You must go to a South Dakota Exam Station and submit an application, a
certified birth certificate and social security information. If you are under
the age of 18, you must have parental or guardian consent.
You must submit your out-of-state license or identification card. If you
have never held a South Dakota or out-of-state driver’s license, you must
provide your Social Security number and establish your identity by
presenting a certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or tribal
identification card approved by the Department of Public Safety and one
other primary or secondary document. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you
will be required to present a Naturalization and Immigration record

You must submit proof of your name, age and address.
You must take a vision screening exam and any other required driver’s
license tests.
You must pay a license fee of $8.00.
You must maintain one of the following forms of financial responsibility:
o Owner’s policy of liability insurance.
o The bond of a surety company.
o Certificate of Deposit or securities in the amount of $50,000
deposited with the State Treasurer.
o Certificate of Self-Insurance (minimum 26 vehicles).
You must carry written evidence of your financial responsibility in your
vehicle to present to any Law Enforcement Officer upon request in the
form of one of the following:
o An insurance policy or identification card identifying the name of the
company, policy number, effective date of coverage and the date of
expiration.
o A Certificate of Deposit issued by the State Treasurer.
o A Certificate of Self-Insurance.
VEHICLE TITLE AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS -
As a new resident, you must register and title your motor vehicle within 90 days
of you moving to South Dakota from another state.
In order to title and register your vehicle in South Dakota, you must meet the
following requirements:
You must complete an Application for Motor Vehicle Title and
Registration and attach your out-of-state title. You must have your
application signed by the record owner(s) or by an authorized agent for
the record owner(s). If the application is signed by an authorized agent,
you must attach a power of attorney document to verify the appointment.
If you purchased the vehicle out-of-state, you must attach a bill of sale,
purchase order or sales contract. If the dealer price certification on the
application for title (MV-608) is not complete and you purchased the
vehicle from a South Dakota dealer, you must attach a purchase order. If
your vehicle qualifies, you must complete a damage disclosure form and
attach it to your completed application.
You must pay all applicable vehicle titling and registration fees, as well
as excise tax (if applicable) to your county treasurer’s office. If you have
already paid tax on the vehicle to another state, and that tax is equal to
