The BEST Decision We Made

What do you like best?

We were previously using an all-paper hiring and on-boarding method. We switched all those documents over to Sign Now, and our whole process is so much easier and smoother. We have 7 terminals in 3 states so being all-paper was cumbersome and, frankly, silly. We've removed so much of the burden from our terminal managers so they can do what they do: manage the business.

Easy to use, increases productivity

What do you like best?

I love that I can complete signatures and documents from the phone app in addition to using my desktop. As a busy administrator, this speeds up productivity . I find the interface very easy and clear, a big win for our office. We have improved engagement with our families , and increased dramatically the amount of crucial signatures needed for our program. I have not heard any complaints that the interface is difficult or confusing, instead have heard feedback that it is easy to use. Most importantly is the ability to sign on mobile phone, this has been a game changer for us.

it's just me I think my volume was loud Nicole Nicole's looking at me like what what's wrong oh I think it was my volume um so I'm excited that you guys are here today we are talking about day in the life of jobs and healthcare administration and what I want to talk about are topics that I believe are going to support folks who are brand new to the industry so really just kind of a comprehensive discussion about different a couple of different roles in healthcare administration and so when you get here let me know that you're here you can pop something in the comments below and hello be blue blue butterfly goodness I'm tongue twister today it's great to see you thanks for hanging out um how did you get started in in healthcare I'm very curious to know some of our regulars that come how did you guys break into the industry a lot of us started um and some of the roles that I'm going to talk about today and I would love to just encourage those of you who are brand new to the world and interested in kind of this very initial um getting a sense of what roles are out there and just trying to understand what's possible before you take a deep dive into applying for jobs and so hopefully today we'll give you what you need to know about the industry about the roles as I talk through some of the stuff that takes place in the world of healthcare um so I'm excited to share we'll talk about this a couple of different times today but we have another webinar coming up really soon and this webinar is one that is geared or oriented towards those individuals who are looking to to break in to healthc Care by way of healthcare administration so we often talk I refer to it as a business of healthare because it really is the back end it's the engine that keeps the medical the the healthc care industry in the US rolling which is what we work in here um often in this channel we're talking medical billing we're talking front office management we're talking office management practice management right we talk a lot of different things that are typically forgotten about right as patients we go see our providers but there's all this other that takes place in a medical practice that happens behind the scenes and we often don't interact with it very often unless we are getting a prescription getting a referral or getting a medical bill which nobody wants but those are the ways that we typically interact with the business of healthcare or healthcare administration so before we get started oh let's see let's so blue butterfly sharing the story thank you so much for sharing okay I was in the indry a couple years ago ended during the pandemic but looking to get back into it yay awesome I'm so excited to hear that well excited that you are hanging out with us and um learning I'm glad that you um keep coming back so thank you for your for your support we really appreciate it and if you guys are hanging out for the first time you haven't given a like or a thumbs up you could just let the algorithm know that you like what you're listening to on the channel and my friends who I keep coming back but haven't hit that subscribe button do me a favor and do that please it really helps the channel also lets the algorithm know that um you like what you're listening to so today let's talk about healthcare administration so when we we open up this conversation of healthcare administration a lot of us who have been in healthcare for a long time don't really use that term because for us the idea of administration comes from administrators and it's not a common term that we refer to but in the world of business it's a very common term that is utilized to refer to the business of healthcare so the back end of healthcare the areas where the paperwork happens or the ad Administration the management of the Health Care on the back end takes place and so when we say a healthcare administration we aren't really talking only about health care administrators meaning the CEOs and um managers and kind of upper level leaders of healthcare we are talking about folks who are involved in the paperwork or the administration of the health care process in a practice right or in a in a hospital system okay so I want to make sure we're clear and that we're on the same page as far as what exactly that means because I know a lot of you who've been in the industry a long time like me I hear that term and I'm like H what exactly does that refer to when someone says healthcare administration and so healthcare administration can can run the gamut as far as roles and per um positions out there and if you go to indeed or um uh Career Builders or any of those other job searching applications Monster jobs anything like that if you type in healthcare administration you'll oftentimes get a mixed bag of potential um roles that exist out there and so just for for the sake of of today I looked it up right before we got on just to kind of get a sense so I just searched in my local area healthcare administration and um I'm in Charlotte North Carolina in case you don't know