If a property is owned by more than one landowner, one signature will be accepted for purposes of this petition. To RENAME a road with an existing name, petition must have 100% signatures of all landowners whose property abuts, transects, or has access from the road to be renamed. I understand that naming the road may change my address depending on how my home or business is situated in relation to this road. I also understand that I will be notified by mail of the road name/address change when it becomes effective and must use the new address when notified of the change. A property owner is a “petitioner” if their property has access off of the road to be named/renamed, or is crossed by or adjacent to the road to be named/renamed. The following procedure is to be followed to petition a road naming/renaming: 1) The petitioners must designate a primary contact person for the petition process. The primary contact person’s role is to communicate approvable proposed road names to the petitioners and act as a point of contact for the process. 2) The primary contact person must determine acceptable road names by reviewing the Flathead County Road Naming Conventions (http://flathead.mt.gov/gis/documents/ Conventions.pdf) and the List of Unavailable Road Names (http://flathead.mt.gov/ gis/documents/UnavailableRoads_000.pdf). If there is any question as to whether a proposed road name is approvable, the primary contact person should contact GIS prior to suggesting a name to the petitioners. 3) The primary contact person should discuss proposed road name(s) with the other petitioners. At this point, petitioners should select a proposed road name and submit it to GIS using the Combined Petition for Road Name Assignment form. This form can be completed singly or in counterparts. 4) Upon obtaining a majority petition: a. A Notice of Hearing will be mailed to each petitioner informing them of the set date for the County Commission Public Meeting when the road naming/ renaming will be considered. b. A Notice of Hearing will be published in the County Public Newspaper as a public hearing and item for discussion on the County Commission agenda. c. At the public hearing, comments from the public will be taken. i. The petition name will be recommended by GIS for adoption. If opposition exists, the County Commissioners will hear the opposition and make a decision. Pending no opposition, the change will be approved. d. Upon approval, a Resolution of Road Name Change/Assignment will be passed and delivered to the Clerk and Recorder. An effective date of change will be listed in said Resolution. 5) Notification of the new road name and new address (if applicable) will be sent to each petitioner. The County will install a road name sign(s) per County standards.
