My second son was about 15 month old when one day something weird happened. It was morning, I had the day off and we were back home from running some errands. He was playing quietly while I was on the computer, when all of the sudden he stopped playing, lay down on the ground and looked like he was sleeping, but with his eyes opened. By the time I realized something was off, he had resumed his game as if nothing had happened. Over the next hour he did it again a couple of times. He became unresponsive, his gaze not focusing on anything and as white as chalk. I sensed that something was awfully wrong, even though he looked “normal” most of the time and my husband and I decided to rush to the ER (which was a short 10 minute drive).When we arrived at registration, my baby was acting normal again and the nurse, seeing me freaking out told me to calm down, that my baby was probably just sleepy and that I needed to keep it cool (when all I wanted to do was to shout at her that I knew my baby and this was not him being tired). We had to fight to be allowed to stay and wait for a doctor to examine him. Not seeing any urgency and since it was lunch break, we were sent to a waiting room and told that we would need to wait for the intern to finish their meal. So we waited, my baby seemed normal, playing, walking around the room. He had a couple of “episodes”, but would resume life right after them as if nothing had happened. When the intern arrived, she saw a baby full of life who presented no specific sign of anything. She examined him thoroughly, didn’t find anything and was about to send us home with the instructions to come back again if something was wrong. At that point he hadn’t had an episode over the last 30 minutes or so. So I was ready to trust the doctor and rule it as something weird that would never occur again and for which we would never know the cause. We were about to leave when it occured again. In front of the doctor. And the smile on her face left. She grabbed my baby, examined him again, and told us we need to run a ultrasound of his belly asap. We were immediately sent to the ultrasound were her diagnostic was confirmed : he had an intussusception : part of his intestine had folded over itself. This could lead to the necrosis of this part of the intestine, as blood flow was cut, and, if not treated, could be fatal. The reason why my baby was acting so strangely was because he was in pain at each bowel mouvement. His pain was so great that he didn’t cry or react, he would just down quietly and wait for it to go.Fortunately he was diagnosed in the early stage, the folding had just occured and the intestine was still healthy. They gave him something to numb him out and were able to put the intestine back in place with an enema (the water pushed the intestine which unfolded back in place). We stayed at the hospital overnight and we able to go back home the next day.Few people know that when in great pain babies can just “shut down” without even crying. Intussusception can go unnoticed for a few days before the baby starts having blood in his/her stools. But as a mum, I knew righ then that something wrong, really wrong with my baby.PS: This story took place in France where ER and hospitals are probably not run the same as in other countries and where lunch breaks really are a thing, unless you’re considered a real emergency :)

Grab some snacks as it could take a while.I was the happiest person the day I was selected as a FTE (tech analyst position) at GS - a reputed fin-tech company which mostly hires tier-1 students, a dream for many. I heard from many people that GS offers package as high as 32lpa which was quite a big deal for me - or for anyone who might have been at my place.Then came the HR’s call. She offered me semester long internship in GS! I was glad that I don’t have to spend my last semester in college and will also earn some money. With the stipend as high as 75k and stay at Hilton hotel during intern, anybody is likely to go crazy and say “YES”.And so I did.The beginning (GS-Bengaluru office)Soon came 7th January. Day started off with amazing orientation and office visit. Then came the lunch buddy - GS assigns a buddy from your department to have lunch with you the day you join, let’s say he was Raghav (name changed).Raghav seemed to be a really smart guy. I asked him a few questions about GS being a fin-tech, is it easy to switch and other questions. He seemed to be out of place, not interested. Instead of giving proper review comments, he changed my code by himself. Some backend stuff also came to me.I fetched the code from repo, the one Varun had implemented. And tried to understand.“You just have to implement feature-b-xyz, no need to go through whole code” he said.Fine.I added a new feature. Compiled and checked. Everything was working fine. Committed the code.Next day I came. Compiled the code.‘EXCEPTION THROWN’‘FAILED’And my PC hangs. For no reason why.I checked the code - it was changed. The integration part was changed. Feature XYZ was changed. And it stopped working.~Varun committed the code an hour ago~Why did he commit a code that fails? I wondered.This started happening daily. I had no idea why was this happening.The next series of days started with me coming late - 11:50, 12 or later than that. I used to mail Rudra about the update. Sometimes I was able to attend standup, sometime I wasn’t able to. My health started deteriorating.Everyday, Varun used to commit some changes. She had refused her farewell too I guess. She came to me and we had a decent chat. I asked her the reason of leaving. She wanted to switch the team maybe but it was taking a long time. Sweet and smart is all I could say for her. She had done work with JPMC & Morgan Stanley (US) and held a green card. A dedicated worker.After the lunch, she had a long meeting with Rudra. She was too firm with her decision.After she left, someone told me she bitched about many people in the team - specially Rudra. I was really sad. GS lost a good employee that day. And maybe, due to politics.Next day, GS was having an orientation for all new campus hires. It was one hell of a day. World-class hotel stay and world-class orientation.Varun was going out to the new office for 2 weeks. For some work.4th monthBefore Varun had left for the new office, he had asked me to attend telephonic standups for our team from 3–3:30. He said he spent the whole night trying to fix those but didn’t know how to.I came to his desk. Those were linting errors!After having 10 years of experience, and you don’t even know what they are! Also, he never left a single moment he could get to brag about himself.