video as we begin we're gonna see this black car pull up and park and I think he's just parking kinda out of the blue this is maybe where he's getting out or whatever what we're gonna see here is it slows down to normal speed is this woman kind of come over see this guy on a motorcycle and start piling the stuff out of her bag and you go why would she do that well when the guy gets off his bike you can see he has a firearm and his threatening her with it so she gives him her phone and as he puts the gun away we're gonna see the guy in the black car get out hi how are you he is an officer who looks like he just got off duty looks like he is wearing part of his uniform there dude's gonna give it up and now the officer is going to get him down on the floor and put him in some restraints and it's kind of funny the woman and her dog the woman who got mugged here is gonna come back up and go oh okay maybe I can get back this piece of clothing that I lost but isn't interested in her phone apparently at that point let's go back and see it one more time as she sees the guy he's obviously waving a gun around at her and puts the gun a you know in his other hand it's in his right hand grabs her phone that's the valuable thing that most people carry around now he's gonna walk off she accepts that but our valiant officer steps in and takes him at gunpoint rather than shoots him which is an interesting choice we'll talk about it in a little bit now he has to get him into custody so he gets a guy on the ground puts a knee in his back starts putting his hands behind his back and restraining him and now I was gonna hold him there obviously is gonna have to put him in cuffs thankfully no one was hurt and this one the bad guy gets his comeuppance and that's where this one ends boy I bet you she was really grateful that that guy was there if you appreciate the lessons you get here every day at active self-protection learn the lessons that I'm about to give you and then at about the danger of transitional spaces I want to think about the value of compliance if that's your best option and I really want to focus on using your firearm as a compliance tool and as a defensive tool so let's think like we do many times here on active self-protection about transitional spaces this guy comes parks here and waits now I don't generally recommend you wait in your car ok fine but notice here that this woman is walking down the road and I want to say when you are in your car when you're in a transitional space that cars stop that you should pay attention to your world one of the things that I notice in this video is that as the woman is getting mugged it takes a guy in his car quite a few seconds in order to respond and I don't think it would have taken him that long to respond had he been paying attention to his world things might have turned out even a little bit better he wouldn't been able to get back on his bike and all that so I can't tell you enough when your car is stopped don't just pay attention to your cell phone pay attention to your world make sure that you are paying attention because attention buys you time and time buys you options now this woman is you know decided to comply and if you don't have the attitude the skills the plan if you're not a tool user yourself probably compliance is your best bet here notice that this guy has a gun in his hand you can see it right here the arrow shows it in his right hand and you can see the fact that he is armed and has certainly threatened her with that gun called out to her pointed the gun at her most likelihood and so she's decided to comply folks compliance is an acceptable strategy in some cases if you choose to comply that's perfectly acceptable in my opinion if it's the best strategy in the moment in order to protect your life and your health that's a complicated calculus to do but if you do comply recognize you put your safety in the hands of an aggressor now she gets the heck out of the danger zone he gets back on the bike and notice now that our bat our bad guy is getting out of there and her good guy has decided to intervene can't tell you enough I want you to think beforehand about third party encounters and whether you're willing to intervene at this point she's lost her phone but whatever and if you had chosen not to intervene that's an acceptable choice as well you get to decide for yourself and your loved ones which third party encounters you're willing to intervene for and which ones you're not I don't think there's a right answer here but your own moral code and and the laws of your state your municipality whatever will determine that now he gets out and we noticed here that the bad guy actually has hands up so our good guys pointing the gun at him and our bad guy goes hands up you can see him put those hands out and so out what happens here is our good guy actually takes him at gunpoint rather than shoots him bad guy had put the gun back in his waistband to get back on his bike and utilize his throttle and so our good guy knowing that he is still an imminent deadly threat cuz he's been putting a gun around takes him at gunpoint there is a time to point a gun at someone and not shoot it in order to take them at gunpoint and give commands at gunpoint and that's true whether you're law enforcement or a private citizen so if the guy had gone for his gun or whatever absolutely use it in that moment however because he didn't so probably the best bet here is instead to take him now of course as a non officer we probably wouldn't take somebody into custody like this if you're not a sworn law enforcement officer you're probably not going to put somebody on the ground like this I would recommend if you do need to take somebody into custody then what you do is is that you learn some techniques in class to get them on the ground without having to put your hands on them because that puts your gun at risk notice that his gun is way out in front of him here and he could have some problems with that don't recommend that you do that instead maintain distance with your distance tool get him on the ground get his hands way away from him and then you can disarm him when he's on the ground and it's a much safer place for you now then notice the lady is coming back at that point you've got to get this guy disarmed before that happens if you are this woman I would strongly recommend you get out of the danger zone until you're in a place where at least use the cover and concealment until you're in a safe place now once you've taken this guy at gunpoint now you got to get that gun on it if you have to stay in the vicinity of a deadly attacker you must get their tool away from them I haven't seen that in this particular instance and so this is still a dangerous place all things considered I'm grateful that this off-duty officer was there I'm grateful but this bad guy got taken into custody I'm grateful that this woman clearly got her phone back and that's a good thing let's learn about transitional spaces learn about paying attention in them learn about the nuances of taking somebody at gunpoint rather than shooting them because of much less consequences that come of maintaining ourselves and knowing how to take someone at gunpoint and get them prone down on the ground and about recovering
