This didn’t happen to a friend of mine :PThis happened to me !There was this Data Analytics Startup company (Now Stop Guessing, Its not MUSIGMA, I wasn’t even shortlisted in the first round of MUSIGMA)..The Job Post said, “We are looking for minds who can innovate. No prerequisites. Any candidate from any department who has a CGPA above 8 can enroll.’’First Round: I had a CGPA of 8.3. So I appeared for the screening test. Screening test primarily consisted of questions that test your personality.From the whole university only 14 people were selected. I was one among the 14.Second Round: We had this Group Discussion on the topic, How science can be incorporated into movies to make stunts more realistic, at least theoretically ?Oratory and Writing was never a problem for me since childhood. So got through the round 2.5 were shortlisted from 14 for the final round.Final Round: I went into the Interview Room. There were 2 interviewers in the panel.Interview kick started with normal basic HR interview type questions, I was painting the smile on the face of the interviewers with every answer of mine. (The skill which I developed over consecutive fall outs in the first round of 8 companies that visited my college previously.)Interviewers: So Ganesh, Your Resume says you are from ECE, How comfortable are you, with coding ?Me: I am pretty much comfortable sir, though am no coding geek. In the past 6 semesters, I have had good amount of exposure to coding. I learnt C, CPP BASICS (Appending Basics to every skill set of yours, was always a safe option ) in my first year. After getting into department, I got familiarized with MATLAB and SCILAB. I took Virtual Instrumentation Elective so I have a good amount of knowledge in Labview too.Interviewer: I can see it from your mini projects, that you have a good knowledge in software tools relating to your domain (ECE). But we are a Data Analytics Company, so tell us if you have any previous experience with any of the Data Analytics tool ?Me: No sir. I don’t have any. Maybe I could relate a bit to the Scopus journal which am currently working under my Mentor. Since it is a journal paper I cannot let you the details completely. So I’ll just let you know the concept of the base journal. We collect the data from MIMO systems, process it and predict the perfect Transceiver design. And MATLAB serves the purpose.Interviewer: Do you have any luck with R language or Hadoop ?(Luck! I smelled his Sarcasm)Me: No Sir, I did my 11th and 12th through State-Board. When I joined college, I used to envy at people who did 11th & 12th through CBSE, find coding so comfortable. Those guys who could write Double Linked List code with such ease scared me. Then slowly I learnt, I started to get the hang of it. And here I am, ending up in the Top 5. So I feel I can learn the languages required for our company too in due course of time.Interviewer: I can understand your desperation to get placed. But, hereafter when you are applying for a company, first sit and check whether your profile matches with the company’s profile. Thanks !(Desperation to get Placed ! It was the most toxic place of business I’ve ever worked. I wanted to get the hell out of accounting.I’d taken the job because I needed a job. They’d hired me, pregnant, in December of 2008 - at the beginning of the recession. Everyone around me was falling off a cliff but that job made me safe.Safe but miserable.The problem was somewhere in the culture of the place. It was the only time in my adult life I’ve ever been bullied. I’m a friendly person; I put my head down and work hard. I crack jokes. It made no sense.Half of the department picked on the other half. HR did nothing. At one point, one of my coworkers reported me to HR for making a doctor’s appointment on company time. I was livid.I applied to every position within the company for which I was remotely qualified. I was constantly passed over for younger, less experienced candidates. An opportunity came up for promotion in my department and my arch-nemesis was chosen over me.I was told I wasn’t aggressive enough.Yep, not aggressive enough for internal audit in accounting.Since I had seniority and an excellent record, I got a consolation promotion. As a supervisor, the only change to my job was added work. I didn’t supervise shit.Then my company was acquired. My manager quit without notice and suddenly I was the manager. I signed something saying I’d stay until the integration was complete, but I knew we were all going to lose our jobs. The new company didn’t need another accounting department.At least there was a severance package.They did need to keep someone who knew what the hell was going on. The week before the integration was complete, I interviewed with the SVP of accounting.So did that nasty woman who’d beaten me out for the better job.I spent the last few days packing boxes of files to ship to the new office. On the Thursday before we closed the office for good, I sent an email to the SVP and HR asking if Friday was my last day.They responded with a bunch of electronic documents for me to sign. It was all for my stay bonus.Out of a department of thirteen people, I was the only person they kept. The SVP found the other candidate arrogant, obnoxious, and out of her depth.I got a better title and the new company had a culture of nice.I worked there for two more years. They threw me a party when I left and the next time I needed a job, they offered me my pick.I’ve been back for three years. I’ve been promoted three times.The work gets intense at times, but the people are nice…no politics. It’s not my ideal career, but it’s not a bad gig for now.

