(photo by jonathan sand/afp/getty images) in an article published in "global ecology and society,” a new research publication by the university about global warming, researchers at Warwick's school of environmental sciences and the university of reading, England, write that the entire population of the 50-mile long “tropics of greenland" (which includes parts of Canada and russia) is concentrated in just 12 square miles, making it a fairly small "diverse society." the researchers concluded that by 2050 the entire population of the “tropics of greenland" will be about half what it would be if the entire population was spread over the entire earth's land mass. The study is not the first to suggest that earth's polar regions are shrinking. The arctic is losing about 400 square miles of ice per year, at an average rate of about feet per day, the arctic scientist ben cook has noted via Twitter. The researchers behind the warwick study believe that some of this melting will ultimately contribute to melting of the tropics of greenland.
