Although the blood-pressure effects of caffeine are not as evident among heavy consumers as those who consume caffeine infrequently, the blood-pressure effects of caffeine do appear to have a greater physiological impact than the effects of caffeine consumed in the context of moderate consumption. The findings concerning the effects of caffeine consumption on the cardiovascular system were obtained from a study of healthy middle-aged men (n=25 per group) consuming either caffeine only (n=20) or caffeine only with a meal (n=22). The caffeine-only group had significantly diminished systolic and diastolic blood pressure and greater resting vitalization compared to the caffeine-meal group for both systolic and diastolic blood pressures. A slight fall in heart rate variability and no changes in heart rate variability were found in the caffeine meal-only group compared to both the caffeine-only and caffeine-meal groups. Compared to the caffeine-meal group, the caffeine-only group had higher blood-pressure responses to the diastolic component of mean pressure changes in both systolic and diastolic blood pressures after 2 min of exercise in the seated position.