“You will be working under Varun. He will be the team lead. Your work is XYZ-AHSH-PPOS…..”“Be as mature as me. I can make complex things simple easily. Learn it from me.” he said.Varun. No!!The silent guy. Who took away all the presentations. Even during our team standups over calls, he used to answer when some guy asked me about the project. My code was changed everyday. All the torture I faced last month. And now- I’ll be working under him. Wow.I told Rudra - how my code was changed everyday, how I was not told about the changes Varun did in the backend and still expected my code would run successfully. He listened to me for a while and then said -“When I was a NAPA, I used to ensure that I get 0 review comments”“I don’t get review comments, Rudra. My code gets changed, and it’s hard to understand it everyday without help of Varun.”“It’s a good thing, right? You will learn something from what the change he does. It’s good for you.”Cool. I have to look at the new code and somehow “learn without doing”. Interesting.I worked till 9 pm that day. Before Rudra left, he smiled at me sarcastically.“Shilpi, still working?”“Yeah Rudra, I came little late today.”“Varun changing your code and you changing his code.!”“Yes. I was made to be feel like a garbage - just because I was late at the office!I cried for an hour. They were told to pick up weapons as they were found.The city of Leningrad became surrounded early in the war. Supplies came in over a large lake that the Germans had not taken complete control over. In the 900 days of the siege, over 1,100,000 Russians died in the city, mostly of starvation. In December of the first year, 59,000 people died, January 130,000, February 130,000. Total deaths by the end of the first year were 780,000. Of the 30,000 doctors and 100,000 nurses in Leningrad, only half would survive the war. 1.5 million people were evacuated during the siege. Many died in transit. The population of the city was 2.2 million at the beginning of the war only 630,000 were left at wars end.

I got the letter three weeks later.All "Twin Peaks" locations in the greater Dallas area for making hand motions simulating oral intercourse in front of a camera that live-streamed into the main dining hall. When challenged on the frivolity of my actions I responded that a place that uses every sexist trope under the sun to attract frat boys and idiot bankers trying to fill their wank bank has no standing in this debate - and got banned.Two Megachurches in Dallas for wearing a Gay Pride t-shirt and entering their merchandise and sermon-on-DVD store inquiring about incense and myrrh flavored condoms.Calling the Rush Limbaugh show for telling him that draft dodgers and drug addicts have no standing in criticizing our Commander in Chief.A few bars and restaurants in San Jose and around for starting fights or being involved in them.Edit: yes, I am a rude, undesirable, morally depraved and pretty ugly human being. What do self-taught web developers wish they had known before they started?
I’m the co-founder and Dean at Flatiron School, a coding bootcamp that teaches beginners how to program, but I’m personally self-taught. So I not only help beginners learn to code every day, but I’ve also gone through it myself. I’ve found that “what I wish I knew” is sort of a fallacy. There’s no fairy dust to sprinkle on your code that can just make learning suddenly easier. It can be difficult. And most of the time, it takes some trying, failing, adjusting, and retrying to understand how you learn, how you work, and what you even need to know.I just had to put in the hours to get better, but there are two things I didn’t know were important when I first started out that I wish I did. If I’d known these things, it would have made the learning process a bit more efficient. Here’s what I wish I knew:1. Learning how to work with other developers is really important. When you’re teaching yourself, it’s tempting to measure how much you know by how much you can accomplish in a certain amount of time. I wish I knew that my own personal velocity wasn’t as important as my ability to work with others. I’d think, “I got from point A to point Z in a week. Next time, I want to cut that in half,” when I should have been thinking, “How do I get from A to F, while someone else gets from F to M, and another person is going from M to R.” Because this is how programming actually happens in the real world.When you’re self-taught you have to spend a lot of time working alone, but it is absolutely critical that you learn how to work with other developers. It’s not just about communicating, it is also about dividing a project up so you don’t step on each other’s toes — so you aren’t overriding anyone or breaking anything. Even if you’re a new developer, becoming good at working on your part without breaking other peoples’ parts can make a huge difference in how far you’ll go as a programmer.So, even if you’re teaching yourself, you shouldn’t learn alone. Look for local Meetups where you can connect with other aspiring programmers; start study groups with friends; join the coding community. Knowing how something works is different than knowing how to use it.There are a lot of architectures and patterns in programming. When you start teaching yourself, you likely have one of two options: (1) you can ignore them or (2) you can use them without necessarily knowing how they work or why they exist. For example, if you never feel the pain that object orientation addresses then you can use object-oriented code with no understanding of why it’s better, or you ignore object-oriented code entirely and write everything procedurally.I didn’t do a good job as a beginner of understanding why certain patterns and architectures existed. I either ignored a pattern because I didn’t understand it or I used it blindly before—finally—everything eventually clicked. I should have looked for that “click” moment earlier, and spent more time learning how and why things are built as opposed to just how to use them.This is why, at Flatiron School, we break a concept down into its parts in order to help students understand how it works. To understand how an engine works you have to start