breaks your company so let's talk about how to go about getting your first three customers first off let me tell you that getting your first customer can be really hard the problem when you're first getting started is many times you don't have references to share with prospective customers because those prospective customers want at least three references you know it was an excellent proposal yeah I'm going in the office I'm going to talk to my boss about it but I'm gonna need three references no no no don't worry about it yeah jumping in the car hitting home for the day yes the boss had a chance to go over the proposal he loved it he just didn't see your references no it was a great proposal but I noticed that you didn't include three references could you throw in three otherwise I can't do anything with it yes three no your mother would not count as a reference so a lot of startups ask me what's the best place or way to find new customers the answer is there is no correct place way or strategy to find customers when you're just getting started you're essentially doing everything to figure out what works best for you so what do I mean by everything here's a list of ways that I would pursue new customers if I had a new security guard company first is social selling social selling is when sales people use social media to interact directly with their prospects with social selling after connecting with the prospect using social media salespeople will provide value to that prospect by answering questions the prospect might have about their industry and also offering a thoughtful content until that prospect is ready to buy social media is one of the best things that has ever happened to small businesses social media gives you the opportunity to bypass the gatekeeper and get directly to the decision maker for more on social selling click the link above up there someplace second in the list is search engine optimization or SEO SEO is the art and science of getting websites to rank higher in search engines such as google without paying for it for example if you are security guard company in Chicago when someone searches Google for Chicago security guard company calling in some of my other videos so I won't talk about it now just go check out the video linked here for tips on cold calling knocking on doors is so 1980s but again it's an easy way of getting information quickly we are driving if you see a location that has a security officer make sure that you take a moment to stop and talk to that security officer or better yet stop in and get the contact information for the person responsible for managing the security contract once you've done that time to get to work building your relationship lastly the most valuable form of finding new customers is asking people for referrals because you're a new company you may not have the ability to ask existing customers for referrals but you do have a network of friends and family clients of companies that you work for before and many other sources that you can tap tap your existing network and let everyone know that you are open for business my guess is someone will be able to point you in the right direction remember in the beginning there is no right way of finding new customers you have to try everything and then double down on what starts to work for you in summary there are six different methods for finding potential customers some efforts are more technical while others are more labor-intensive the six methods are one social selling to search engine optimization or SEO
