What are common scams in India?
Common Scams in India:Scene 1: Aadhar mobile number update:Went to a private Aadhar e-seva kendra, filled form and was ready to submit. Assumed it’s going to be nominal charges for same. Lady said 300rs. I said bye bye.Went to e-seva kendra. This time all done. Lady asked for 50rs. I said I know its 25rs.She said “Sir we have to pay rent as well.”I said “As you are asking very less compared to others I will pay 50rs.”Felt bad about it later. Complained to UIDAI via twitter. Got reply that they will register an official complain and take necessary action. In addition to this its very common that these e-seva center charge anything between 100–300rs for new Aadhar registration(should be completely free) or update(nominal charge of 25rs). Saw it happening in one instance, raised my voice but no one supported. Seems everyone else was just wanted to get their work done and I was creating a nuisance.Scene 2: Mobile number portability:Went to Idea store. With commanding voice, I said “I am here for MNP”, as I was giving them a new customer. Got reply from lady “minimum recharge of 475rs will be needed for MNP”. I said “MNP charge is 19rs, what recharge I do after that is my choice”. But this lead to nothing. Left the store.Visited a local idea retailer. Inquired about MNP and he said 178rs minimum recharge. Didn’t want to argue again. Paid the money and left for home. Felt bad again, later complained to idea_cellular and TRAI via twitter. Still to receive a response.Even for mobile and Aadhar linking some retailers charge money, its supposed to be completely free.Scene 3: Flash Back - Last monthHad a bad mood and my train was about to leave. Thought some water could help. Went to stall and asked for two water bottles. Vendor asked for 40rs(20rs per bottle, MRP was 15rs). I became furious and scolded him left and right. Got my money back (10rs). Complained to local DRM via twitter. Got response that action will be taken and immediate fine of 500rs is charged to vendor. You see what I am trying to say, here in our country(not only our country) people always find a way to dig out money or more money by this means or another, many are aware of it but many just ignore it. I know I can’t be idealistic all the time but it disturbs me seeing people’s common lust for money around me.Call it a scam or whatever, but it’s part of our life, it’s more of a mindset and reflection of our ideologies. We might accept it, ignore it or fight against it.Sometimes it seems like endless cycle, because “We the people” always find innovative ways to scam each other.Take Care.PS. Purpose of this answer not to brag, but to make aware. What you do after that is up to you.****Made few corrections, Thanks for views, comments and upvotes, If this helps even 1% of who read, my effort was worth of something.********Corrected Aadhaar update charges as 25rs, uidai official twitter handle communicated 25+taxes hence the confusion. I would like to thank all who appreciated me in comments. Still you see I was not perfect during handling these situations, hoping to get better with that.********Update: Idea care responded, got call from manager of said idea store, he apologised and asked me to visit again. He said there are no charges for mnp and recharge is optional. I told him to mention this everytime time any customer comes for mnp rather then projecting a mandatory recharge. Also asked to make sure his team members follow that. I said I or any of my friends will be visiting store anytime and will complain again if same incident happens. Hope this is some kind of win.Got update regarding e-seva kendra complaint as well. “Fine is imposed and warning is issued.” Couldn't check personally but this is official reply.****

Police officers: You're standing by your cruiser, and a couple walks past you. The man smiles, but his girlfriend mouths "help m
This type of scenario has two potential issues. The first is the safety of the woman and those around the area. Public safety concern, especially where a possible immediate need for action is warranted, is a top priority and will give you plenty of authority to stop the two. It will also give you the authority to make a safety check, which can be as easy as asking the woman if she is okay. The second issue is less clear at this point, but it is the potential for a crime having already been committed or one that is about to be committed. We know that “help me” could have multiple meanings, but under the circumstances, it would appear to suggest both a potential safety threat and a potential crime. In this sense, you have entered at least the realm of mere suspicion if not fully into reasonable suspicion to stop and make an inquiry.Mere Suspicion is when the officer has enough information to allow for the natural feeling that a public safety issue or a crime is present. This is the first step in our Probable Cause model, and it is where most self-directed investigations begin. Examples would be hearing the sound of breaking glass in a shopping district at 3:00 a.m., or in seeing a person climb out of a window of a house in the middle of the day, or observing a person testing the locks on a door. In each situation the officer lacks enough evidence to prove that a crime is being or has just been committed; however, there is enough to make a reasonable person