't lie um exaggeration is fine you can round some numbers up you can you know add a little plus sign next to things that's okay but line you know about the title of your position or the amount of you know to an order of magnitude the difference between like the teams that reported up to you there's no need to do that the technology industry especially you know for product management is a very small uh kind of group of people word will get around and you don't want to have that label on your name if you have any guilt maybe think about it again so the structural resume is super important and there's a bunch of different ways you could take this but my suggestion is actually to just keep into five and potentially four categories education being the first one experience being second and then if you have other experience let's say for example as opposed to internships maybe you started a kind of side hustle clothing business that would go under other experience you have skills and then you have miscellaneous or other or just kind of more interesting things about you and we'll go over each one of these in depth so chapter two education this is super important and we're going to suggest you put it at the top and just immediately get it over with what education you have i split this into two sections as well it really depends if you're a student so let's say you're you're a student currently um undergrad grad school you want to show your gpa on the united states skill above a 3.0 show your gpa if it's below maybe leave it off there for now you want to show more in-depth uh kind of information about what clubs and activities and extracurriculars you took part of as well as show what leadership positions you had in those activities and clubs you know showing that you're just doing more than studying right like you have good grades but you're also you know doing a lot of activities outside of the classroom now if you're not a student put your education at the top again the same rule of thumb add your gpa if the gpa is above a 3.0 if it's below just don't add it that's okay a quick summary of clubs and activities and extracurriculars that you did but we don't have to go too in depth we want to focus on the experience at that point once you're out of education this is more of a check box like okay has higher education did some activities and has a decent gpa okay next chapter three experience i can't stress this enough as well this is the most important part of your resume so the goal of the experience section overall is that this is the core of your resume this is where you really show that you're a product manager you want to organize these experience sections chronologically don't break the rule you know even if third down looks better don't put at the top it's quite confusing you really just want to show what you did most recently at the top and it kind of just goes down from there in each section in each job you want to include the legal job title that you had the company the months the years that you work there you don't want to exaggerate or lie about these things and then also you know your most recent job experience it should have the most bullet points and we'll go into bullet points more in a little bit if there's enough space you can add a one-liner explanation if the company is not like a household brand it might be a good idea to just say what does this company do now let's jump into how to write good bullet points for each of these job sections this is really important and what you're going to do is treat this like a story there's going to be a beginning a middle and an end and what i'm doing here is kind of outlining a couple questions you could ask yourself to help make sure that you have a really nice story going through your bullet points what is the problem or opportunity that's kind of the beginning of your story the the middle is going to be you know how did you fix it or like go after it right like you saw the problem uh you saw the opportunity like what did you do and then finally you're gonna end it on the end of the story which is your impact and results and this is where i see a lot of kind of mistakes happening is you want to really nicely tie this experience with a bow and say okay you know i went through this whole story i went through all these challenges and this is what came out of it now let's talk a bit about how to show impact correctly in these bullet points my tip for people to show impact really easily is to just add numbers and it's kind of difficult actually so i'm trying to to try and help you find the numbers and you know the reason for doing this is it shows scale it shows that you're more analytical as well i mean that's kind of a stretch but it shows scale and finding numbers is tough so i've come up with a couple questions to kind of spark your your brain and and it'll help you kind of brainstorm to find more numbers how many team members were involved like how many dollars estimated did this increase revenue something along those lines and let me show you some examples on how this can be used so here we have kind of an average three bullets you worked hard to influence stakeholders without authority about a new it product you convinced the engineering team and design team to build this new it product and then we shipped the it product to a few customers without any bugs within a year cool you thought of something you built it and you shipped it but i don't really know much about it right i don't know the scale of it i don't know the impact let's rewrite this discovered a five billion dollar market within uh x space and created a document outlining the opportunity then with that document i collaborated with 10 plus engineers and designers to build an mvp from scratch for our customers we shipped the product onboarded two customers and created five million dollars in revenue on year one that is a totally different story than what we saw on the first bullet and it was just by adding more numbers now that we've shown impact and we've completely changed the outcome of this resume basically by adding numbers let's go back to that story and it's kind of difficult to think of a story right like and here's some tips on how to get started for each one of those bullet points in the beginning you might use some words such as analyzed initiated founded in the middle of your story you're going to talk more about how you secured something you built something you designed it you put the work into actually building what you were talking about in the beginning of your story and then towards the end you want to talk about results you want to say i was earned something i succeeded i completed i boosted i generated and you kind of have these nice result impact-y words so we've talked about kind of building out that story here are a couple things you should not do don't you know use multiple bullets to explain what the company does maybe a one-liner if you really think it's essential but don't you know have bullet points with actual information be sacrificed to telling the story of the company that's not the point of the resume it's about you the second thing is don't reformat the job responsibilities you can try to go look for a job description of a job similar to yours you know make sure it doesn't look like the description of the job the fourth chapter is about skills and this is kind of a controversial section for me but i'll tell you why so the reason why i think skills is a bit controversial is because i've seen too often people adding a ton of skills and then not having space for experience remember experience is the most important thing if skills got to go let them go that's okay so there is an importance for skills though the goal of skills is to have hard relevant skills and again if you find that you have space for this section just make sure it's very specific and very relevant to the job you're applying to also in these skills like we said kind of having hard skills avoid soft skills in there like good communicator public speaking or your collaborative these should be almost default anyway if you're applying for being a product manager but then also they can come out in your experience try to weave that into the stories that you put in your experience section in the format of this section i would say a list you want to be very space efficient with your resume so the leftmost skills in this horizontal list are the ones you're the best at and the right most skills are the ones that you're like i'm okay at way too often have i seen people adding charts and graphs and there's no need for this it's a waste of space uh remember the most important thing is content is king and i cannot stress this enough um if you're running out of room do not add this section so the last chapter miscellaneous so what is the goal of the miscellaneous section right the goal is to show that you're an interesting person outside of work and you're curious about other things not just work this could be one line it could be two um don't get out of hand that's okay it's meant as a conversation starter an example from one of my best friends cyrus he works in chicago right now as a product manager he's a professional dj he's coordinated with venues that gross you know 10 to 15 million dollars across hundreds of events in the midwest and has 1600 fans and you can see you know cyrus has like an interesting hobby going on the side he's got like a side gig or something it shows you're a well-rounded person and you know you bring some a different background to the company the well i guess like bonus chapter chapter six out of five i don't know uh it's actually i'm going to show you my resume uh this is a resume that i actually use to apply as a product manager at google and at microsoft i redacted some numbers in there that might be you know not supposed to get out to the public you can use that maybe as a template you can see how i structure my bullet points i kind of split the sections out a bit i removed the skills section i added a entrepreneurial experience section but this has been kind of to show you an example of a resume that is you know it's not pretty but the content is pretty good like all of my other you know lessons in this in this course this crazy journey all the slides will be linked below all the content is linked below as well um you can
