[Music] well thank you for being here with us today and welcome we're glad you're here I'm Charlie Williams I'm the president CEO of Citizens Bank and Trust and welcome to our third annual Citizens Business Summit a many of you I think have been here before and there are our first two summits and we appreciate the fact that you've supported us and that you're back with us today hopefully you've taken things away from our summit in the past that you can use in your business and professional life if you're here with us for the first time today we welcome you we put a lot of time and energy in this it's a fun thing for our bank to do and I hope you will leave today feeling like this is time well spent with us we have a busy schedule we've traditionally had three speakers today we have four so we're going to be quick I'm going to be quick and then we'll jump into the program but I did want to speak a quick minute about why we we feel as citizens Bank and trust that this is important for us to do it's you know we are a community bank and we feel like this is part of our core charge as a community bank to invest and reinvest in the communities that we serve we feel like we need to be a resource beyond just being a place for for deposits and loans but that we can give things back to the community from an educational perspective we have core values within our bank and and this summit aligns well with our core values we've we've put them up in a past summit but our first core value is we do the right thing we have others we build loyal relationships we serve our community we choose to make a difference and we pursue growth that knowledge so based on on those we feel like a summit such as this aligns well with what we do as an organization it's been said many times that in the community bank world that if you grow your community your community will grow you and we believe that within our organization we're up to about a hundred and fifteen employees all of our employees are passionate about us doing this and living our core values with us every day and I feel like they understand that their job is to grow customer relationships and for us to grow as an organization as a directory zone but making a contribution is something that's important to the bank and I think it comes with with being a local community bank and the fact that you all are here participating with us makes it even more worthwhile you know our bank was 15 years old in March of this year we started a March 3rd of oh three at zero I know that Mike alright our founder and the board members and the employees that were here at the start that's probably gone by and in a flash for them but it's been an exciting time for us we had a big event a couple of months ago we crushed 500 million in total assets which was a big deal for us it had been a goal of ours for a long time and it was a happy day in our bank when when we were able to report that we have some new goals now but we have many of our key employees here today and I hope that you get a chance to meet with them they've accomplished a lot I hope they're the ones that are smiling at every table because they they deserve to be they've accomplished a lot and I and as for me I'm just blessed to get a chance to work with them every day I'd like to also recognize our wildcat tellers you might have been greeted by them when you came in for those that you that might not know we we operate a branch within Guntersville high school that's tied to a a banking class and it's run by these students and they've been here helping us today and thank you all for being here and I'm hopeful that maybe one day some of them will be addressing us as a speaker or attending as a as a business owner or an employer of choice are a leader in our community and that's that's part of our goal with them so if y'all would help me welcome the our Wildcat more than anything just know that we're grateful to have you today we're looking forward to an exciting day I'm confident that's something that's that gets said here today will resonate with you and that you can take away and use so I'm going to just move out of the way and get on and get started introduce our first speaker which will be the Honorable mayor Tommy battle from the city of Huntsville our great neighbor to the north mayor battles in his third term in Huntsville has been dedicated to creating jobs and diversifying the economy in Huntsville and through his leadership he's brought together a coalition of regional leaders that are committed to recruiting industry and working on workforce development which is a regional issue for us and high-quality education and as a result Huntsville leads the state in in new jobs and economic investment you know we have about 25 percent of our this is a statistic I've heard over the years of our numbers of people in our in our County that commute out of the county to go to work every day and I know many of them go to Huntsville Huntsville is a is a vibrant community with a lot of bright people and I think the mayor's toughest job is to probably bring that group of people together for all the initiatives that are going on up in in Huntsville I think mayor battle has thought strategically over the long term there's a master plan that's going on in Huntsville right now a comprehensive plan that will shape the Huntsville's future for many years to come I know the mayor's been a champion of collaborative collaboratively working with the citizens is it's fiscally a fiscally responsible leader the Huntsville operates with a balanced budget and it has had a triple-a credit rating since 2009 and that is something that that not a lot of communities