Common Scams in India:Scene 1: Aadhar mobile number update:Went to a private Aadhar e-seva kendra, filled form and was ready to submit. Assumed it’s going to be nominal charges for same. Lady said 300rs. I said bye bye.Went to e-seva kendra. This time all done. Lady asked for 50rs. I said I know its 25rs.She said “Sir we have to pay rent as well.”I said “As you are asking very less compared to others I will pay 50rs.”Felt bad about it later. Complained to UIDAI via twitter. Got reply that they will register an official complain and take necessary action.In addition to this its very common that these e-seva center charge anything between 100–300rs for new Aadhar registration(should be completely free) or update(nominal charge of 25rs). Saw it happening in one instance, raised my voice but no one supported. Seems everyone else was just wanted to get their work done and I was creating a nuisance.Scene 2: Mobile number portability:Went to Idea store. With commanding voice, I said “I am here for MNP”, as I was giving them a new customer. Got reply from lady “minimum recharge of 475rs will be needed for MNP”. I said “MNP charge is 19rs, what recharge I do after that is my choice”. But this lead to nothing. Left the store.Visited a local idea retailer. Inquired about MNP and he said 178rs minimum recharge. Didn’t want to argue again. Paid the money and left for home. Felt bad again, later complained to idea_cellular and TRAI via twitter. Still to receive a response.Even for mobile and Aadhar linking some retailers charge money, its supposed to be completely free.Scene 3: Flash Back - Last monthHad a bad mood and my train was about to leave. Thought some water could help. Went to stall and asked for two water bottles. Vendor asked for 40rs(20rs per bottle, MRP was 15rs). I became furious and scolded him left and right. Got my money back (10rs). Complained to local DRM via twitter. Got response that action will be taken and immediate fine of 500rs is charged to vendor.You see what I am trying to say, here in our country(not only our country) people always find a way to dig out money or more money by this means or another, many are aware of it but many just ignore it. I know I can’t be idealistic all the time but it disturbs me seeing people’s common lust for money around me.Call it a scam or whatever, but it’s part of our life, it’s more of a mindset and reflection of our ideologies.We might accept it, ignore it or fight against it.Sometimes it seems like endless cycle, because “We the people” always find innovative ways to scam each other.Take Care.PS. Also asked to make sure his team members follow that. I said I or any of my friends will be visiting store anytime and will complain again if same incident happens. Hope this is some kind of win.Got update regarding e-seva kendra complaint as well. “Fine is imposed and warning is issued.” Couldn't check personally but this is official reply.****

This happened in PUNE.It was a good day with blue cloudless sky and warming temperature, I woke up early since I was in first shift so started earlier to office.signNowed office, had some work that I owned and went with colleagues for breakfast, when came back noticed HR and manger were discussing something in meeting room, I continued my work, until interrupted by manger to come along with him, so I did.In Meeting RoomM: How are you Mr. XXX?me: I am well and good , feeling quite good today.M: hmm, so Mr. XXX, how many years you have been working for XYZ and how was your experience so far ?me : (what the hell he is asking me this, wondering why he is asking this question to me) completed 2.5 years so far (I joined as fresher there ) and told regular rotten things like feels good , good work culture,bla bla bla.M: okay, let me come to the point - there is feedback for you from team mates that you are not doing well and keeps sleeping at nights when you are in night shift , your attitude towards work is not good. (M was very well aware about my background )HR : (in somewhat harsher and loud voice) : Please get out.me : I literally grabbed HR and manager feet to show me some mercyHR : XXX, please leave ASAP.meanwhile, M calls security to escort me to the gate , few mins passed, a security personnel comes in and requests me to come along with him.me : while standing and giving merciful look to both - still hoping they will revert their decision and came out of meeting room and headed towards washroomI asked security personnel to wait outside washroom and let me wash me eyes that were much REDDER and shred me tears.I came out of washroom and asked security personnel to wait at main door and requested not to come by desk very politely, he agreed, went to my cubicle , did not show any sign for what happened, took my stuff as if I am searching for something from my drawer ,just so as not to take doubt among team mates , took my stuff and gave a smile back to team mates who were not having any idea that I am leaving PERMANENTLYI walked very SLOWLY with security guy and came out of building.signNowed room (there was no one at room- room mate was at job, we were just two guys )- I CRIED AND CRIED AND CRIED FOR HOURS - and for the first time in life I experienced GREAT VOIDI was constantly thinking of my family (I was unmarried then ) and their dreams, their hopes - all gone just like that !!