with pistons. Similarly, before we explain a Ruby wrapper around a database, we explain the database without a Ruby wrapper. You should try to go one layer deeper into the most important concepts. In cases when this isn’t as useful or efficient, you have to make really conscious decisions about how deep to go, and that does take some experience.I was also fortunate to have done a few really important things right. Here’s what I did know:1. Never, ever be afraid to put yourself out there.Always put yourself out there. Talk to the programmers you admire. Even the super famous ones can be surprisingly accessible. As I taught myself to code, I’d go to conferences and stop my favorite programmers in the hall, or I’d write a blog post I was proud of and email it to them. Most of the time, they were incredibly generous. They’d help me promote the article, and I’d get really valuable feedback.A lot of beginners are afraid to just signNow out to great programmers, but they shouldn’t be. In my experience, almost everyone was supportive. And if I hadn’t signNowed out, Yehuda Katz wouldn’t have offered to have lunch with me and Ilya Grigorik wouldn’t have tweeted about my blog post. Every piece of positive, constructive feedback was absolutely worth the times I had to hear something hard, or nothing at all. 2. Try to be your heroes. Always mimic programmers you look up to. I remember thinking, “I want to write code like this person — oh, they tried writing a book? I’ll try writing a book. They wrote a library? I’ll try writing a library. They have a blog? I’ll have a blog.” I would imitate the successful programmers doing what I wanted to do in every way. None of the libraries I wrote ever took off. None of the books I wrote ever took off. None of the blogs I wrote ever took off. But going through the motions taught me what it was to be a professional programmer — and all the stuff that goes with it.3. Read the books, even if you don’t understand them.When I was first learning, there were probably only five Ruby books in existence, and I had read them all. I got the chance to talk about them with a programmer I admired. Afterwards, he told me he really appreciated that I’d read everything.His compliment made me realize that if you’re going to be a part of the conversation and the community, you should try to know what you’re talking about. Even if you don’t understand what you’re reading, just do it. You will at the very least learn the seminal authors in your craft. Here are a few books to start with:Learn to Program by Chris Pine is a good book for people who haven’t programmed in any languageProgramming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmers’ GuideAgile Development with Rails by David Heinemeier HanssonWeaving the Web by Tim Berners-Lee is a good source history and context for what we’re doing todayBetween teaching myself and teaching others, I also learned these five huge things that beginners should know:1. How your code looks absolutely counts. You are writing code for humans. How your code reads and looks is very important. Having very good indentation, not leaving comments or broken code, correctly naming your variables, having method names that match the languages style and syntax — these are all critical. Beginners should pay attention to what their code looks like from the start.2. It’s better to be proficient in one thing than an expert in nothing.Nothing will ever replace the basics. Beginners often try to keep up with technology in the same way that advanced programmers do. But all the languages are the same when you’re a beginner; it shouldn’t be a priority to use all the newest, hottest tools when you’re starting out.If you’re really good at one language and you can use it to build amazing things, no one is going to care what language you used to make them. Beginners shouldn’t care about the languages they’re using. They should care that their chosen language matches their goals, if they’re getting expertise and depth and in it — and, of course, if they love using it.3. Learning to program doesn’t happen all at once. Learning how to code isn’t going to be a constant, continuous accumulation of understanding. It’s going to be an S-curve, with troughs of not really getting it punctuated by massive increases in efficiency. You just have to be diligent and get through the troughs because this is going to keep happening throughout your career. Remind yourself that if you keep going, it’s going to make sense eventually.4. Ruby might be a good place to start.(2) is more important here. Specific languages don’t matter so much as a beginner, but at Flatiron School, we have strong preference for starting out with Ruby before covering more languages like JavaScript. Matz, the programmer who created Ruby, built the language to make other programmers happy, and in my opinion, Ruby really does value your happiness. It embraces complexity, individuality, and multiple approaches to every project.Dutch computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra once said, “The tools we use have a profound (and devious!) influence on our thinking habits, and, therefore, on our thinking abilities,” which means that programming languages can actually change the way we think about problems. Thinking in Ruby is not myopic or restrictive. It’s a liberating, expressive way to think, and it’s no coincidence that it is also used to build awesome things. If I had to learn again, I’d still start with Ruby.5. Totally fall in love with it. A lot of programmers, including myself, will tell you that you have to fall in love with coding to really learn it. Honestly, it’s difficult to get through the tough parts without loving it. But realize this: the surest thing that has ever moved humanity forward is a leverage on technology—science put to productive use. Learning to code will allow you to change the world. How could you not want to be a part of that? If you’re sitting alone reading code and losing heart, remember the opportunities that you’re unlocking by learning to code and how fantastic this moment in time is—let that get you through it.Finally, always remember that the journey is the most important part. It’s impossible to just know things in programming. But coming to know them is the best way to really understand them — and to better understand yourself as a programmer.It’s almost important to note: I’m self-taught, but you don’t have to be.