can boast but I think they've put Huntsville in the enviable position of having a stable economy and quite honestly Huntsville is an economic powerhouse in our state and has attracted some global attention as ibly a mayor battle was born in Birmingham in 1955 he moved to Huntsville in 1980 after graduating from the University of Alabama he's four years later became a member of the Huntsville City Council where he served as the Finance chair he's had a successful career as an entrepreneur and a businessman and thirty years of community service have prepared him well to be the the CEO of Huntsville the mayor's married to the former yield of Salmons a retired kindergarten teacher they have one son drew a daughter-in-law Lauren and a grandson George and I would just ask you to please join me in welcoming mayor battle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you today you it's really nice to be here and see this many people out talking about how we're going to make our area a better area how we're going to do better in our business how we're going to look forward how we're going to change our thinking how we're going to think about what the future holds for us and that's the secret to success that we have how to think about what's going to happen in the future and how to get ready for that future how to make sure that we are ready for that future and as you come together today and I say as we come together today because we are all part of one region 110,000 people a day come into the city of hustle and work in the city of hustling go out to another community many of them come to come to the Sand Mountain area and in alternately 60,000 people live in the city of Huntsville and go out to another community and work many of them in the Sand Mountain area and then they come they come back to Huntsville that night so we are a community and we're a community that is gathered together and and that works together and we live we live and die together with the successes that we have or the successes that you have the successes that you have are the successes that that happened in Huntsville also so it's very important that we work together and we work together for the future of our community I was looking at Mark Eaton's book and I'm not gonna be able to stay for the talks of Mark we flipped ahead and we figured out number one know your job number two do what you're asked number three make people look good and now I also want to say make people look forward and number four protect others what a great things I'll start thinking on those things as he's going to be ready to talk to you minute one of the things that we always talk about is a change as an OU is is your only constant and that's what I try to drill into our people day in and day out or department heads and everybody else change is something that we see every day everybody who has hair that looks like mine with a little bit of gray rich I see you over there everybody has has gray hair in this group you've seen a lot of change over your years and you've seen change coming in only 12% of the fortune 500 companies for 1955 are still here remember the names of Eastern Airlines compact MCI Worldcom TWA Enron those companies aren't here anymore and only 12% of the of the fortune 500 companies from 1955 are still here thirty-eight point six million Americans need to change jobs or learn new skills to hold down a job in 2030 think about this this drive that we've got on autonomous driving we're already doing autonomous driving over in Afghanistan and in Iraq where we have convoys which are going autonomously with it without drivers going from place to place to because that way you can't blow something up and kill somebody but we have autonomous drivers happening today in truck convoys over and in Iraq and in Afghanistan think about if we turn that autonomous driving here and we start doing the autonomous driving here the word is that probably in the next 15 years 25 percent of your workforce 25 percent of your where you drive will be autonomously and if you do that what are we going to do with the truck drivers who are sitting out there right now driving trucks from place to place what are we going to do with the uber drivers what are we going to do with the taxi drivers limousine drivers how are we going to retrain those people to come back in the workforce and be part of our workforce one small example of how we're going to have to retrain our workforce and retrain them to be able to move in the future all these plants that we have advanced manufacturing you see all the robotics coming in the robotics mean that you don't have the people moving something from here to there but you also have to have someone who knows how to tune those robotics machines how to take care of those robotic machines that's something that we're gonna have to have a changing workforce and we've got to have the mindset that we will change our workforce as we see that the needs become necessary 275 years for the telephone to reach 50 million users the app Angry Birds 235 days now do you think communication has changed I was talking to somebody the other day we were talking about my uncle I ran for governor 50 years ago I ran for governor five months ago and got elected to come back to be a mayor of a hustle which I might have one but but I was thinking about that the changes that they had back in that day they would have to go 50 years ago in 1958 if they came in to find out what was going on headquarters had Nicole found a pay phone put a quarter in or dime back then I had to call in long distance and find out what was going on we used an iPhone we used and we were able to talk and