Winter 08:
Learning —
Been there . . . Done that?
Come back for more!
From the desk of Ken Colen,
President, On Top of the World Communities:
Not long ago education was something that took place early in
one’s life. We went to school to prepare for our careers. Things
have changed. Learning is celebrated as a life long process.
No one is left behind in this exciting process of growth and
development.
Our education program boldly begins its third year of providing
the best in life long learning. This is our second year at the
Master the Possibilities Education Center — a place dedicated to
life enhancement through learning . . . together. In this, our first
quarter of 2008, we have continued to update classes, develop
new opportunities and bring you outstanding faculty. We want
to make this catalog your intellectual “wish list.” Thousands have
already experienced the joy of learning with us . . . we want you
to come back for more.
This season will be our most ambitious to date. With about 150
classes, presentations, lecturers and courses, we are confident
what you want is available right here at Master the Possibilities.
Some are encores of popular programs, others are sequels . . .
most are brand new. We lack only one ingredient — you!
As you peruse the catalog, make sure to visit the “Faculty Facts”
section. Our program is most fortunate to have a faculty that is
second to none. A combination of education, experience and
teaching is the hallmark of these remarkable individuals.
Theme weeks have become a popular way to focus on a topic
through many perspectives. In January we have our “Florida
Week” followed by “Medical/Wellness” week in February. We
are also very positive about our “series” format. We have never
cancelled any series! Please note the SE Asia & China offerings.
These will include a special class/lecture by Prof. Vin Boudreau,
Chair of the Political Science Department at CCNY and Director
of the Colin Powell Institute. We will bring in visiting faculty
whenever possible. Professor Patrick Keane will return for Irish
Studies.
It is our sole purpose to provide you with the best in life long
learning. This is our challenge and privilege.
See you in class!

Central Florida is a treasure trove of unique and interesting birds. However, the
lush year-round foliage which attracts them also serves as a major deterrent in
spotting them. Being able to sort out and identify simple bird songs and calls
gives you an invaluable “tool” to enhance everyday birding opportunities. A
simple “chink” or “pic” note can tell you what to look for and where to look.
This presentation affords you the opportunity to preview an in-depth study of
bird songs and sounds. A one hour presentation, this class will introduce the
tools helpful to all who are interested in learning to identify birds by the species
specific sounds they make. It might be a grunt, a twitter or a cheep to you, but it
means a lot more to our feathered friends. You will enjoy this fascinating hobby
even more when you know who “they” are what “they” are saying! Those who
have registered for the seven-session class Birding By Ear: Birding 401 to begin
January 29, 2008 and have ordered a copy of “Birding By Ear” tapes or CD’s will
be able to pick them up at this introductory session.

Most of us just take our family names for granted, yet practically all English, Irish,
Scottish, Welsh, German-Jewish and Scandinavian family names originated as
an occupation, geographic location and family relationship (mostly parentage).
These names were required by law and the needs of the tax authorities beginning
in the 12th or 13th century. Most people who had a choice chose names that
answered the questions what does he/she do? Whose son/daughter is he/she?
Where is he/she from? What does he/she look like? When our forefathers chose
these surnames (family names) there was no idea of their being long-lasting
or for ever. It is hard to underrate the importance of our family name. It was
Shakespeare’s character Othello who said . . . “ he that filches from me my good
name robs me of that which enriches him not but makes me poor indeed” and
the German philosopher Goethe who likened our family name...”not to a cloak
loosely hanging about one but a tailor fitted suit that cannot be stretched without
injury to the wearer.”

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Meets 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26, 3/4 & 3/11. “What bird is making that
sound? I can hear it but I can’t see it.” Have you ever made that statement? If so,
you could benefit greatly from an advanced birding class. When you complete
this course you should be able to recognize the songs of most of the birds
common to central Florida. Once you recognize the song of a particular bird you
will know what you are looking for and where to look, adding greatly to your
enjoyment on bird walks, while playing golf, sitting by the pool, working in the
yard or just being outdoors. Participants will need to purchase a copy of “Birding
by Ear: Eastern/Central” which is available in either three cassettes or compact
discs and can be obtained through the instructor at wholesale cost. The tapes/
cd’s introduce 85 of the most common species in the eastern United States. This
course should be beneficial to “rookies” as well as experienced birders who want
to improve their identification skills. It will be light and entertaining but very
educational. Course includes six classroom sessions and one field trip to test your
newly learned skills.

forward to our retirement from full-time work, anticipating more opportunities
for play. And most of us be became involved in some type of financial planning
for retirement. But how many of us planned for the psychological and emotional
ups and downs of such a drastic change? Who are we, now that we have retired?
How do we judge our success in retirement, and what can we reasonably expect
to accomplish in our remaining years? How have our roles and relationships with
our spouse, extended family and friends changed? What can we predict for the
future? Have out strengths and resources changed? Are we ready for the inevitable
health problems to come? Dr. Jim Chandler, retired police psychologist, will lead

such as Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison had been reshaped and is still

Ft. Sumter through the Battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg. He will tell us about
the war and its major combatants. Jerry will ask us to suspend our knowledge
of the outcome and journey with him, looking forward from 1861 where the
outcome was uncertain, rather than looking backward in time and thinking that
the outcome was inevitable. In fact, as Jerry will explain, the outcome was often
in doubt and Northern victory was never assured.