that um and I got a clinic manager for a home health clinic which is interesting because they're typically Home Health which they're agency V visits they don't they don't have an office manager per se but home the clinic a clinical manager meaning the the um the patient facing side right um we also have a dental office manager we have practice manager we have scheduling and patient relations coordinator we have patient care coordinator uh office Clinic office administrator and I I hear that one and I'm thinking oh an administrator meaning a boss no but the the the hourly rate is $15 to $16 an hour which means that it is a receptionist position and not a manager position um and I've got I'm scrolling past ones that are like redundant uh office coordinator same thing sounds like it's something higher level management but it's 18850 an hour um patient intake Advocate uh office coordinator said that already right clinical Clinic administration clinic administrator same thing very entry level okay so you really get a mixed bag I'm sorry a a uh authorization manager is what it says um as well on this one so there are literally a mixed bag there's surgery coordinators and surgery scheduling and scheduling um roles as well that showed up as I was scrolling so and that just came from me doing one local search for office administration so I hope sorry healthare Administration so I hope it makes sense to you that when I talk about healthcare administration I really am meaning a lot of I'm referring to a lot of different potentially different roles what the kind what I would consider from a healthcare administration um role the more broad stroke topic of healthcare administration that is often visited and not from a leadership perspective are those positions that are potentially entry level so what does that mean entry level means that on the ground floor you can enter into this field without a lot of training or schooling and so those of you who are looking to break into Healthcare these are the kinds of roles that could definitely be helpful to you so i' there's a lot of humidity in the air in Charlotte still so I've got my my frizzies um but what I was to say is that the the bottom line is that the healthcare administration as a as a career path to get you from wherever you are now into healthare is a really really great place to start and so today we're going to talk about a couple of different roles that I think are really helpful for you to understand the potential that you could um take the leap right you could take the leap two feet into he healthare um just a couple of months ago and Nicole could share this in the um the chat for us there were a few videos and live streams that Nicole and I had done related to the topic of medical office reception and during those conversations we spoke a lot about transferable skills right ways to land the job and you by way of using the transferable skills that you might have had from other Industries and so things like retail and customer service and um I can't think of any other word right now but basically words that words roles that have skills that will help support you in the area of Health Care especially from this entry level side of healthcare where we are doing things that are that are um patient engaging and patient facing that is going to help um serve our patients and move them through the Healthcare System but not directly providing patient care all right so I hope that makes sense so when we talk about those kinds of roles I mentioned a few of them we just went through that list of potential positions that are out in the industry so when I'm thinking about these roles there there are ways for us to kind of group together the general we'll say the general topic or theme of the entry level as it relates to Patient intake and registration so in a medical practice oftentimes what we find is the term that's utilizes something like a patient scheduling team or patient registar or patient um or excuse me or a front office or office um front office coordinator or front office receptionist or medical office receptionist right so those are the more common terms I said register that's actually something that's used more in the hospital system but the others that I just mentioned so scheduling team or office um medical office receptionist or front office receptionist those are often the terms that we hear referring to folks who are working inside of a medical practice when we look at things from the hospital system they're typically more finite positions so they get kind of um spliced so it's we're looking at uh a medical office receptionist role that has a a a a myriad of of responsibilities that that this individual could be doing in a day and then at a hospital um from a hospital perspective um they are often times having a higher volume than what we have in the medical practice and so you'll see that position that similar position kind of um we'll say um made into something distilled into something smaller so there's a little less complexity there's a little more hyperfocus as far as what the individual is doing so we're going to look at a couple of different um when I talk about they and the life of going to look at the role of a medical office receptionist and then I'll talk a little bit about ways that this particular position is often times um split in a way that can hyperfocus in an area like a hospital system or even a larger volume practice so it doesn't have to necessarily be a hospital system it could also be a higher volume practice that just so happens to serve a lot of patients um in a day or in an hour all right um so if you have questions as questions come up please not hesitate to ask the questions um on this space the goal is that you guys are walking away with so much more confidence and um comfortability really in the topics of the business of healthcare and this area of job selection or making a choice around a particular position it's really really important to me that you leave here feeling great about what you learned so ask questions please don't hesitate if you're watching