believe that additional inquiry is needed. In this instance, the act of mouthing the words “help me,” especially when taken under the condition of silence, will prevent mere suspicion easily. So the first step you want to take is to prevent them from moving away and make an attempt to separate the woman from the man. I’d start with a simple request, “May I speak with you two for a moment?”At this point, we are using a request because we don’t want to escalate the situation. We want the request to be clear, stated loud enough to be heard, and with enough authority in the voice that it conveys the request is a serious one. It does not have to be an order, at least not at this point, but it should not be tentative or leave either party with the impression that you won’t follow-up.Even if the guy turns around and questions you about the legality of your request, you have accomplished the first mission of the intervention. You have stopped them from moving away from you, which in turn keeps the woman in a safe zone, of sorts, while now opening the door to her being able to separate from the man.On the crime side of things, we are also looking for evidence that the woman is being held against her will. These signs may appear in her posture, the way she responds to request, or in the way she moves along with the man. He may not have realized she mouthed the words “help me,” so it would be reasonable for the two of them to have very different reactions. Just as watching her demeanor and response is important, so too is the need to watch his demeanor and response. The next step will be to put a little space between the man and the woman. “Ma’am, could you step over here near me?” may do the trick. If she hesitates then watch her facial expression, her posture and movement, and for any signs that she is uncomfortable with the request. It could be that she was playing a practical joke on her companion, which now means she’ll have to convince you that there is no need for action, or it could be that she is truly in need of help. By moving the two apart, you reduce the chance for the man to grab her or injure her in any way. It also gives you a chance to have a bit more control and access to the woman in case something does start to go wrong. There are too many variables now for us to give a specific answer other than to say that you will be working off of the action/reaction of the two people. If the woman truly needs help then your intervention will provide that opportunity. It will be the actions/reactions of both the man and woman that will determine if you heighten the level of the contact or if you find it to be unwarranted.Raising the level of contact could mean physically separating the couple, taking the man into custody, and even arresting him. In a different case, the matter may turn completely on the intentional actions of the woman in mouthing “help me” as she walked by. You don’t indicate what her facial expression or demeanor was like, but assuming that they match the need for help then everything we’ve done so far is correct. On the other hand, if she mouthed the words “help me” with a big grin on her face, then you need to be a bit more cautious in how you stop them and separate them. It is because of this uncertainty at this point that we can’t really go much further with the analysis.

What scary gut feeling did you have that turned out to be true?
I was on a date at the time with a guy I was really into.I chose the local Kmart to spend time together because he was very nervous and awkward in romantic situations. We were in the toy aisle nerding out over a comic book poster covered in heroes. I remember I was rapid fire naming off all the ones I knew and suddenly out of nowhere I was struck with the sound of a song my grandmother used to sing to me when I was a toddler.I started to shake. I apologized and asked to borrow his phone since I didn't have a cell at the time.I called my mom, absolutely frantic.“Mom is Grandma okay?” There was a pause as if she were shocked or trying to process my sudden question. “She's had a stroke.” she explained to me that she was 'fine' now but she was worried.I fell to tears, apologized to my date and asked him to take me home. I needed to have time to think about things. I was halfway across the country from her.I decided I would go see her for one last birthday since those were the fondest moments I had with her. She would always ask me what I wanted to eat and I was so in love with her cooking. No one has ever nor will they ever trump her food and it breaks my heart to this very day.My date asked to go with me to support me. My family gave me the thumbs up and we flew out to see her.I wasn't going to wait any longer to see her. I was bent on making it back to her before the year was up.I remember sitting down at the table with her and Grandpa and there was a strange feeling between us all. Like an emptiness. Almost like she was a stranger. We talked about plans for my birthday but there were many pauses. Worrying pauses. I mentioned my favourite dish to her, one she taught me specifically how to make when I was very small and she continued making it often well into my adult years and she had no idea what I was talking about. Her mind was slipping from her. She prided herself in many things and her cooking was one of them. She wouldn't have ever forgotten a recipe. She clipped them from magazines, wrote them down, traded them with friends and family-- this was wrong and terrifying to watch unfold. The night of my birthday she was sluggish. This was a mistake. I should have come sooner on a day she wouldn't have wanted to do anything like this for. My regrets were heavy but I had no way of knowing beforehand how awful this situation was until I was walking closely behind her down the hallway as she carried the food.