stay in constant contact I was able to go throughout the state and keep my keep my iPad working and I can answer questions back home on a minute-by-minute basis things have really changed in what we've seen there have been changes in resources many of y'all can can recognize with this agriculture agents out there in North Alabama we've seen farms Sun soil water that was also how we made our money 50 years ago a good mule and a horse and a plow back in that day 50 years ago mom and pop could have a little convenience store they could run the convenience store they could send their kids to school send them to college and they'd come out ready to go into the new workforce today mom and pop can't run a convenience store because you can't have an environmental engineer you got to have an accountant you got to have a lawyer you got have everything else that you've got to have a chain of convenience stores to run so things have changed we've had changes in resources we have a changes and we've had changes in our industrial resources also we've gone from an industrial age or we had factories if many of you remember in Birmingham u.s. steel u.s. pipe I know wills family was was part of that wood wood iron and coke we our fuel was steam and electricity they didn't have anything called solar power wind power we were just starting into the nuclear age things have changed in a strong back and wrote skills back in that it's kind of interesting that back in 1968 the life expectancy was 66 years today in 2018 our life expectancy is 75 years so we we've gained nine years over that period but and I would argue that some of it is because the strong back and the rote skills are not as necessary today as they were in the early and then we're into an Information Age we look at the Information Age of 1980s onward our offices have greater productivity electricity and our computers and connectivity now how many remember your first computer here many of you will remember 1982 I borrowed $5,000 from the bank to buy an Eagle PC and an eagle PC had a payroll module on it and I was in the restaurant business at the time and we paid every every Wednesday we paid on Thursday every and I had to do the payroll every Wednesday and it was a weekly tough thing and you have to write down everybody's name it had 50 employees write down everybody's name put down their wages put down the their hours figure out their Sui fi if I see you figure figure state taxes and their federal taxes and then you had to equal it out on the end and then you had to run your columns all the way down 50 numbers you had to run them down and then you had to run them across to make sure that they equaled out and I was always two cents short somewhere so I went and did what a good manager would more normally do I went to my salary and I moved it by two cents and when I move it by two cents that equaled out but the funny thing was that took me four hours what's that Eagle PC came in we got it set up it was a 20-minute process to run your payroll Wow I thought I was on top of the world 1988 I ran for mayor and I got elected to go back to the private sector and when I ran for mayor in Huntsville in 1988 we had a OBM Selectric typewriter and I got one that had memory on it and I thought man I'm at cutting edge right here we wanted to write people letters and be able to put their name at the top of it not just say dear dear dear remember dear friend dear to this we want to put their name and foot there personalize it and so we do that then we get a button to go to litter and it was shoot out a letter that was personalized and look at what we do now we do that in 20 minutes to 10,000 letters things are changing our past is the 1980s to the 1940s and we had an economy that was that was stuck on lots of other things today 1841 today we've had change and I hadn't told you anything that you didn't already know but I wanted to emphasize to you that we've had change and changes the thing that we all have to recognize and we all have to stay ahead of because change is what takes us into the president our economy today our economy and hustla day is a economy focused on aerospace aerospace defense IT biotech and advanced manufacturing that's change changes us from the days when we were the water crest capital of the world jobs provided by redstone our research parking HudsonAlpha Redstone Arsenal is changing back when I first became mayor we had 32,000 people working on Redstone Arsenal today we have 43,000 people working on Redstone Arsenal when I was first mayor I think we had six general officers out there we now have 16 general officers we had 26 SES as we have now have 96 SES as senior executives who are working at the Arsenal things are changing Cummings Research Park when I first came in as mayor we had about 22,000 people working there we now have 30,000 people working at Cummings Research Park HudsonAlpha just came in I was edited it had een open for a year when I came in as mayor and they were mapping the human genome well they've gone beyond mapping the human genome and today they are taking that human genome they've mapped and they're taking it to a medical team and saying what does it mean when you have your X or Y chromosome cranked right here it says well you have a propensity for heart disease well let's start treating you now for it let's be proactive our treatment rather than reactive things are changing we have the world's first genomic medical clinic in Huntsville Alabama and things are changing diversification has been driven by commercial space advanced manufacturing biotech and cyber we were just talking about cyber 10 years ago cyber wouldn't even an industry