this on the replay still continue to ask your questions we are often um replying to these comments in the um in the YouTube algorithm as well as other platforms so wherever you're watching from feel free to make the comment or the um post to that particular platform all right so I am gonna screen share um briefly today so I'll turn I'll take it off and on a couple of different times but U but make sure that you um know that you can ask questions throughout I do have my other screen here where I can um see your questions as they come in and so um so let's talk about remember I mentioned the broad top topic of medical office reception typically covers the majority of things that will take place on the front end of our patient visit which means patient has just arrived at either the clinic or the hospital setting or they are planning to arrive and this individual is the one who the first person who greets them and I like to call them the face of the practice they're the ones who welcome the patients right and so it's absolutely some it's absolutely a way that our um patients are interacting with our practices and getting the support that um that they need to make sure that they see the provider that they were meant to see so these individuals medical office receptionists are kind of the liaison the guide to get patient from hoping to speak to be with to to work with a provider in the practice to getting their appointment and actually seeing the provider okay so in a medical office or a medical practice in the US these individuals are the ones who are um the we'll call them the welcome committee for the practice so they're either answering the phones or they're welcoming the patients when they arrive they are affectionately we call them The Gatekeepers right they are the ones who are um the first folk the first individuals that someone would see or interact with at the practice level all right so when we have a medical office receptionist the receptionist job is just that right they are responsible for welcoming our patients and checking them in routing them and making sure that they know where they're supposed to go so as a medical office receptionist the the they are truly the face of the practice because they're the first people that folks will interface with or interact with when they come through the doors okay so as a medical office receptionist it can be somewhat similar this particular function of welcoming and check-in can be similar for a scheduling team or a um patient registar for a hospital system or a much larger group as well so excuse me so sorry when you have our when we have our patients that are um that are coming for the first time they are also the ones who are making sure that patients have what they need they're assisting them with paperwork they're making sure that they have um completed whatever necessary paperwork um has uh that that's necessary for their visit for the for them to go back to see the provider that they have made sure this has been completed they're the ones who are creating our patient's account so that the patient can have claims submitted potentially to an insurance carrier or at least having copies of the visit for proof from their own records right so if I'm just going in for um a job uh required drug test right if I have an employer required drug testing I am still going to interact with this medical office receptionist but it's going to be a different type of interaction because I'm going for a requir test they're still the the face of the practice they're still welcoming me and they're going to route me though they may not be getting all of my information because my practice my excuse me my employer is going to be paying for the visit um so it's a little different but their responsibility is still the same okay so if our patient has well been welcomed by the receptionist whether it's an a a physical um practice like very first visit or it's something that happens virtually the receptionist is still the first one that they're going to interact with right so let's say in a mental health capacity if you have a small practice and there's an individual that's responsible for scheduling their patients and doing some phone intake with their patients that initial discussion is still considered the welcome right it's still a a chance for the practice um the patient to be welcomed to the practice all right take a water so if the patients are coming into the physical practice the patient um may need paperwork completed and if the practice doesn't have an online intake or they hav't submitted paperwork to the patient and ADV the visit the responsibility of the of the French office is to make sure that the patient has um completed the necessary paperwork all of that could take place virtually right so this could happen with the scheduling team doesn't necessarily have to happen with an individual while they're in the practice okay and so it's important to know that it's important to know that depending on the nature of your the design really of your practice you may not be needing to be in house there are a lot of medical office receptionists these days still working remotely and their job is 100% or hybrid where they work from y'all I'm so sorry yawning a bunch today where they um responsibility lies to manage calls primarily so they might be taking phone calls for scheduling or calling patients back to get them scheduled um to if from like a request that was submitted online but no matter what they are still welcoming the patient they are still assisting them to make sure they have the right paperwork getting the right kinds of um information from the patients and so this role for a medical off Lord I am I can't stop yny today the patients have the um information that we need as Medical billers on the back end to manage their accounts and the receptionist role or the scheduling team or the patient intake team member that is calling them um by phone those folks are really vital so your job as a medical office reception is it dayto day is so important okay it's so important for for the health of the