“Grandma let me take that-- please- I'm worried about you. Do you need to go lay down? Are you feeling okay?” She would smile weakly and tell me she was fine but at that point I wasn't having it. This wasn't a birthday anymore it was a red flag. She excused herself from the patio where we all were and I sat down beside my mom and narrowed my eyes at her. “am I the only person who isn't blind here? She needs to go to a hospital NOW.”It took way too much convincing. The party eventually fell apart as my grandfather started to argue with us. “She's fine. She just needs to lay down.” “No, this isn't like her. She's obviously sick and in pain.”My mother finally saw reason and we all left to gather around her. Before we even got to her bed we could hear her crying. My grandfather was saying “she can go to the doctor's tomorrow.” “No. Now.”I was scared to be the booming voice of reason against him. He was the head of the family. No one questioned him. I felt like he was brushing off this terrifying display because 'if I ignore it- it'll go away.” But it was so clear she needed help.My mother and my uncle's estranged sister lifted her up and out of bed. She cried. I could tell she was scared and accepted this needed to happen. My grandfather argued with us all the way to the car but he bit the bullet and drove her anyways. It was too late by the time we arrived. Everyone was there, scared out of their mind at the reality of the situation. In the waiting room biting their nails.I was told upon arrival they had to insert a tube down her throat. That she was terrified and tried to speak to my mother. That she was on life support for a while.I don't remember the exact description of the cause of her death. Kidney stones? A collection of them? Internal bleeding? It's all so distant now. I think she was there for two days before she passed away.It left me unsettled. It left me feeling a massive amount of guilt. If only I visited sooner. If only I had known how bad she was I wouldn't have discussed a birthday gathering. She didn't need to be up and doing work while she was like that. While she was so frail and in pain.I still haven't accepted that she's gone. Over a decade ago and everything feels so vivid to me.I think about her and her food she prided herself so much in. I remember the taste of her buttermilk pies, her beef tip stews, her chicken dumplings, her specialty chocolate chip cookies and Coca-Cola brownies and fudge bites. I remember vividly every time I walked into her house the smell of cooked or baked food. Her over abundance so that she can share with her guests. The counter she welcomed us all to sit at. The laughing. The long conversations. Her patience with me because Lord knows I was a difficult human being to listen to lolFroggy went a courting was the song that creeped into my head that day. Only my grandmother had ever sung it to me. I didn't think of it often but when I did I was very fond of that memory.Call your grandparents folks. Tell them you love them. Be mindful of the small things that may be red flags. You may not get a second chance.

I feel no sympathy for the homeless because I feel like it is their own fault. Are there examples of seemingly "normal" and resp
I met a gentleman one day while I was walking my dog. Then living in a downtown loft on the edge of a gentrified portion of the city, I met many homeless people. This particular story might help you to understand:“Jim” was nearing his first year of being homeless. Two years before, he was making six figures in the financial industry. He got caught in a layoff and was unable to find a job. His wife left and took the kids and house with her, along with a large portion of their savings. (The retirement account into which he had solely contributed) He lived in his car until he no longer had money to put gas in it to move it around. It finally got towed. He had no other family, nowhere to go, and could not find even a minimum wage job. No phone for call back interviews, or emails. No address. No presentable clothes. That’s how it happens. Now imagine that you are the hiring manager for a company, and see his resume online. It is filled with award-winning accomplishments, but not updated to reflect his current employment situation. You signNow out to him. IF HE STILL by some chance has managed to keep a phone, you csll him in for an interview. If you are having trouble being sympathetic for those less fortunate than you, my guess is when you see a disheveled man walk into your office, the interview will be over. If he didn't have a phone in the first place, the interview would have never been scheduled. That's how it perpetuates.Never take your personal good fortune for granted, lest one day you end up with nothing, and need just one break from someone who thinks that because you've fallen on hard times, you are abnormal and no longer respectable.

