In general, we work with smaller organizations who offer practical and innovative solutions to these important problems. We are most interested in supporting organizations with effective plans to reduce animal suffering through targeted spay/neuter programs that address companion animal overpopulation. These projects will be given special consideration, particularly for larger grants. The foundation also provides grants for adoption and/or education programs relating to companion animals. However, these grants are rare and typically small relative to our spay/neuter grants. Eligibility To be considered, all prospective grant recipients must be tax-exempt organizations as defined by Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Eligible organizations must be located in California, Oregon, or Washington (or seeking funds for programs in those states) and must have been in operation for at least one year. Eligible organizations must have had total expenses of less than $1 million during the most recent fiscal year. The foundation does not provide grants or scholarships to individuals or make grants to influence legislation or support candidates for political office. Application Process The application process is intended to minimize the amount of paperwork required from prospective grantees, particularly in the early stages. To this end, the REQUIRED first step is to contact the foundation with a brief summary of the project you would like to propose and the name and phone number of the project manager. The Handsel Foundation responds to all direct inquiries and we will help you determine whether or not your project is a fit with our scope and interests. Initial inquiries that fit with the foundation’s interests will be invited to complete this application (see the next page for required application contents) and email it to the foundation at inquiries@handselfdn.org or mail it to P.O. Box 6476, Olympia, WA 98507. Email is preferred. We will confirm receipt of your application within two weeks. We may require additional information before making a final decision. Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis; we will review your application and notify you of our decision within one month following the end of the quarter.
