THE SCHOOL OF CONTINUING STUDIES GRADUATE PROGRAM
Welcome to Northwestern and the world of financial aid. This information sheet has been designed to inform you about
your rights and responsibilities as a recipient of financial assistance and is applicable to students who have received their
“Important: 2009-10 Northwestern Financial Aid Award Notice” email. You will receive this email once your 2009-10
financial aid award is processed by our office. Please read the following information carefully. If you have any questions
after reading our materials, please contact a financial aid advisor in our office
Your receipt of financial assistance is based upon our review of the financial aid application materials you have provided
to our office. Financial aid is offered on the basis of demonstrated need. You will be required to apply for financial aid
each year using the appropriate federal and institutional aid applications. You will be considered for financial aid in
subsequent years if you are making satisfactory academic progress towards your certificate or degree. Information about
satisfactory academic progress requirements is available from The School of Continuing Studies Graduate Program.
Your financial aid award for the 2009-10 academic year is outlined on your “Accept/Decline Financial Aid Package” web
page in CAESAR. Financial aid (including Federal Title IV aid) is divided evenly over periods of enrollment unless
otherwise stated on your “View My Financial Aid” web page in CAESAR. Once you have completed and submitted the
appropriate loan applications electronically with your lender, they will be processed for final approval and disbursement.
Funds for the Federal Title IV programs (Stafford loans, Grad PLUS loans, etc.), either in part or in total, have been
appropriated by the United States Congress and are administered by the University.
The financial aid Cost of Attendance for the 2009-10 year is listed on the “Financial Aid Eligibility” web page in
CAESAR. Your Cost of Attendance is comprised of the actual tuition for your projected enrollment plus averages for
books, room and board, personal expenses, transportation, and loan fees. Your Cost of Attendance will not be increased
to cover expenditures beyond the estimated expenses listed.
Your financial aid award is related to information reported on the financial aid application materials. Since the award is a
direct reflection of your (and your family’s) financial circumstances, the terms of the award are to be a confidential matter
between you and Northwestern University. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), all students
have certain rights with regard to their educational records. A copy of the University’s student records policy is available
on the Web at www.northwestern.edu/registrar/ferpa.
Disclosure of appropriate consumer information always has been a priority at Northwestern and much is provided in
annual publications. Below are some references that may be helpful.

YOUR FINANCIAL AID AWARD
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
The School of Continuing Studies Graduate Program - Checklist
Read all the materials in the “Financial Aid Award Information” section of our web site.
Log onto CAESAR at http://www.northwestern.edu/caesar/ using your NU email account Netid and
password. You must accept, decline, or reduce your financial aid award electronically. You may
do this by navigating to For Students>Financial Services>Accept/Decline Financial Aid and then
click aid year 2010 in the select aid year to view page. Follow the instructions on the “Financial Aid
Award Package” page to complete and submit your 2009-10 financial aid award notice to our office
electronically. This should be done every time you receive a Financial Aid Award Notice email from our
office unless noted otherwise.
Determine which (if any) additional loan materials you need to complete. You may do this in
CAESAR by navigating to For Students>Financial Services>To Do Item History>Select Aid Year
2009-10. Please follow the instructions in the “Description” column next to each To Do Item(s). It is
very important you complete any outstanding item(s) on this list as soon as possible.
First time Stafford and Grad PLUS Loan borrowers: The on-line Award Notice on the
“Accept/Decline Financial Aid Award Package” page in CAESAR is your loan application for
Federal Stafford and Grad PLUS Loans. You must submit the on-line Award Notice to our office
electronically. About two weeks after you submit your award notice to our office, you will receive
an email from your Stafford and/or Grad PLUS Loan lender regarding the steps needed to
complete and e-sign your Federal Stafford and/or Grad PLUS loan Master Promissory Note (MPN)
on your lenders’ web site. You must also complete loan applications for any other loans listed on
your on-line award notice. You can determine which (if any) additional loan applications you need
to complete by checking your 2009-10 “To Do Item History” in CAESAR as explained above.
Continuing Stafford and Grad PLUS Loan borrowers: The on-line Award Notice on the
“Accept/Decline Financial Aid Award Package” page in CAESAR is your loan application for
Federal Stafford and Grad PLUS Loans. You must submit the online Award Notice to our office
electronically but you do not need to complete a Federal Stafford and/or Grad PLUS Loan Master
Promissory Note because you submitted one in a prior year. However, if you wish to receive any
other loan(s) that may be listed on your on-line Award Notice, you must complete the on-line loan
application(s) promptly. You can determine which (if any) additional loan applications you need to
complete by checking your 2009-10 “To Do Item History” in CAESAR as explained above.