practice for you to to be in a place of um confidence and full knowing of what what and why we need to get certain information from our patients all right and so after our patients have um come into the office they're face Toof face the responsibility of our medical office receptionist and even sometimes um a patient advocate or a patient uh Care Service team member PA care service representative there those are all different terms that I've seen used in the industry those folks are the ones who are get routing their patients they're addressing issues with our patients accounts they are addressing um concerns that patients have complaints that patients have right so they are the ones who are kind of fielding all of these challenges that our patients might be having even if the challenge is getting into getting on schedule right if they're walking in and don't have an appointment they're addressing that as well okay so the typical responsibility in this day in the life of a healthcare administration team member working in the area of medical office reception is welcoming their patients is making sure that they have what they need routing their patients and if they phone calls that are coming in and they are the ones doing intake or they're the ones welcoming that patient to speak to another clinical team member they are The Gatekeepers for those phone calls as well all right so when it comes to scheduling and scheduling teams often times a medical office receptionist will have a hybrid responsibility over this role so the the day typically could include them receiving phone calls and routing phone calls throughout the entire day there are some practices that do not require the front office managers or front office team members to manage the patient's calls but there are absolutely moments where um many more moments where practices have the patients coming into the office the receptionist responsible for caring for supporting those patients and also those individuals are responsible for the um managing of the phone calls that come in so that can get a little bit crazy you know it's they I I remember I'm reminded in this moment of this um meme that I saw a long time ago where it's like medical office receptionist and there's they have like Octopus arms like their arms are all over the place they've got a phone here they're like grabbing paperwork from someone they're talking to the provider over here right because that that literally could feel like the job of a receptionist when the practice is open when they are asked to um to do all of those functions so it is very common so if you're someone who gets overwhelmed by the idea of doing a lot of things um you know being kind of stimulated by a lot of different things happening at once than medical office reception may not be your cup of tea right you might want to look at something more um linear something a little less hectic that has very one very specific responsibility like scheduling remotely for a patients or um being the referral or coordinator or the pre-certification coordinator and I'll talk a little bit about that um in just a minute but the person who potentially is responsible for a very specific function and does not have um you know to do things all all in all different directions all day long okay um so one of the the miscellaneous things that happen in these practices is often the there is a receptionist responsibility or a receptionist sometimes responsible for multiple provider schedules and so for example if a provide has um office meetings with the managers or they have meetings with pharmaceutical reps or other representatives from supplier companies right the they are often also responsible for making sure that the providers are updated when they have certain meetings right so like typical reception responsibilities when someone is scheduling meetings for this individual versus scheduling patients right so similar but definitely different because a meeting with a with a pharmaceutical rep might need to take place like around or during during a lunch hour or before the end of the day or something like that whatever the rules are of the practice that might be something that is necessary for um for the receptionist to manage but also it could be that um they don't take calls during the day for those types of things or they don't allow you to schedule for the provider's private schedule and instead they prefer for to you know get phone calls and and um catch up by phone all right so when we talk about um the patient um visits and them arriving so some of the things that uh a receptionist is responsible for is notating the patients accounts and so when I say that I mean if I'm communicating with a patient and they are canceling an appointment for any reason or another they are asking questions about medication well it has been a long day I cannot stop yawning what is up with the patients that have these questions or communication that I believe to be important my responsibility as an office receptionist is also to make notes in my patients accounts right so to make sure my my team members and providers are aware of this patient's concerns or aware of something that's happening with a patient for example let's say a patient is like has to leave on an emergency for family emergency out of country for a few weeks and they were supposed to be going into pre op or something for a for a procedure it would be really important for whoever picked up that phone call to document the patient's account to say Miss Miss um do is going you know to to um out of the country for a few weeks and they're going to reach back out to reschedule their appointment or we're we are tentatively putting it out for two three months right so those are all things that medical office receptionist could be responsible for is making sure everyone's on the same page about what's happening with our patient all right so notating patients accounts is that responsibility collecting and reconciling payments so working with um money and when I say money I don't necessarily mean dollar for dollar I mean um values