Installing SSL Installing SSL 1 Before you start the process of adding SSL functionality to your website you need to ensure that the account you are going to install the SSL certificate on has it's own static IP address. Only one SSL certificate can only be installed on an IP address at one time. You also need to pick which hostname you are going to get the SSL certificate signed for; choosing www.domain.com is different than domain.com or secure.domain.com. When accessing your site via SSL you will always need to use the hostname that you chose when creating the SSL cert in order for it to work correctly. The next step leads us to the generation of the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) that is given to the SSL signing company that will be creating your signed SSL cert. Below is the basic information that is needed to create a CSR within WHM under the Web SSL/TLS section. • • • • • • • • • Email Address the Cert will be sent to Host to make cert for Country (2 letter Abbreviation) State City Company Name Company Division Email Password This is an example of a form filled out. Please note: The domain name you are creating the SSL certificate for is very specific. www.domain.com and domain.com are two different hostnames. Installing SSL 2 WiredTree Once you have filled out the form and clicked the Create button it will generate three blocks of encrypted text. cPanel will also email the certificate files to the email address that you specified in the CSR form. You will then send the CSR block of encrypted text to the SSL signing company so they can create your signed SSL certificate. Installing SSL 3 WiredTree The last and final step of setting up your website with SSL is the actual installation of the SSl certificate on your server. You will want to goto the Web SSL/TLS section of the WHM and click on "Install a SSL Certificate and Setup the Domain" link. You first will want to type in the domain name you got the SSL certificate for in the Domain field of the form. This should auto fill in the User and IP fields. Installing SSL 4 WiredTree Once it auto fills in the correct username and domain name you will want to paste in the signed SSL cert that your SSL company sent you in the top box. One thing to note is if you are using the basic Windows Notepad editor to open your SSL cert file it might add in an extra special character on every line of the cert. This looks like ^M and if pasted into the SSL box it will cause the install to fail. We recommend using Notepad++ (http://notepadplus.sourceforge.net) For the second box on the form there should already be a private key and for the last box you will most likely need to get the ca-bundle file from your SSL company. Most will include this in the email that they send your cert but if they don't please contact them for obtaining their ca-bundle if required. After you have input the correct information in all of the boxes click the Submit button at the top to install the SSL cert and setup the domain. Once this has completed it will output a message stating whether or not the SSL cert was installed. If it returns that the install was a success you can then goto https://www.yourdomain.com and it should show a locked symbol in your browser. If returns an error make sure you are putting in the correct signed SSL cert file in the previous form.
