The pdf file is an XML file which is a data representation ( a string of words) of the file. When you open the PDF document, it is an object in the PDF. An annotator is something that takes the XML file and turns it into something that can be read/executed by humans, which is essentially what we are doing here. An annotater is written in Python and takes a file as input and outputs some data. This is done by calling some APIs like open or read .
Here is an example of a simple annotator.

This simple annotator does the following for every read:
Reads the XML file and converts it into a Python dictionary where each key is an annotation and each value is the parsed XML.
Converts the Python dictionary into a text file. This file is used by our python script to read, execute the data, and turn it into a Python object.
The script uses the json module that is part of the standard library as it is the one library which supports XML documents.
The script will call the open and read functions to open and read the file respectively.