(I always used to send 90% my salary to home for support and brother’s education so I was not having any big bucks in banks )On the same day - I got some many calls from my colleagues - news was spread finally , did not answered single one.They all came to meet me and I told what M told me about them and they said no one has given any feedback.I did not broke news to my home - I broke it when I went to home after 1.5 months.I broke it to my room mate after 2 days.Meanwhile - I decided to change my spends towards my lifestyle since I was only having 3k in my salary account and I have to live with that for at least 2.5 months since I could not ask for money at home.I used to eat just a SINGLE WADA PAO for a day and cup of tea - you heard it - just a single wada pao for a day and a cup of tea and I have to prepare for interviews as well with this empty stomach -Whenever I got interview call - I spent money for transport and skipped eating Wada Pao and shamelessly used to ask at interview locations if they are proving free meals for candidatesI lost almost 15–20 kgs in 1.5 monthsThis continued for 8 months and finally I got a decent job !!(I faced so many cross questions like why did you leave your job in middle while holding no offer - since it was mentioned by HR on releasing certificate that I am, XXX, wants to move on )P.S.Later I come to know that HR had hired someone from college pass out from M referral who was relative of M.There were no issues among team mates - my team was really decent team - just t0 be clear.My Room mate helped me a LOT during this periodForgive my poor English and grammatical errorsI moved on and LIFE HAS TAUGHT ME A GOOD LESSON THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET.

This happened when I was working in Gurgaon, India in one of the so called ‘biggest companies of their field’. Since this issue is related to a big brand, I would rather go anonymous so that the fuss does not build up.This company was a great workplace, constantly growing and hiring people. And then came a time when we had no place for new comers to sit, and hence the company needed a new (or a bigger) workplace to sit. Considering that the company had various separate departments, many of which were independent of each other, it was a logical decision to build and additional work place in the same compound which had ample free space.But then, the upper management lobbied for a completely ‘new and big’ building where whole of the new company would sit together at the same place. But this seemed illogical. Needless to say, the decision was accepted unanimously to build a ‘bigger and new’ work place.The construction started, and from the very first day, the construction contractor looked as he was clueless of the work. Even the most ‘noob’ person could make out that the material used were sub standard and and process used was more of a short-cut based.And then came the Diwali festival. For those who do not know, this is the biggest festival in North India. It was never a norm in the company to get gifts from the suppliers or contractors, at any level or for any person.But this norm was broken this year. Every single person, who was associated with planning, execution, acquisitions, purchases or by any single way with this ‘New building’ project got big boxes of gifts from the contractor. And that too, openly.! Shamelessly, they accepted it too. Of course there were gossips and jokes, but no one minded a bit.The project had exceeded the initial budgeting by around 40% and to compensate for the ‘losses’, the company would deduct the salary of the employees. YES, SALARY CUT.!The employees protested, nothing came out. They took the bitter pill, and accepted it.FAST FORWARD 8 months from the festival:The building was completed finally, and the day for moving in came. Before that day, none of us ‘low level guys’ had any access to the premises. And the first thing we observed when we went there was the sub standard furniture, the poor quality of doors and windows, and the ‘barely clinging to life’ air conditioning. The month of July in North India and imagining