In a world of infinite possibilities, the science of Astrobiology emerges, offering
options for extra-terrestrial life beyond our solar system. This challenges the
current moral attitudes of scientific thought and offers a vast panorama of choices
suggesting new forms of life. These life forms challenge current thought and the
understanding/acceptance of them could be the basis of new rules governing
life as we know it. The laws of probability support these contentions...but would
religion accept such thought? And what about all the recent UFO sightings?

Assisting Democracy:
Post 911 Foreign Policy
Instructor(s): Dr. Vincent Boudreau
Classroom: Circle Square
Cultural Center
Friday, February 29, 2008
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Democracy assistance has assumed a more and more important role in America’s
foreign relations over the past 20 years. In part, this reflects the politics that
followed the cold war, and in part, it reflects the spread of new ideas about
how democratic states act, and why it would be better (for the US and other
democratic countries) if democracy spread. In important ways, however, 9/11
raised questions about democracy assistance and its role in America’s foreign
relations. This talk examines how democracy promotion interacts with security
concerns in recent US foreign policy. How do more urgent questions about US
security affect democracy assistance policy, and how to alterations in that policy
impact global politics? The talk draws on a series of meetings sponsored by the
Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies at the City College of New York. In particular,
the discussion will talk about the trade offs between democratic processes and
democratic outcomes: what should happen if a democratic election brings a
despot to power? Is it fair to bend the rules of democratic participation in order to
insure that someone committed to democratic ideals comes to power? Have these
considerations shaped the evolution of American foreign policy? Should they?

Ireland in the
20th Century:
The Interchange of
History and Literature
Instructor(s): Dr. Pat Keane
Classroom: 1
Monday, March 17, 2008
AND Wednesday, March 19, 2008
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
In these sessions focused on twentieth-century Ireland, we will explore the
interaction of art and politics. The “Irish Troubles” include the Easter Rising
(1916); the War of Independence (1919-21); the controversial Anglo-Irish Treaty,
signed in December 1921 at the conclusion of the conflict; and the tragic Irish
Civil War (1922-23). We’ll also glance at the resurgence of the Troubles four
decades later in the North.
The initial Troubles will be explored in connection with selected political poems
of the century’s preeminent poet, W. B. Yeats: “Easter 1916,” “The Second
Coming” and his two poetic sequences, “Nineteen Hundreds and Nineteen” and
“Meditations in Time of Civil War.” The Northern Troubles will be illuminated
by reading poems by two of the major poets of the Northern Irish Renaissance:
Seamus Heaney, Yeats’s successor as Nobel Laureate, and Derek Mahon, author
of “A disused Shed in Co. Wexford,” considered by many the greatest single
poem to have come out of Ireland since the death of Yeats.
We will also view two films: THE TREATY, a 1991 docudrama co-produced by
British and Irish television which focuses especially on the role played by the
charismatic Michael Collins, and THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY (2007),
a powerful feature film that pits brother against brother during the transition
between the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War.

Knitting is a great way to express yourself creatively and maybe even relieve stress.
But, you need to know the basics. In these four sessions, you will learn to knit,
purl, cast on stitches, bind off stitches, increase and decrease. These techniques
will allow you to made a dish cloth in class and perhaps start a simple scarf or
cozy slippers. It will also give you the foundation for more involved projects. The
class is limited to 6 students and is strictly for beginners or those who want to
refresh basic knitting skills. Students should bring one set of needles — either
size 6, 7, or 8 (the short 10 in. needles are preferred) and a skein of Lily-Sugar’n
Cream cotton yarn for the dish cloth project. These items are available at
Wal-Mart, JoAnn Fabric, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc.

Figurative Sculpture
Instructor(s): Diane Podkomoski
Classroom: Studio B
Wednesdays, March 5, 12, 19 & 26 2008
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
In this class you will learn how to combine raw materials and an idea into a figure
— an art form — which represents some aspect of being human. You’ll better
understand the process of fabric manipulation — going from flat fabric to full
figure. We’ll sculpt a head then go on to make a dimensional and proportionate
female body to support it. When finished, you’ll have created a full character.
Simple machine sewing skills and a portable machine are required for this class.
A complete material list will be available prior to the first class. (NOTE: This class
is different from the figurative sculpture offered in Fall 07).
