so you've got a roofing contractor who tells you that he wants you to give him your insurance paperwork your claim document what do you do hi everybody this is tracy bookman owner of homestead roofing welcome to another one of our walk in the park videos where we take just a few minutes to answer your questions about roof repairs roof replacements and the insurance claim process today we're going to answer that question should i give a roofer my insurance claim document so why is this even a question that we get from homeowners why do people want to know whether or not they should give their insurance documents to the roofer it's because commonly roofers will ask the homeowner to give those documents to them well why is it that they're doing that there are a couple of reasons some of them are legitimate some of them and not so legitimate so let's talk about the situations where it's okay to give a roofer your insurance claim document and where it's not so okay to give the claim document to the roofer one situation that i would advise you to not give your claim document to the roofer is the roofers just shown up he's done his inspection gets down off of the roof and maybe you ask him to give you an estimate or something like that or maybe you don't ask but then he says do you have your insurance paperwork and may i get a copy of that that's not a time that i would give the roofing contractor my insurance document the reason for that is he's being really lazy he doesn't want to take the time or the expense to actually write an estimate for you and then have to go through the work of talking to the insurance company inc if there's any discrepancies between his estimate and their estimate all he wants is to tell you that he'll just do the work for whatever the insurance claim amount is now we've done other videos about why that's not a roofing contractor that you would want to hire somebody who just says well we'll just do it for whatever the claim amount is there are reasons that you would not want to use somebody like that so we'll link to those videos in the description below and we'll put little links of them links to them here in this video but for the most part you should just know that somebody that's asking you for that insurance document right off the bat so that he can tell you that well we'll just do it for whatever the insurance claim amount is he's just simply being lazy and probably he's just commission hungry so somebody's asking you for the claim document as soon as he gets off the roof that's a big no now let's say that the roofer has done his inspection he's gone back to his office and created an estimate for you or maybe he's just done that while he's sitting in his truck and now he wants to present you with the estimate so he comes over and maybe you haven't seen the estimate yet and he says well do you have your claim document can i take a look at that so this is one of those that falls into the gray maybe area all right is there any harm in showing him what the claim document is if he's there and he's got an estimate no probably not because there's not a whole lot he's going to be able to do to change his estimate at that point and it actually is a legitimate request to want to see the claim document at that point because that's going to tell him as he's going through his estimate and he's presenting his numbers to you that's going to tell him where he needs to be able to explain uh points of discrepancy so why is his estimate higher than your insurance claim or why are there things in his estimate that aren't in the insurance claim estimate so we've established that it's okay to actually show the roofing contractor your claim document at that point but if you haven't decided whether or not to hire that roofer and he asks you for the insurance claim document should you give it to him that one goes into the no column also so now let's say you've met with a roofer you've decided that you want that roofer to do your job you've signed a contract and you want that roofer to take care of invoicing the insurance company for the project whether the whether the total project cost is more than the claim document or whether it's less than the claim document or even if it matches the claim document however that works out if you want the roofing contractor to handle the invoicing then um if he's asking for the insurance claim document then that's a legitimate request at that time because he needs the information that's on the claim document to be able to file an invoice or send an invoice to the insurance company so that would go in the yes column it's okay to give the roofing contractor your insurance claim document at that point now especially if you're asking the roofing contractor to handle the invoicing for you and his costs are going to be more than what the in what is in the insurance claim document then he's got to do what's called a supplement again we've talked about that in lots of other videos we're not going to talk about that here but if he's got to file supplements asking for an increase in the claim amount then he definitely needs a copy of the insurance claim document so that he can make reference when he sends his invoice in he can make reference to where the discrepancies are and explain to the adjuster what needs to be added and why that's another example of if you're in or if your roofer is asking for your insurance claim document that one goes into the yes column i recently read a google review about a roofer here in my market that that's what the homeowner that was the big complaint that the homeowner had was that as soon as the the salesman arrived at the job he asked to see the insurance claim document that triggered the homeowner's internal alarm bells and rightly so there's no reason that the roofing contractor should be privy to that information at that time he needs to do his work and actually create an estimate that reflects what it is that he's going to be doing to on that particular job to your roof so i hope this information has been helpful for you if you've got any questions about this please give us a call at our office phone number that's right up here 719-433-6991 you can also visit our website that's right down here homesteadroofingcolorado.com we've got a ton of information out there lots of