it without a proper A/C is like imagining being tortured in a prison.Needless to say, the construction had been delayed by around 4 months, but that was quite normal if you consider the normal timeframes in India for such projects. But the damage was done.!But then, bad things dont last for long. Withing weeks of moving in, the furniture started breaking. Within a month, the main door wouldn’t open without a hard effort and then within 3 months, the building had serious cracks in it. YES, CRACKS in a 6 month old building..!! And then, an earthquake just made things worse, which left the cracks so wide that you could put your ‘Pinky Finger’ in some of them.And then came the September rains. First heavy rain, and the whole floor was flooded. Where did the water come from? EVERYWHERE. the AC ducts were dripping, the light were raining and we were ankle deep on the whole floor. And yes, this floor was not on ground but the second floor.!Everything was a mess, but no remorse or shame on the faces of the project team at all. The contractor was called multiple times, every time he would send his men, do the puncture-repair stuff and that’s it…!!I left that company after about a year after the rain episode. But to this day, my former colleagues discuss this. Nothing came out of any inquiries, and the company since then has gone literally down. So many people have left that now they can actually fit in the old premises, which otherwise has been left vacant and unused.For me, this has been the biggest scandal that I have ever seen in a workplace. Anyone who read might have realized how much the contractor and project team would have made out of it. What surprises me the most is that it happened in a private company, and not even the stake holders paid any serious attention to it..

Yep recently too. Doing a quick contract for a farming services outfit, turns out their equipment, ie the truck i was piloting, had a tendency of losing all safety systems such as breaks etc.every now and again, apparently everybody knew this, but was only told the brakes are questionable when fully loaded, the rationale being, “Son, you're only doing 20-40mph, and mostly on secluded private land, you will be fine”. And the lead driver was to bark instructions and information non-stop on the private CB channel when we were in transit.Well, the lead driver had communication issues, didn't like using the CB in case he said something wrong, and he'd get caught, so he was quiet as a mouse, and when a huge truck came hurdling towards him, and he had to pull over and almost stop, he forgot to communicate this information to me, about a mile back, but unable to see anything due to trees and terrain.When I got within 2–300ft of the lead vehicle, I realised he was not moving, I also noticed this huge truck hurdling toward us. I applied the brakes, which decided not to respond, then the J-brake to no avail, forced it down three gears and applied the J-brake, again to no avail.By now I was technically under the lead vehicle, the front of 'my' truck was under the equipment carried on top of the lead vehicle, and sticking out the rear end. I was still traveling at around 35–40mph. The truck coming towards us, was now well and truly on my side. I know there is a delay between observation and reaction, so I decided to throw the vehicle into the oncoming traffic lane, as soon as a gap would show. I did this, I don't know how I didn't die, but I did it. The manoeuvre put a dent in the CB antenna as I passed under the equipment carried by the lead vehicle.I passed the lead vehicle, it turns out he was moving at about 10mph, so not stationery, which was a good thing. The outcome would have been signNowly different if it's been stationery, at least my life would have been in real danger, and not to mention the million Dollar highly specialized lead vehicle.Now, my silent partner managed to laugh at me as I passed him, asking whether I needed a change of underwear, I responded that a different lead driver would have been the way to go.We proceeded to the next customer, I unloaded and without a word, left my lead driver and vehicle behind and headed to base. Here I met the owner, told him what I thought of the lead driver and his ego, his idea of team work, and safety, handed over the keys and drove home.A lot of things happened in my life around this time, all very traumatizing, but when I think about that incident, I can still hear that truck passing me, and the noise is makes when you tryow a 45ft long truck and trailer, only missing oncoming traffic with less than 3ft! My heart rate still goes beyond 140 just thinking of it. Just imagine if there had been a car behind that truck.. I would never have seen it.