An argumentative essay is similar to a persuasive essay, in which you set out to persuade the reader to agree with your position on a topic. What do you think of this NBC article which calls for the regulation of hate speech?
What do you think of this NBC article which calls for the regulation of hate speech?Opinion | Is the First Amendment too broad? The case for regulating hate speechIt’s idiotic rhetoric. The very first line of the article is “Must we defend Nazis?”Followed immediately by an incredibly disingenuous “For many free speech advocates, the answer is not just ‘yes,’ but ‘hell, yes.’”There is just so much stupid in this article, I’m going to focus on the highlights. They mischaracterize the argument for Free Speech. They put their words in our mouths so that they can argue. “It's precisely because they are so loathed that Nazis must be vigorously defended, the argument goes.” No. We’re not arguing to defend the loathsome, we’re arguing that what is loathsome to one may not be loathsome to all. It is those who are in power who get to determine what constitutes “hate speech”, so before you go banning words that upset you, consider what will happen when the other party is in power and can use those laws you wrote against you. Free speech is valuable precisely because it protects unpopular speech, be that the vitriol of Neo-Nazis or the radical words of Martin Luther King Jr.Then we get this gem. “The best way to preserve lizards is not to preserve hawks” The argument is nonsensical. It is a false analogy, entirely unrelated to the matter at hand, and being deliberately used to dismiss valid arguments. Then, they try to “prove” that hate speech causes real harm. “For example, a John Hopkins study published in 2013 concluded that being exposed to racism can lead to high blood pressure and stress among African Americans.” Well gee, reading this garbage certainly spikes my blood pressure. This article should be banned as hate speech, because it harmed me. Jon Davis just wrote an excellent answer on to this question where he address the difference between harm, as I would use the term, and “harm” as idiot ideologues misuse the term.“Probably the most popular counterargument to regulating speech is the slipper slope argument.” I’m going to take puerile pleasure in pointing out the spelling mistake here. However, it turns out we’re right. Just look at the case of Lindsey Shepard. of Wilfrid Laurier University. She was accused of violating Hate Speech laws in Canada for showing a video to her students by one Jordan Peterson, without first telling them what to think of the video. The slippery slope isn’t hypothetical, it’s happening right now.As I said in Murphy Barrett's answer to Why do conservatives feel the need for a right to hate speech? Can they not keep their feelings to themselves? It’s not the right to hate speech we care about. It’s the right to free speech, of which hate speech is an unfortunate side effect.Free speech is vital to liberty and a free society.Free speech that only protects non-offensive words is about as useful as a solar powered flashlight. When you need it, it doesn’t work.Consider, what is hate speech? Who decides? You? Us? Them? People who prattle on about hate speech seem to always forget that they won’t always be the ones in power. It’s great, when your side gets to decide what is “hateful” based on your values, your limits, and your taboos. But what happens when the other party is in power? What happens when hate speech is based on their values, their limits, and their taboos? Before conceding to the State any power or authority, you must consider first what happens if the other party would use that same power against you. What do you plan to do when hate speech is illegal, but is defined as advocating for the murder of the unborn (abortion), denying the Lord God Almighty (atheism), and sedition (criticizing the US in any way)?Do you still want to ban hate speech? What you call hate speech, as part of free speech, has to be protected. There is no way to write a law that bans “hate speech” and protects “good speech”, apart from personal opinion, and that is no way to write laws. The law must be consistent, and treat people equally, else it is a tyrannical law subject to the whims of the rulers.Neonazis, disgusting swine that they are, must be allowed to march in Skokie so that great men like Martin Luther King Jr. can March on Washington.Look, you don’t have to like what assholes say. You don’t have to give them a soapbox. But you cannot take their own soapbox from them, beat them, fine them, jail them, just for saying things you don’t like. You ignore them, or you prove them wrong.“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”-1st Amendment, US Constitution

What's the shadiest tactic you've witnessed HR use at your job?
