Diane’s previous experience includes 5 years as the Head Circulation and Reader Services Librarian at Lincoln University. While at Lincoln, she provided reference service, taught library instruction, and developed a freshman library orientation program. Diane lives in West Grove, PA, with her husband, Joe, and daughter, Valerie, a senior in high school. Her other daughter, Desirée, attends Temple University in Philadelphia. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to meet Diane, please stop in the library and say hello. The staff at the LRC was sure that Clint would work out when he caught his first bird in the library. Apparently that part of the job description wasn’t spelled out to him until after he accepted the position. Clint’s hometown is near Landisburg, PA and he graduated from West Perry High. When he goes home on week-ends he likes to go hunting and fishing. He’s also a big sports fan so if you happen to see him in the library shelving books, you can ask him how the Redskins are doing. Janette is also a carpentry student, however she’s been working at the library for the past two years. In fact, Janette has actually finished her technical classes in carpentry and is back on campus only for the fall semester to finish her academics. When not working on her math homework, Janette loves to baby-sit her grandson, Shaun, aka “Lil Round Eye.” Stevens Tech is a family affair for the Smiths; Janette’s husband, Chris, graduated from the HVAC shop. The Smiths live in Lancaster along with their six feline friends. Tutorial Available for Catalog Suzanne Waddell, a librarian on staff at the LRC, has created a tutorial for our patrons who would like to improve their skills at searching the catalog. Some of the topics that the self-paced tutorial covers are keyword searching, how results are displayed, saving results, and course reserves. As you go through the tutorial, you’ll find that quizzes are included (4 in all). The quizzes are an opportunity to see if you understand the main points in each section. To access the tutorial (which is on the INTRAnet and therefore only accessible on campus), go to http://stevens/lrc and click on Library 101. The tutorial is also available through Blackboard. This is the first screen that displays when a patron starts the tutorial. Page 2 @ the LRC New Books for Respiratory Care Program When the college announced the start-up of a Respiratory Therapy program for the fall 2003 semester, administration also made plans for the LRC to order 90 new Respiratory Therapy titles. Over the summer the books began arriving at the library and the LRC staff are now in the midst of processing these new materials and getting them on the shelves. Below are some highlights of these newest additions to our collection. Anatomy and Physiology Atlas of Human Anatomy An atlas that is filled with color photos (almost 500), radiographs (X-rays), and line drawings complemented by background text that is “concise but comprehensive”. Case Studies Critical Diagnostic Thinking in Respiratory Care: A case-based approach is a respiratory care resource that’s organized by symptoms and is filled with true-to-life case studies Physiology Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials is a slim volume that relies heavily on its many diagrams to explain the intricacies of respiratory physiology. Blood Gases All You Really Need to Know to Interpret Arterial Blood Gases What’s especially great are the self-assessment questions that force you to learn the material. Pediatric Respiratory Care Comprehensive Perinatal & Pediatric Respiratory Care discusses the causes and care of respiratory illnesses in the pediatric population; each chapter has objectives, key terms, and a posttest. Medical Terminology Quick and Easy Medical Terminology An audiotape for pronunciation and a CD for even more practice accompany this workbook which teaches students medical terminology quickly and easily. Exam Review There are a number of exam review books available—all loaded with practice questions and accompanied by CD’s that recreate actual test—taking conditions. Lung Sounds A very interesting resource, Lung Sounds has a CD with the book that lets students listen to actual breath sounds of patients who have various lung conditions. Look for an article describing the new periodicals for the Respiratory Program in the next “@ the LRC.” Basket of Apples Proves Puzzling We congratulate you, the students who have worked diligently to put together the jigsaw puzzles at the circulation desk. Maybe you were just a little too diligent. The first puzzle if you remember was a very pretty water scene with dolphins but was put together before school even started. Begun in 1990 by a reference librarian in California, LII has gained a reputation for providing librarians and the general public with a reliable and efficient guide to Internet resources. The home page looks like a directory and lists several different categories such as “Health and Medicine”, “Government and Law”, “Sports, Recreation, and Entertainment”, and “People”. Organizing information in this way can be helpful to searchers who are beginning their research and want to browse a category. But searchers can also enter their search terms right into the search box and search the site like any search engine such as Google. LII also sends subscribers a listing of new sites added in a weekly email. Non subscribers can look at these via a link on the home page along with “News and Features” such as search tools and “Current Themes” (for example War and Peace: Resources on Iraq).
