Freelance graphic designer invoice for Purchasing
are you a freelance graphic designer really struggling with knowing what the hell to charge your clients i was two at one point and i'm gonna explain my process of how i went from charging 40 pounds to around 500 pounds for a brand package my name is abby and i've been a graphic designer for five years and i went full-time of my business around four months ago so when i first started charging clients i literally had no clue what i was doing or what i was charging but i'm really at the point now where i'm so confident with my prices and hopefully i can help you get there too so when i first started charging clients i literally had no clue what i was doing or what i was charging but i'm really at the point now where i'm so confident with my prices and hopefully i can help you get there too in this video i'm going to be sharing my insight into how to price yourself as a graphic designer and where the hell to start i want to make you aware as well that there is no right and no wrong answers in what you should be charging but it is more about valuing yourself i want to see your self-worth i want to see you valuing yourself so highly if you have no self-worth i'm leaving i'm going this video is done i'm only joking anyway let's get straight into it so number one the top of the list it is do not charge hourly and charge a project rate you want to be charging a flat rate so the top question i get is how to set your prices now for me this is just my preference but i charge a project rate a flat rate and not hourly so charging hourly just doesn't work at all because you may be a really experienced graphic designer therefore knowing how to do things quickly so just charging hourly makes no sense so what the hell is a project rate so it is an overall cost of the project so once i know exactly everything that i have to design for this brand i'm going to be putting a cost together to give my client taking into consideration my value my time and the actual style of the brand so each brand can be really different so they can vary from each other so it's really wise and it's really good to know roughly how long it's going to take you to make this brand for example a more typography based logo is going to take a lot less time and then a more illustrative logo therefore i would be charging more for the illustrative style so my next point is it is down to a confidence thing so when i first started my business i literally had no clue what to charge and i was charging around 40 pound for a logo because at that time that is what i felt confident with i was not confident in my design ability and i definitely was not confident in myself so i knew i had to try and build up a portfolio of clients that i didn't have to get to where i am now so at this stage in my design career i was confident with charging that 40 pounds for a logo which is absolutely fine if you are just starting out and i actually found as i started getting more clients and designing more my confidence just grew and grew i then got to a stage where i actually started resenting myself a little bit for charging so little so then this is where i felt like i could up my prices because my confidence has grown my design ability had grown so then i upped my prices and started charging more so the most common question i get asked every single day is what should i be charging and the answer that i give back is there is no right or no wrong answer so it is just purely down to a confidence thing and whatever you feel comfortable charging then go with that price you will just find over time that as you design more as you get more confident you will want to up your prices to reflect this you will also get to a stage where you will look at your prices and just failed that what you're charging just isn't enough and that you aren't valuing yourself so you will up your prices until you feel like the price that you're putting out is a value to yourself and to your client so my next tip is do not showcase your prices yes you heard me i know a lot of designers are very wary about doing this and they're not sure what is the best thing to do but do not show your prices i actually used to showcase all of my prices on my instagram my socials and my website but i saw no real benefit of this therefore i do not showcase my prices anywhere because i really do feel like it puts people off say for example if someone has a budget in mind and they go and look at your pricing and your pricing is either way too high for them or way too low and if you're too low that is potential clients that you are losing i honestly would say that i get more interest now from not showing my prices because people are really intrigued in what i charge and they want to find out more i really do believe that if someone wants you to be their brand designer then they do not care about what your prices are they will want to know what you can offer them before you tell them your prices and this goes for you as well you want people to value you before they know what your prices are i just think if someone really wants you to be their brand designer and only you then they will not care a single bit what your prices are obviously if it is completely out their budget then that won't work but if they value you as a designer then they will be okay with your prices because they know the value that they're gonna get another good thing about not showcasing your prices is that you can actually change them when you kind of want to so if you learn a new skill brush up on existing skills then you can up your prices if you feel like your value has gone up and you're going to be offering more value to your clients if you're at a stage where you're confident with your design ability but you want to increase your prices and justify it then here are some ways to do so communication so communication you can change the way that you speak to your potential clients so for me i used to talk to all of my clients through direct messenger on social media i now use an inquiry form which i made through google forms and it has changed the game for me so this is a form where potential clients can contact me and tell me exactly what they want for their branding so by switching it up i feel like this is such a more professional approach so i will now talk to all of my potential clients through email rather than doing it through direct messenger so next is brand proposals so when i first started out i would send my client over a few images of their logo and that was it thinking about it now it is absolutely ludicrous that i would do that because how can someone see a brand by just sending over a few pictures of the logos no so now i put together around a 10 to 12 page brand proposal with their whole brand from logos fonts mock-ups explanations of why i've done certain things and so on i have found this approach to be so so successful and especially successful with my clients because they're the ones that can see their whole brand in action and once they see their whole brand comes alive it's so much easier for them to go with that sort of brand i know there's going to be a lot of people watching thinking that what you're charging now you're still not sure on because you're still not getting enough clients as you like to but trust me when i say i have honestly found that when i put my prices up i have got more interest it's like people trust you more because your prices are higher so for example if you were to go to someone and they charge say 20 to 40 pound for a logo and you went to someone that charged around 400 pounds for a brand package you're probably gonna have more trust in the person that is charging a lot more than the person that is charging 20 to 40 pounds i think it's also about reassurance so when you pay for something that is a lot more money you know you're gonna get a good outcome but you have to make sure that if you're pricing yourself around the 400 to 1k mark that your work shows this because you cannot be charging something if your design ability just isn't there so make sure that your value of work reflects your pricing so that is it for my tips for pricing and i really hope this has been valuable for you but if you do have any questions please make sure you pop them in the comments and i will go through and answer them myself just remember the main point of this is pricing yourself is all about self-worth and what you value yourself if you don't value yourself then how do you expect clients to value you too and if you like this video make sure to give it a thumbs up and if you want to see more things like this then subscribe to my channel
