I was here before the magazine even existed. In 1979, after a few years as a copyboy at the village voice, I moved out west. I felt like i was on a roll. I was living in Oakland, and i was making a lot of money as a reporter and writer. Not long after I left the village, i was working with a guy named Robert mccrum as a copyboy at meader (later sterling publishing). We wrote for all the major dailies and magazines. And McCrum was giving me some very funny, clever, clever advice about a magazine that was taking off and making a lot of money, the village voice. "one very important thing to remember," he said, “has a very small capital letter and a big capital letter at the beginning: proof. It's the only proof the v. Will ever need. The same one who had taken me to see his father, an American soldier in the pacific during world war ii, and told me stories about the war. Mccrum went on to work at the village voice. He was a great editor. He was kind and generous. But he had this crazy, crazy idea about a new type of paper that he had started at meader. It was a weekly magazine, just like the New Yorker, but with a small-caps typeface instead of the big ones, called, appropriately, specs and pics, which were designed and produced by the guys in the village voice.