potentially credit card um credit card processing or receipts or um taking in checks and making sure the money gets put into the patient's account rate insurance checks or checks from our patients themselves so it's important to know that the responsibility of a um medical office receptionist can definitely include these folks being responsible for managing the cash at the front at the front desk as well when I say cash I don't mean like actual dollars not everybody uses dollars anymore but we talk about cash controls as that like money management in the front desk in the front desk area and so they're responsible for making sure whatever came in gets put into those patients accounts and that there are reports to prove that all right and so as a medical officer receptionist I want to make sure that I have a clear picture about my responsibility I want to make sure that I know what the controls are going to be to check back on my work because if I don't have someone checking back on my work there is a chance that I could be um held liable for something that goes missing which we never want to happen Okay um all right so maintaining a clean and organized um environment and calm and recept mean calm reception are and and in the front desk areas all stuff that typically is something that's done responsibility of receptionist sometimes even Beyond just the cleaning and maintaining of the reception area they might require that you clean the check-in window or uh keep the counter for check in and check out clean for the back office right so there are opportunities or chances where like you might have kind of light cleaning duties um organizing duties as a part of your day as well all right so next moving on inter intercommunication with insurances and providers offices so insurance companies are often calling with questions they are calling with confirmation of variety of things so what the medical officer reception job is to do is to discern what exactly is needed and help the medical practice um yeah emphasize what what they are doing and their support um how they would support the uh the insurances or folks that are calling and other provider offices that might be calling so inter office communication insurance is and provider offices happens um for the receptionist as we mentioned earlier they are kind of like The Gatekeepers right so the folks who are interacting with them when they first come into the practice and whether that's by phone or in person they're often the people that are going to welcome them um we here as well put just a little aside um just let me pause this for a second make me full screen so our medical office receptionist often times have the responsibilities of a scheduler team and the responsibilities of an insurance verification team member sometimes even the responsibility of a referral referral coordinator right so there's all these things under one so what does that mean that means that if somebody's calling to schedule an appointment they are the ones responsible for scheduling that appointment that also could mean as the office receptionist that they are the ones who are um making note if our patients can't make it they're the ones who are updating the schedules when things are changing so that we are aware that there are some changes that need to be um communicated to the providers or whomever else is involved in that um also the responsibility of this individual or other individuals kind of on the same level could be something hyp specific like Insurance verifications which means they're the ones who are calling to confirm what a patients insurance coverage is whether they have coverage and what that coverage is is something that we know to be um the function of a lot of medical office receptionists and in Hospital systems or larger practices they are often times the primary responsible party for this function okay so they have like one person who is designated or you know different level of team members who are designated for those roles of you know making that our patients have um their referrals and their authorizations on file and correctly um done all right some of the last couple of things here are going to be very dependent upon the practice equipment sterilization and maintenance totally dependent up on the practice um making sure that you ad adhere to privacy policies and procedures is a compliance thing across the board so privacy policies and procedures are a compliance thing across the board where we we know that there are going to be things that need to be taken care of um and and we want to hold our our patients um compliance like at at the utmost to the utmost level of respect and regard all right and lastly but definitely not least this is again this is kind of a typical day in the life it's not doesn't doesn't include everything but often times when a patient calls um when excuse me patient needs to be called for medical results um oftentimes they the clinical staff will have the front office managers reach out if they don't have clinical staff designated to deliver such results by phone and maybe there's only specific kinds of results that they're allowed to do or um or is it some or it might be something a bit more comprehensive that they are um going to be engaging with the patients on including taking in medical records request that might have come from the medical practice another medical practice or the patient themselves all right so that is our medical office receptionist role so we mentioned medical office reception and having that kind of divided into these subsets of responsibility so a scheduling position um specifically a registration if I'm doing a registration I might just be calling my patients to get the data that I need so their name and demographic and data birth all those things right they might be I might be calling just for that information and when they come into the office the software takes care of everything else if the practice doesn't have that kind of setup when the patient comes in then the individuals softwares for that practice would begin to be leveraged