and that's what 2sm DC conference and we listened to general house Kortright who is a joint chief of staff soon he mentioned cyber about 10 times and I said hmm we might want to look and see what this cyber thing is today it's a multi-billion dollar industry and it gets down to what is acceptable risk I could spend my whole budget on cyber in the city of Huntsville and next year I'd have to spend the whole budget again because threats change and I have to figure out what is the acceptable risk and so now there's an even in industry where somebody comes in they value your risk what a change things are checked in things are changing a lot from 1941 to today when we start looking at all that we can always say in in I tell our people we're good for the next 5-10 years in Huntsville we have pretty much set ourselves up that we're going to be a success for the next 5-10 years but what happens in 15 years 20 years 25 years 30 years from now what happens in the future what are we going to set ourselves up for in the future so that we can be the same success tomorrow that we are today things that set up our future growth rose i-65 i 10 i v 65i 59 i 20 if we don't have an infrastructure that can can uphold ourselves our state can't continue to grow it if our state can't continue to grow some of that may even be in South Alabama but that still affects us how many of us have been down i-65 lately and got caught up just because it got over capacity I have bunch and when we were running for governor I was up and down there all the time and I tell you what I'm glad to be here down out in that car but I will tell you something you know if we don't the infrastructure we can't we can't continue to grow Mobile is dredging the port right now and they're dredging the port so they can take bigger containerized containerized loads off of offer bigger ships every one of those containers is going to go on an 18-wheeler it's going to come straight up by 65 Mobile has just opened to distribution centers Amazon distribution center and Walmart distribution center for foreign sales both of those distribution centers are going to be running the trucks 18 wheelers straight either on a high 10 or straight up by 65 and so if we think we have congestion today look at what we have tomorrow if we don't start today we end up imploding on ourselves because we outgrow our infrastructure our personal roads our internal roads we don't have an internal road system that can get our 65,000 people from Huntsville over to here to be able to work get them back again we implode on ourselves that's part of the future that's part of setting up for the future that's the infrastructure that we got to set up the Internet we were just talking earlier about the internet you know when we start talking about fiber-to-the-home that is something that produces a shadow economy for every community that it happens to we committed to fiber-to-the-home two years ago we're about a year a year away from completing that and when we get finished what it does it gives you a shadow economy we have three people right now who are working for Disney World in Orlando and they work as a team they put together their projects they send it down they look at it in Orlando they ship it back to them they work on it ship it back but at the end of every month they get a check from Disney World in Orlando and that check is spent in Huntsville Alabama becomes part of our economy I have another man that I ran across and he said I work for the city of San Francisco and traffic engineering I said you do you're a little bit far from San Francisco he said well no no I do cat cam drawings I send them out they'd mark them up I send them back on Duke to him and said they send me a check every month and that check is spent in Huntsville Alabama it gives you a shadow economy in that fiber-to-the-home is part of your infrastructure that every community needs to be working on right now because it gives you capabilities that we have to have in the future and then we've got to attractive workforce workforce development is one of the most important things that any of us are going to be doing if you can't attract a workforce you cannot keep up with what you've got to do that's that's the word that I hear from industry day in and day out I'm looking for a qualified workforce I'm looking for an workforce that is trained I'm looking for the workforce of the new young Millennials who are coming out now I'm a double millennial so I don't I don't I don't know as much as young Millennials but Harrison back there he's our token millennial office raise your hand Harrison there you go okay and and when we have questions we say Harrison tell us what what the Millennials think Millennials are thinking he'll tell us right off and everything and it's a great thing to know but the Millennials are looking for a place to come and they're looking for cool places now I've never been known as a cool place myself we had a we did the downtown study one time in our downtown group came back or study came back and didn't after action y'all have a very active night nightlife on Thursday through Saturday from 10:30 to 2:00 in the morning and I said really and I said I don't think I've ever been up past 10:30 but uh but but they are looking for a place that they can come and they think is acceptable and that has a good good reputation in a place that they can be part of and that's what we're going to have to do we have to make sure that we have the urban in fields we have to make sure that we have the the set up so that we can have it's amazing to me craft beer attracts you millenials for some reason quite attract some other people