LOAN APPLICATION DEADLINES
You need to submit your completed on-line loan applications no later than two weeks after you receive
your “Important: 2009-10 Financial Aid Award Notice” email, or by the following dates, whichever is
sooner. If we do not receive your completed on-line loan application by the deadline, the loan funds may
no longer be available to you.
Fall quarter 2009:
November 6, 2009
Winter quarter 2010: February 5, 2010
Spring quarter 2010:
May 1, 2010
Summer quarter 2010: July 10, 2010
If you are borrowing student loans for the first time, complete a federally required entrance
interview so that your funds may be disbursed to you. See page 4 of this form for information regarding
entrance interviews.
CHANGE IN CIRCUMSTANCES
You must notify us immediately if your circumstances change.
Failure to notify us of any changes may jeopardize your eligibility for assistance in the current and/or
subsequent academic period(s). Notification of any change should be submitted in writing or by email. The Committee on Financial Aid to Students will review the change in circumstances and
notify you of any adjustment in your financial aid eligibility. Do not hesitate to contact a financial
aid advisor if you have any questions regarding this issue.
•
•
CHANGES IN CIRCUMSTANCE CAN INCLUDE:
change in courseload
•
receipt of a scholarship or monetary gift
change in registration status
•
change in expected earnings
•
change in employer contribution
Your financial aid award may be adjusted if you change your enrollment plans
and/or take time off during the academic year. The financial aid programs for which you are
eligible and the amount of aid that you can receive from each program depend on your enrollment status. Contact
a financial aid advisor for more details.
DISBURSEMENT OF FINANCIAL AID
Note that no financial aid funds can be disbursed to you before the first day of class.
Therefore, you should have some personal cash available at the start of each school year
for the purchase of books and other items that must be paid before classes begin.
Deferment of Prior Educational Loans
You may be eligible to defer payment on prior educational loans while you are enrolled at least half-time as
a student. Contact your lender to determine if you qualify for a Student Loan Deferment.
Deferment of Federal Stafford Loans, Grad PLUS and Alternative Loans: In most cases, the University
Registrar sends your enrollment information to the National Student Clearinghouse electronically. The
Clearinghouse will then notify your lenders that you are in school. You also have the option to request a
deferment form from your lender. If you choose this option, you need to complete the “Student Section” of the
form and bring it to your program’s registrar. Your registrar will complete the form and send it to the
Clearinghouse.
Deferment of Federal Perkins Loan: Contact your former school to obtain a Student Deferment form (your
former school is your lender for the Federal Perkins Loan). Complete the “Student Section” of each deferment
form as directed and bring or send each deferment form to your current school’s registrar office. Your registrar
will complete the form and send it to your former school.
PAYMENT OF TUITION BILLS AND LATE FEES
The Office of Student Accounts is responsible for maintaining your financial account with the University.
They send eBill account statements via email around the 10th day of each month. These eBill
statements reflect all transactions (i.e., charges and credits) to your account since the previous monthly
statement. If your statement shows a balance due, you are responsible for paying the bill by the stated
due date. A late fee may be assessed if your bill is not paid on time.
Questions about your eBill statement and late fees should be directed to the Office of Student
Accounts.
Matriculated students may review their student account online using Caesar
(http://www.northwestern.edu/caesar/) and also have the option to make electronic payments to their
student account using Northwestern University ePay. More information about eBill and ePay can be
found at http://www.northwestern.edu/sfs/payments/methods.html.

Paying your
bill
If your tuition bill has a balance due that will not be covered by financial aid:
All students may pay by mail using a check or money order. If mailed, the
payment must be received by the due date. Be sure to mail your payment
at least five days in advance of the due date to avoid a late fee.
All students may pay in person with cash, check, or money order at the
Bursar’s Office on either the Chicago or Evanston campus.
Matriculated students have the option to make electronic payments on the
web using Northwestern University ePay.
Anticipated Loan
Credits
Anticipated loan credits typically appear on the first tuition bill for each term
reflecting federal loan funds you are expected to receive for that term. The
purpose of anticipated loan credits is to allow you to easily determine how much
you owe to the University beyond your financial aid. Anticipated loan credits are
removed from your account automatically when the actual loan funds are received
at the Office of Student Accounts. They also will be removed if you fail to apply
for your loan(s) (i.e., submit completed loan applications) in a timely manner.
Contact our office if you have any questions about anticipated loan credits.