They used false “help wanted” ads to fire their own employees that were looking for a new job.I worked for a lead generation service which sold qualified lists of homeowners (and their telephone numbers) to financial advisers. Then, they sold those same financial advisers a telemarketing service that would call those homeowners and arrange appointments with them. There is so much that is “shady” about this company that it is impossible to bring up one questionable act without first explaining several previous questionable or downright illegal acts. (UPDATE: if you want more details about how bad it was to work for this place, check out John Hursey's answer to What is the most ridiculous reason for which you have been fired?)After a particularly horrifying series of events right around the holiday season, I decided to begin looking for a new job. I got on craigslist, and I found several positions in customer service and data entry that were available right in my city. I sent them a quick email with my resume attached, and waited for a response. The next day I was called into the President’s office. He invited me to sit down. His mother (the vice president of the company) was standing behind him. He asked me if I was happy working for him.Luckily for me, I knew this was a trap of some kind and answered honestly. I told him that I was interested in having more free time with a more flexible schedule and that it would be impossible to do so with my current job, so I was in the process of looking for something else. I also told him that I had informed my direct supervisor of my intentions last week, and that I would give the company adequate warning—at least two weeks notice—before I quit.He and his mother looked at each other. Well, he said, it turns out that one of the companies I had applied to was the very same company I worked for now. I thought that was odd, because I don’t have any intellectual disabilities or mental impairments that would indicate I would apply to the same company that I currently worked for. Nevertheless, I told him that I suppose this was good news, since perhaps I could simply transfer to whatever this open position was and still maintain my employment with his company while working the schedule that was most convenient for myself. Not so fast. It turned out there wasn’t any positions available in those departments. Their strategy was to entice applicants with positions in data entry and customer service and then during the interview inform them that those positions had been filled; those applicants were then offered much less pay and schedule flexibility as a salesman. In addition, current employees that applied for these jobs were summarily fired for being “disloyal.”A month later I was terminated, for reasons I still do not fully understand. I applied for unemployment, and when I explained the series of events leading to my termination the lady at the unemployment office literally scoffed at me and told me that my story was unbelievable. She even called me personally at home to tell me that the company was contesting my unemployment filing and that she expected me to lose the arbitration process. The day of the hearing I got a phone call from the same lady, in tears. She apologized profusely for how she had treated me. She had just completed a five-minute interaction with the president and his mother, confirming not only my story but also her worst fears about humanity in general.

What are the major character flaws of a covert narcissist and abuse tactics used?
After 35 years of marriage to one, I’d love to share a description of the craziness. Maybe now that the internet exists and a confused partner in the devaluation stage can hop online and do some research, I can save them the pain I’ve gone through and they’ll leave before they’ve been split All Bad and the torture begins. The worst character flaw my husband has is his Denial. With that one tool, he skips merrily away from any admission of guilt for his abusiveness. He lies not just to me, his therapist and to the world (he’s very covert), but to himself—Delusion, IOW. And of course no apology is ever needed, because HE is the injured party. The most damaging flaw at present is his newly perfected skill of Projection. A clueless former therapist and his current Flying Monkey have enabled him to project every single flaw, problem and disorder he has onto me. He’s now assumed a new false persona of The Martyr Saint that is irritating to the point of making me literally sick. He’s always been (privately) condescending and has patronized me maddeningly, but now his nose literally goes up in the air as he delivers pronouncements straight from his bromance/Flying Monkey’s mouth. And their smear campaign is widening all the time. It used to be just within their circle of friends, but now they’re including mutual friends of ours. Some of them contacted me last year after a party he went to without me, where he was playing the martyr and whining to everyone who would listen about his worry that he wouldn’t “be happy in his retirement”…after 35 years of abusing me. What do you say to that?Other flaws that lead to abuse: he has a history of spending lavishly on himself, especially after a narcissistic injury (Retail Therapy); he will drive in a show-off-y way (especially swinging at full speed around blind curves like a race car driver) when I’m in the car, knowing it terrifies me; he forms sickeningly subservient and worshipful relationships with men he perceives as being higher status than himself and turns them into Flying Monkeys who will back him 100% on his projection of his flaws onto me.The list goes on, but that’s the gist. If you’re reading this and you’re young enough to start over and have sufficient work skills/job history to be able to support yourself RUN LIKE HELL!!! Be thankful that there is a place like this where you can educate yourself. If it had existed 35 years ago, I might have had a completely different life—kids, grandkids, happiness with a respectful, sane partner.