too but the idea of art centers and things like that those are the things that attract the new millennial staff coming in and we've got to attract them so what's our opportunities there there we go opportunities in the future and you know when we start talking about opportunities we've got to be looking out that 15 20 years from now 10 years 15 20 years where are we gonna go and what we're going to do in our area we see HudsonAlpha is a leader in genomic sequencing but we also see partnerships in the medical field partnerships in the medical field there's a 965 medical quarter that goes from mobile at USA goes to Birmingham with UAB comes to Huntsville when we start talking about HudsonAlpha goes to Nashville which is a which is a predominantly a medical field has a huge medical field there goes all the way up to Louisville if we can collaborate with others and as we collaborate with others we find that we can we can continue to grow and out of some of that a lot of that is data analytics that will be coming out of HudsonAlpha because they have big data huge data coming out about your human genome and how do we do the analytics on it to be able to tell this is what makes a difference in your life and what how you grow that's going to be important to us we're building off of her strengths and I think one of the things we all have to realize we build from what is successful we take providers successful and grow from it Mazda Toyota Mazda Toyota is going to be setting up starting produce cars in 2021 they will have 4,000 employees and they won't be 4000 Toyota employees and most employees there will be Mazda Toyota employees in that car plant will be producing 750 thousand cars a year and as they start doing that we start looking to what how can we grow off of that half will grow with tier 1 and tier 2 automotive plants Birmingham just had kim tech coming in 1100 workers and it's a tier 1 automotive plant y'all had over in this area who was it Lee you were telling me about TNS TNS technology and and Bo s just had a second tier automotive coming in Pell City has had a second tier automotive come in as we look across the board the second tier automotives bring in 1100 500 employees each one of them Jasper just had a recent had to to plants locate there and as we start bringing those in you wonder what's the shelf life off of having a plant come in and how long do do we keep having suppliers set up around them well in in in Indiana when Toyota came in 20 years later they're still having first and second to your automotives coming in opportunity that's our opportunity in the future and to do that they bring in worker workers from they bring in a workforce 40 $50,000 a year workforce a good economy and adds to your economy other things how can the husband with cyber cyber hustle on the cyber work we're doing how do we tagged along with Maxwell Air Force Base which is a cyber center for which is a cyber center for the air sport air force how do we make sure that we can train the experts in cyber security and how do we tie in with Auburn and a us in us a University of South Alabama and Tuscaloosa and UAH and make sure that we have those people coming out and then how do we tie it to our two-year colleges because 60% of these cyber workers don't have to have a four-year degree they have to have certifications and if we take them and put them into those fields we end up with a workforce that will be into the future in the last years and years and years for us you know as we watch this we've got to take what we're doing today Mazda Toyota is an example we're not put we're not making cars there we're assembling cars there but if we get the plants that are making the actual parts that come into the assembly and we get those to locate in Alabama then we're going to be way ahead you look at mobile they've got Airbus and they've got an it soon to have Bombardier they have hostile and they're not making they're not making ships there they're not making airplanes there but they're assembling airplanes they're assembling ships and if we take the pieces that they're doing and add to that and do the manufacturing then we've set ourselves up for an industry that will be here twenty-five and fifty years from now right now in mobile Airbus is sibling airplanes for thirty percent less and they can do it in the European Union now that's so bad that they can't they tell the managers of Airbus from mobile when they go to the European Union don't don't be mentioned that a whole lot but that's got to be something that comes home and has a telling tell about what we can do in America versus what's being done in the European Union and if we can start instead of putting together a fuselage in two wings and a nose piece in our tail piece and we can start producing those tail pieces in those wings and those fuselage is here then we add to the economy of Alabama we add to the workforce of Alabama and quite frankly we saved 30 percent on labor cost that is something we've got to look for and we've got to look for in the future you know as we look and we try to future-proof Alabama how do we make sure that we future-proof ourselves we've got to look at buzzwords and they're buds buzzwords for the future advanced manufacturing advanced manufacturing is going to be key to all of us because we got to continue to have that base of advanced manufacturing we've had some great success in our area Polaris GE aviation Mazda Toyota in Aerojet Rocketdyne their rocket shop those who are advanced manufacturing that helps add to your economy and yet everybody's not going to be the rocket scientist so you've got to have advanced manufacturing additive