for the first time and we would want to make sure that we are clear about the um the expectations after that so let me see good questions let's say do you think someone who is an introvert would do well as a reception receptionist in an office setting this is such a good question um Nicole answered the question so I'm going to read the question I mean the response that she provided absolutely I know quite a few introverts when I worked in reception and they excelled at their role there are plenty of aspects of the job that don't involve people and they very important jobs that is such great um a great answer Nicole I would agree that there's there's two things that happen when it comes to introverts is it's not always that someone is introverted and doesn't want to talk to people right you say introvert sometimes it's like I I need to know exactly what I'm going to say and to move them along right so like I doesn't mean that I don't want to or cannot interface with my patients all right so it's helpful to to encourage the introvert and you know let them know the person who identifies an introvert to let them know that like you're not necessarily requiring yourself to speak to every patient and um have this like facade on it's like you're following a process and your goal is to capture the data to welcome them right you're going through but it's that type of um system that makes it possible that you would separate from the emotional aspect of it all right let's see hi hi Nicole love that let's see okay um if you want to know how yeah if you know how and when to turn on the charm that's true yes that's real um yes to that that is definitely something that goes into the job it is customer service so yes there's a skill involved in making sure that you turn on the charm as we said I like that all right was that a different one no oh no that is okay so introverts can be I love that okay introverts can be better at separating themselves from the work from experience and depending on the office setup you can split the people work from the paperwork between the desk and yeah that's real yeah that's so true so picking the folks who enjoy interact with interacting with others and letting them excel in hyperfocused area and the people who like to do the uh paperwork they're like excited about the paperwork they get excited about getting things correct totally different function as a matter of fact I would go with like both are so vital that having someone who moves a little slower could actually work to your advantage for a lot of reasons but especially because then you know there's just more time for exposure because they they um yeah yeah I lost my thought but it's fine all right I share one okay so we talked about receptionist we talked about some of these rules that are kind of connected to reception let's go into medical billing and so um one second okay all right medical billing so is medical billing for me now here's the deal is we've talked about the front end we've talked about what happens when a patient is in the office those of you who have asked this question or have the same question that letteri asked about which is introvert medical billing potentially could be a rule that suits you now here's the deal is medical billing a lot of folks get intimidated by medical billing as a career from an entry level but there are so many of us who learned from zero right right we were mentored into the role by someone else so it is absolutely possible a lot of the folks that I talked to even on this space here on YouTube where we brought other folks in interviewed them they started like that wasn't like they all went out and went to school and trained a lot of us did it backwards where we learned billing and then we wanted to certify our knowledge and so we went back and said okay let let me see what else I don't know right so we learned billing on the job and then we went back and gained more knowledge on the back end all right so um I want to encourage you that if you're someone who's been like on the fence and really um nervous about the idea of medical billing as a career path for entry level that there is still a chance that you will um excel in the world billing okay um so let's look at day in the life of a medical biller and so here are the questions that I want to think about so I'm not going to go through all of the the specific things but I want you to think about um what I'll do is ask these questions and see if these are ident if you identify with any these and then I'll kind of Bridge to why because our medical billers have these questions that they you want them to be passionate you want them to be kind of like an A A yes an absolute yes to all of them otherwise they won't enjoy the job of medical building okay um so the first one is attention to detail so our medical billers are researching I'm looking at a lot of data they're looking at a lot of information so when I say data I don't mean just like reports and numbers and letters things like that I mean like no we're going into patients accounts we're looking at information present we might also be looking at reports and trying to compare um those reports I just got like a one bar alert thing hopefully it's not too bad maybe okay giving me confirmation we just went away okay cool um thank you so yeah so the responsibility of our medical biller is to look at the accounts and decide if there's something missing or something not correct or whatever so the medical biller is really having to pay close attention to um inconsistencies and outliers in data right that is really the the function of a biller it's like tell me when something isn't paid and so pay attention so you can tell me when something isn't paid okay so the responsibility of a biller is to really be present with what they're looking at in the day and be paying close attention to that detail and so a day in the life of that when I say that is like someone who really gets it um the idea of just like you know um binocular eyes right or like or magnifying glass eyes I guess um is what I would say all right so next is like