Seth yurman panchayath on Thank You Aida and you did a great job so that's the most difficult challenge I post to people is straight off the bat with my name and then I tell them by the way it's straightforward you can call me punch so good morning to all of you and I'm delighted to be here because as yet introduced arizona state university has come a long way and is doing some amazing things in the higher education sector in fact we are seeing increasingly as a national model on so many fronts i won't have the time here to go through all of that but what i'm going to do however is to talk a little bit about arizona state university that you may or may not know such that it complements some of the other presenters and i'll be happy to discuss some of this during the panel discussion too so first of all I want to start off with the charter of the University I want to draw your attention to three things the first thing is that we at ASU measure ourselves by not whom we exclude but by whom we include and how they succeed this is an extremely important imperative that we need to have in our nation today if we want to rise up to the global challenges of how we need to have enough if whether it is stem skilled or other skilled workforce that is required in large numbers and if you look at most of the universities all great universities by the way doing a great job but they define themselves by we accept only the point one percent or one percent of the applicants to our University and while there are many other qualified applicants to that University they are not able to accept them for whatever set of reasons what ASU has chosen to do is to say that if you are qualified for higher education that you will have an opportunity to express your skills and therefore be a contributing member to the economy the glowing of the growing innovation and knowledge-based economy so we have 72,000 immersion students campus immersion students we have another 20,000 digital immersion students there are no the largest universities in the US and I say that as a lead off the second point because oftentimes people would think if you are large you should not be good and that is the stereotype that we have essentially you know challenged while you can admit those students who are qualified to enter the university you can also provide them an outstanding experience and in turn have a university that is focused on excellence and you will see some metrics by which i will show you how that excellence is demonstrated and last but not the least that we are contributing to the social economic cultural well-being of the environment that we are embedded in these are three important components of the Charter that we will advance on all of them at the same time simultaneously and have shown tremendous progress let me start off with this I do not know how many of you have been watching the news just a couple of weeks ago ASU was named by the US News and World Report okay a neutral agency that ranks universities they said that ASU is the most innovative university in the United States and it turns out that Sanford comes second and MIT is third so that's okay I mentioned what I want to draw your attention to is when we are talking about innovation it is on every aspect of what we do in the University it is not just a siloed portal of activities that we are innovative in that we will be innovative in how we recruit students that we will be innovative in how do we make students that are to be successful in the University how do we provide them all kinds of experiences that are different i'm going to come to it in a minute what a student needs these days in order to be successful in the innovation knowledge economy how can we innovative in our research enterprise how can we be innovative in our external outreach activities every aspect of the university and how we are innovative is what this measures and therefore you know I have seen that ASU as a model University in addition to that as I was saying we measure ourselves by the output and the outcomes Wall Street Journal recently asked potential employers where do you get your best graduates from it turns out all public's and privates included as you ranked fifth in the nation in terms of how the employers saw our graduates coming out of a su and that's the job of a higher education enterprise is to get those students who are qualified and turn them into outstanding graduates who are fueling the economy and if you take under measure as Fulbright scholarships which are for the top of the top kind of students that go and secure these scholarships again we are very very competitive in that we ranked third in the nation ahead of many of those universities that you would think would be third in this list and very very proud of that while as I was saying that we are achieving these in terms of ensuring that our students are successful we are also at the same time having a robust research Enterprise we are the fastest growing research university in the nation and just looking at the trajectory just over the last 15 years we have more than tripled our research enterprise and I not notice here or note here the dollars are the dollars that we secure from competitive sources by fantastic ideas that our faculty and students put forth in order to be able to be successful in this metric of research dollars which is then used to support outstanding students faculty to continue the research activities and then the innovation that arise and stem from these research activities and I will talk about that in a moment again before I jump to the outcomes because it's the Higher Education Forum one of the things that we pride at ASU is that we are not turning out strong disciplinary expertise students only as important as it is if you are a chemist if you are a computer scientist whatever that disciplinary expertise that might be we are not only focused on that but we are developing those skill sets that we believe are exceedingly important for our students to be successful again in the innovation and knowledge economy and this is where I was just making a comment outside in the green room with a colleague of mine that I said that this is what is going to make us stay and continue to be a head off and being the leading edge globally because our students will have those skill set which will not be only the stem skill sets but all these other skill sets how to work in a team how to be entrepreneur entrepreneurial how to be leaders how do you think innovatively how do you think globally how to solve problems innovatively how to think creatively and that they will also have this mindset of service internships or working in corporate sector as interns is a volunteer you're paid how do you embed design thinking all of these are important skill sets and this is something that we provide for our students as an environment at ASU again an anchor back to the most innovative University these are the kinds of things that we do to provide our students the best qualifications in order for them to be not only great employees but also great employers of the future I'm just picking one of our stellar Institute's which is a transdisciplinary Institute bringing together physicist computer scientists engineers policy ethics people from social cultural behavioral all of those working together in solving problems for improving health or sustainability or national security and this institute works on one premise that we will inspire by nature inspirations for solving problems that the society faces and I'm just giving you a sense of just one Institute and the kind of economic impact that that Institute creates in so many fronts called the Biodesign Institute we work very closely with industry in many ways we work with industry who are already in Arizona and when they are thinking about expanding their operations how might we sit with them and talk to them to find out their needs how might we be the partner how might we work with them as if they had their own University that if a company access X university is my university and that could be a SEO and that would be a su and that we would be responsive to all the needs of the industry and that we will engage with the industry in every aspect not only producing the qualified workforce so we work on supporting industry development we support business retention we also support business attraction to Arizona on all fronts we work very very closely with our industry partners economic development partners across the various cities as well as the state the other skill set in the mindset that we also expose our students do is this entrepreneurial mindset some of them may turn out to be entrepreneurs today or tomorrow or some may just use those entrepreneurial skill sets to be more innovative in the workplace if it's public service of its corporate environment whatever that might be that they can be innovative in the environment that they are in and they can produce better outcomes and so we have a number of programs for those entrepreneurially minded students all the way from freshman students coming into the university participating in an innovation challenge or a changemaker center environment to at the end of the day of their fantastic ideas how do we surround them with some small investments space mentorship connecting them to other programs that can provide them funding how can we work on all fronts and even more how can we take people in the community that can then take advantage of all the resources of the University so they too can be entrepreneurial that that is we are not limited to just only taking our faculty and students but also people in the community if they have good ideas to make them entrepreneurial the economic impact in twenty fourteen alone in terms of County GDP is about 3.1 billion in 2009 3.9 in 2014 and then we have state and local tax revenue contributions as well as the construction growth we have built several million square foot of space for research as well as new classrooms as well as in through public-private partnerships in terms of how student and dorms and all the facilities surrounding the student experiences at ASU with respect to chandler with every city we partner as innovative leave as we can just to pick one example since we are in chandler we have the chandler innovation center just right close out of here a few a few blocks away where we have teamed up with tech shop so that anybody can come in with a good idea and productize that idea and test that idea and therefore be able to then become entrepreneurs or to be able to validate and be excited by the fact that they have created something and our students use it and community members use it so it's a great partnership and this is how we work is whatever it takes we partner with the appropriate environment which can serve their success objectives their outcomes as well as making sure that we are contributing to Arizona and the nation to be globally competitive you
