hey everybody my name is paul and i've got some tips tricks and things that you absolutely need to know if you're planning on buying a car from a private party and some of these are going to be good to know in every state and some of these are going to be specific to the state that i live in texas but all of these things are going to be things that you're going to want to watch out for all right you can see right here this says the application for texas title and or registration that's called form 130-u [Music] this one is pretty specific to the state of texas as you can see but a lot of these things are going to be pretty useful no matter what state you live in so go ahead and click on this here this is something that you're going to need to print out and bring with you when you buy the car and honestly it wouldn't be a bad idea to print out two because if you spell anything wrong it's going to be a lot easier just to start a new one so the things that are going to be very very important here are one make sure everything is spelled correctly two do not scratch anything out if you do need to correct something draw a single horizontal line straight through whatever you need to correct write the correction below it wherever she'll next to it uh second of all uh line 20 right here previous owner name city and state that's going to be something that you're going to need the seller to fill out as well as right here signature of seller donor trader printed name same as signature and the date and one more thing make sure that the date is correct and like i said i'd maybe consider printing out two of these just in case something happens it's going to be very important that you have that signature and everything else can be filled out later but it's not a bad idea just to go ahead and fill it out with the seller at the time this is a picture of a title of a car that i just bought well not super recently i went ahead and redacted all the private information of myself and the seller so right here name of purchaser street city state zip code that's the title number odometer check there date signature of seller printed name of seller signature of buyer printed name of buyer you see right here where it says january 29th 2021 yeah so i bought that car january 29th 2022. i just wasn't used to writing 2022 yet scratched out the 2021 wrote 22. so then i had to call a seller arrange a meeting with the seller and i got lucky because most people wouldn't answer someone who bought a car from them months later down the road she was very friendly and i had to get her to sign an affidavit that the tax office gave me when i was trying to register it uh to sign and verify that the corrected date of 22 was correct and i wasn't trying to make changes to the title and the second thing is i registered this car in july i should have registered it within 30 days of this because i got hit with a ton of late fees so that's the other thing that you need to watch out for if you don't register it within 30 days of purchase you will get hit with late fees uh and it a little more than doubled the price that i had to pay to register my car uh make sure the odometer is correct make sure that the name here of the seller and the buyer matches on the form 130 you and one more thing that you're going to want to do just to be safe is have them pull out their driver's license and make sure that they are who they say they are because you don't want to get stuck with something that's mismatched or has been title jumped on because you will have a lot of trouble registering it you don't want to have to go the bonded title route uh and i'll do another video explaining what bonded titles and title jumping are uh but those are things that you're going to want to watch out for so just to sum up avoid all typos if you do happen to need to correct something a horizontal line through it with the correction below it will do uh as long as you initial next to the correction make sure that the signatures match on the title and the form 130 you and that the seller is who they say they are by having them verify with their driver's license all right that's going to do it for things that you absolutely have to have when you're buying a car from a private party again i'd recommend printing out two form 130 use definitely bring a pin that works and will not smear when you fold the title back up and have them verify with their driver's license if they don't want to do that that's sketchy and that's probably a red flag i hope this was useful to you i know it was just a super stressful terrible situation uh and so doing these things will help you avoid all that and it'll make buying a car from a private party a lot easier it really isn't that hard it's
