For the first time ever, the FDA approved an over-the-counter birth control pill that can be available to Americans without a prescription. Opill is a progestin-only birth control pill, which is different from other popular forms of birth control pills that are combination of progestin and estrogen. The company behind Opill, HRA Pharma, said that they are planning on having this available to Americans in 2024. They haven't released a price on how much Opill will cost, and it's still unclear whether insurance companies and other forms of coverage will cover this. There are Americans who aren't able to get a prescription for birth control pills because maybe they don't have easy access to people who can prescribe it. So now those people, they have better access to a pharmacy to be able to get an over-the-counter birth control pill that is not only safe, but also more effective than other sort of over-the-counter options like spermicide or condoms.
