[Music] thank you and welcome to the show this morning the topic this morning is Student Activities at Tennessee State University and we have with us this morning to talk about Student Activities at Tennessee State University Miss Phyllis qus Brooks who is the public relations director at Tennessee State University and of course with Miss philis SARS Brooks is Miss Fanny H Perry who is the director of the Counseling Center at Tennessee State University and the director of new student orientation uh at Tennessee State University and let me uh Miss Brooks and Miss Perry welcome the two of you to the show this morning thank you Dr H you know uh I think we've talked about Tennessee State University uh on this show on a number of occasions and what we'd like to do this morning is to deal with uh some of the Student Activities at Tennessee State University which is to say to change the focus but before we get into that let's have the two of you uh philis SARS Brooks and uh Fanny Perry to give us some information about your background and your education and some of the things that were important in your careers and leading you to where you are today let's start with you uh M uh Brooks thank you Dr Haney and first let me thank you for inviting us to be on your program comments we always listen and it's a special pleasure to be able to come and comment as one of your guests and congratulations on your years of great public service to the Nashville Community we certainly appreciate all that you do uh as far as my background uh you know when you start talking about yourself you you get kind of tied tongue as to what to say but uh I'm a native of Mississippi I came to Nashville in 1991 to serve as director of public relations and I've uh recently celebrated my fifth year here so I'm very excited about that I attended the University of Southern Mississippi and got my Bachelor of Arts degree in theater and minored in speech and dance and since I've been in Nashville I've received my master's degree in English and will be entering a doctoral program U very shortly I um am very involved in Civic and social activities and and religious activities uh at my church I'm on the board of the EDG Hill Center I'm on the board of managers at the Northwest YMCA and very active at my church uh greater bethl African Methodist Episcopal Church all here in Nashville Nashville is a wonderful town I've been able to watch it grow and really make a great leap in the last 5 years and I've been happy to be a part of that and from uh my background in Mississippi and knowing how government works and seeing this city it's a wonderful City for Tennessee State University to be a part of as the only four-year public institution in this city so I'm happy to bring my background here to my new ground and learn and prosper in that way very good thank you very much and of course Mr Perry let's talk about your background and some of the things that were important in your career and leading you to uh the director of the Counseling Center at Tennessee State University as well as the director for new student orientation at Tennessee State University well thank you Dr Haney let me e what sister BR qu Brooks has said uh you have been on television for quite a while and you have rended deep services to the community but I came to Nashville from Mississippi also in 1966 and I have been at Tennessee State University from that time until present when I entered University as an employee it was Tennessee AI college so I've seen a DRFT change in the University um I'm very very busy with the new students when they come in those students go to my church with me which is capus M moral CME Church we have a capus just celebrated theist black church in Nashville and I was the chairperson of that committee we've had several outstanding programs at our church involving our students and I make sure that I our students get a chance to get that religious Outreach if they so desire I came to Tennessee State as an employee in the office of admission and records and I was there for seven years and I remember my boss telling me you need to go back to school and get into counseling because you cannot stay in the office of admission and records and do all of that assistance to those students who are not qualified I the the happy note of that those students graduated too with honors I went to the counseling summer in 1972 and I've been in the counseling summer since that time this past may I celebrated 30 years at Tennessee State and the president Dr James a Hefner honored those persons who rendered many years of services in the Counseling Center we service an array of students dealing with the entire Community uh freshman SOS juniors seniors faculty staff but this week coming up is where we are focusing the heaviest on Friday August the 16th we open the doors at Tennesse state to our new students at this time we're expecting over a th plus students we have admitted over 3,000 so we have our work cut out for us starting next Friday August the 16th very good you know U I think that uh in talking about uh colleges and universities uh we rarely recognize that uh the students do make up a very very important component of uh the administration faculty and students as uh they generally devise but let's uh look at some of the activities uh Mr qus Brooks from your perspective as the Director of public relations at Tennessee State University what kind of activities do you find uh at this particular point in the uh Academic Year that will draw your office into activities dealing with students for say well there are an array of activities that the students and the community are interested in concerning the University from retirees to faculty as well as new students we have just completed the end of the summer session we had commencement and a celebration of the vintagers the vintagers are those people who graduated 40 and 50 years ago and we honor the 50-year graduates with their golden diploma at commencement so we just did that this weekend and it's wonderful to see those older citizens to come and strut on stage as they get their diplomas but they had a whole weekend of activities as part of commencement and now we take a very short break for some of us and get ready for the fall year and we are expecting a banner year of students as uh Mrs Perry had just mentioned a number of students coming in so the beginning of those activities really a serious business with registration and orientation and registration Can't Stop start until the new students are admitted and oriented and that's a week long of activities because parents come back they bring their students whether they're transfer or firsttime freshman so we have activities for the parents to make them feel good and then we go into registration beginning on the 20th but before if we want to keep this on a an even kill I guess Mrs Perry needs to talk about orientation and how that works and it is a pleasant experience for the students and the parents so they can know that they're leaving their children in very good hands very let's talk about registration and some of the uh problems involved in that SP we might have to uh interrupt you with our first commercial break but nevertheless let's start off talking about that let me start by talking about those students who are already enrolled at Tennessee State we refer to those students that as peer counselors it consists of the student government Association and those upper classman who have applied to be helpl us for the new students coming in we have over 145 peer counselors they will report to the university on Sunday night this night they will report Monday morning they will starting a training training how to assist the new students like someone assisted them when they were new students uh these students go through a rigid training they also get some tips in counseling not only only with the new students but with the parents and extended family the siblings because we're constantly recruiting those persons who in the 10th 9th eth grade as well as those in the 11 and 12th this activity will go on for three days then these peer counselors and student leaders will listen to the president and all of the vice president give them the pledge for the year on Friday morning at 8:00 we will take to the street streets and the doer greeting our new students and their parents this is the hard work that they do our peer counsels will help move the students into the various Dieter good let's interrupt you right here uh Mr per and we'll talk about that uh as soon as we uh take our first commercial break we'll be back with you just