do you enjoy investigating so investigating um is what I would say like it's I know okay research is different from investigation right I know a lot of us have talked on this space if you've been here a while about medical coders being the researchers and that's true is that they're the ones who are looking in the books for the answers versus medical billers we're looking outside we might we might be looking at some coding books we might be looking at some resources um that are in Publications but a lot of us are out there researching payer payer um rules we're out there trying to get confirmation from our peers about what the best steps are right so the investigation of ISS issue the deeper why the understanding of the deeper how to resolve right those are all things that we are um responsible for and so there's it's important to know that on a daily basis you will you will be investigating you will be doing research she will be the one who will be out there comparing a contrasting different types uhoh I just went to to Swirly letters am I back am I back now no texting me back is oh man Robo voice my name is Robo Jasmine just kidding [Laughter] back yet it's giving me it was going back up from one bar to two bars one more back yeah all right oh I just realized you put a comment in here so Sor right um oh sorry I me I did this backwards so blue butterfly said yes one of the reasons I went into bilding is because I'm an introvert I love that thank you for sharing that I didn't think I would do as well as a receptionist yeah that's great I appreciate you for sharing that and that gives great advice to folks now it even to con to consider two of the butterfies like there are a lot of roles in the front end of the revenue cycle that aren't medical billing but they definitely could support um the front end right meaning like the the um patients without having the patient interaction um face to face so and I'm throwing my computer is throwing a bunch of things today with this is it weird does it sound okay yeah Mak the face she's making the SC the nose scrunch face um well I'll let this go on the screen for a second well okay okay all right so I see I've always been a people person but I never consider medical buing because math is my Nemesis yeah that's fun that's real there's not so it's not interesting enough is there a lot of math in medical billing it depends on what your function is right there's not necessarily a lot of math where you wouldn't be a able to use calculator so um that's a good thing so we go okay I still get like I have one bar now it was doing great for most of it and then all of a sudden sound crazy do I sound weird no okay all right so um communication skills so you are communicating with a lot of people so there's a lot of um inter office and interfacing out of office communication interfacing with with your peers there's a lot of communication potentially with um your colleagues folks that are supporting you to help you understand what needs to be done with a certain issue right so there's absolutely a ton of communication there's also need to communicate with an insurance company that's like one of the most important like lots of communication with insurances whether it's verbal um meaning like speaking to them over the phone or in writing whether in in the letters or in um online portals right so lots and lots of communication and so if you don't like to communicate know that you will be doing this on a daily basis all throughout the day in medical billing and so it's it's not um we talked about introvert versus extrovert earlier isn't necessarily introverted where you don't have to do anything interacting with people it's just a different type of interacting and also when it comes to interacting with um folks both of them have ways that you know subroles or kind of like this very Niche very hypers specific function both as medical officer receptionist and uh medical billing which are like things that don't really require you to do a ton of interacting for example medical billers do payment posting there could be a payment posting process or Payment Processing that is the hyperfocused function where you aren't doing anything else but posting patient payments right or um insurance payments for p patients all right and when that is the case when you have this responsibility you don't hyper Focus responsibility you may not need to interact with your patients a lot at all a lot at all I can't that's not what I wanted to say very much at all that's the word at all a lot um all right so the next is do you have a love of learning because every day day your your day today will be you learning new things trying to apply that knowledge to what you learned and it could be through the research that you're doing with coding it could some of the investigation and what's going on with our patients accounts right you are absolutely learning um based off of what you know to be true from your past experience and what other folks are doing to resolve issues all right are you a natural multitasker like some variability oh my goodness medical billers are constantly shifting different different throughout the day during different functions right so we don't necessarily have to do all of the revenue cycle in every space meaning like you're not managing from the beginning of our patient visit all the way to when it gets paid to zero in every practice but there are a lot of medical practices where yes you are the one responsible for the entire process and so you need to be able to shift quickly because there's lots of variability various things that are doing that you're doing um from different areas of the practice that are going to help you um determine needed in the moment to to clean up and clar clarify our patients um accounts and what's going on with our patients accounts right like for example I might interface with a coder and I might have to learn something from my coding team to help me discern whether or not the right code was utilized I also might want to talk to my coder about something with like proof of documentation like I need to send a docu element of documentation to Medical um a healthc care company or an insurance company and I need to be able to prove um the the validity or whether the the charges that I've build are correct and so it's really helpful really important to know that I will be um needing to learn new information all the time and will be able to interact with a lot of folks all the time with this new information so I need to be able to um shift and adjust my my day and be open to that how's my connection it's okay all right cool all right so um the the next thing to help you decide whether it's the right function of focus for you is whether or not this um whether or not you actually ask a lot of questions because there are there are a lot of times where in the industry of healthc care administration and specifically this area of medical billing where you responsible for asking questions to the um to our um both our medical providers to our insurance companies just to help get to the bottom of what's going on right so you're questioning things to understand more deeply whether something was chosen correctly right it's part of the investigation right it's like you need to be willing to ask the questions the hard questions sometimes like did they do this right do was the right code used is the right information being provided right and so so it's really really important to um to know that like part of your responsibility day-to-day is to ask the questions to sometimes even challenge right people at the insurance company that's right they didn't pay the code and so you're asking the question of did you process this claim correctly right so be willing to question lots of things you guys are like the the master whole po pokers in things all right I had someone get me a little caffeine I'm feeling there um all right uh do you love finding Solutions we in the health care world for the business of Health Care everything that we do is oriented towards finding a solution finding a way to get our patient visit reimbursed in the most appropriate way right so we are making sure that the right codes are going out and then we are trying to solve the problem of reimbursement or payment for our claims until it's zero right so you are looking for Solutions right the investigating what's going on with the claim and then right away trying to solve what's wrong with the claim right so really Rec recognizing that your job day-to-day is solution oriented it's Solutions focused right you are always trying to get to zero with your claim you're trying to make sure the claim gets resolved hopefully by way of payment and um and you're going to do that by asking a lot of questions by investigating by really trying to always be Solutions oriented all right and last question I want to help you like think about whether or not you've chosen the right career and the part of like the thing that happens in your daily on the daily as a medical biller is whether or not you like to argue your point as a medical biller you are going to be intera interfacing with insurance carriers challenging their processing of the claims and you're basically making a case whether or not it's in writing or you are speaking to them of the phone you are challenging them by arguing your case based on proof that you have in documentation or proof that you have in um your code your coding resources coding guidelines right there are different things that we do as medical billers that um through the day that are doing just that helping us argue our point so our medical billers are really they're focusing on Solutions right we are out there gra gathering information trying to learn a lot literally every single day this is what we do right we are trying to figure out how do we get this claim paid we're investigating we're asking we're communicating with others asking for support from others we're trying to use our skills our attention to detail we're shifting between some things throughout the day because there might be the need for you to also take patient calls and answer patient questions and things like that as well all right so these are all part of the day in the life I hope that you like the way that I positioned that one because I think that asking the questions of whether or not these are skills that you enjoy are is really helpful um that's a helpful way to decide whether or not medical billing could be a career for you and once again it's entry level um is possible even in the area of medical billing all right let's see such great comments here from butterfy billing was separate from everything that was going on in the office quiet and I was able to really focus I really enjoyed it love the math I love math yeah and so that's the thing is there that we talked briefly about math I didn't mention math because of the fact that there depends on the software but it is important for you to be able to notice in consistencies and no attention to detail with numbers so if you're someone who has dyslexia I forget what what it's called um with numbers but like someone who has dyslexia specifically with numbers um you might struggle with medical billing because you're often times looking at numbers to do things like investigate whether reimbursement whether payment or reimbursement happened correctly with claims all right um and yeah it could be quiet you know so quiet that like you might want to listen to music or something to help you stay focus that's what I do I listen to music help me help keep me excited um so yeah multitasking is so so important yes oh I skipped over want to be natural yeah thank you so much for sharing that I'm glad that you find it helpful um so what other questions do you guys have at the moment I um I'm scrolling down yep okay hopefully that connection thing didn't get too weird no I hope not cool all right so day in the life is always a fun thing I know I get I get a ton of questions from folks about the day in the life we have a couple of videos where we talk more detail about what it looks like is also a video if you're really interested in the medical billing as an