manufacturing and I said it wasn't at it to manufacture I did what mayor's do and let you might do this sometimes when they get over your head and they start doing something you look like you've eaten some persimmons and you look at them very seriously and you nod and they think you know what you're talking about I said additive manufacturing and they said no 3d printing don't get too excited about its 3d printing but that's something that a buzzword of the future something we're gonna have to use BW xt is using additive manufacturing or 3d printing to make parts for nuclear plants right now and they don't have to go through the testing and they can get it to market much quicker other words that came out of the latest SMD C conference hypersonic directed-energy cyber blockchain the blockchain technology is something that is going to be huge for all of us whether it's in the medical realm or whether it's a City time together all its information having one person with the key and having the key to how to unlock that information artificial intelligence autum autonomous driving we've already talked a little bit about autonomous driving but what have we set up a platform and we're talking about setting up a platform for autonomous driving in research parks so that we can do the testing of it and work with our friends from Toyota Mazda and some of the other places so that we can put the testbed together and provide for an industry that does exactly what we do censoring GIS gyah mapping how do we do that and make sure that we take that industry and take it into the future data centers small modular reactors for nuclear how do we take those and use those in each city in each city and someday ends up and years from now so each city will end up with a whole modular reactor that will power that city and you'll be rid of the grid that is something that's part of the future and part of the things we've got to look at so how do we do it how do we make sure that we future number one we've got to have infrastructure and we talked about that we've got to have a next generation of companies that create wealth and state local that's very important to us the companies that do well in our area we want to stay in our area we want them to provide jobs for a long time we want them to headquarter in our area we want them to be part of our area that is that's key to us quality of life quality of life is what's going to attract our workforce and everybody here knows that workforce is a key to being able to grow three point nine percent unemployment three percent is transition right so you got 0.9 percent that you can pick from for your labor force right now that's going to be key quality of life will attract the workers that we need to have and finally talent developing our own in recruiting it or recruiting it from elsewhere part of the things that we do to develop our own is we have about 15 groups and for the work on that that our entrepreneur groups and everything one opens urban engine and urban engines mission is to propel the growth of Alabama's economy by connecting aspiring entrepreneurs and establishing business leaders to educational resources talent and community in 2017 they facilitated 81 community events serving over 6,000 individuals one of their one of their events that they do is co-working night co-working night SP young people coming in there are a few old people so I was sprinkled in but usually they're 23 25 years old and they come in a weekly event in the startup community which they do six to ten educational workshops and are offered a platform for peer to peer learning and connections of collaboration they're doing coding they're putting together apps where they're advancing themselves and their careers through self motivation and at the end of that night they might have a beer so one of those things is that we've got to provide community entrepreneurship groups that help our talent develop itself and as we help our talent develop ourselves and recruit from elsewhere we have what we need for the future you know as we've grown over the last 10 years we've had 5,000 jobs added to the city of hustle and 25,000 jobs we've had a out four billion dollars worth of investment but on the same same token we look at Russell Russell is a town of 11,000 they've had 800 jobs at it and we look here at Gunter's when I was talking to Lee Lee dollar about this your town of 8,000 and you had over a thousand added in just one announcement one one job announcement added you know rising tide floats on ships is our tide Rises we all rise is your tide rises as you as you improve we all improve and we're all in this thing together we're all part of the North Alabama economy we're all part of the North Alabama in this North Alabama economy we can be blessed that we're sitting right here because we have opportunity to do great great things and I think that we have the opportunity for the next five years for the next ten years I think we're probably taken care of because we've all done our homework and we've done our infrastructure but we've got to work on the things that have got have to be in place in ten years so that we can be a success 15 20 25 30 years from now we've got to look to the future and we know that future involves change change is your only constant keep up with that change keep ahead of that change and we'll all be a will all be a You're not going to be able to create a document or something on your own that you can give to an individual. You can't just open and copy over and then give it to somebody else. You still have to do the work of the document being created in the first place and the work of the document being delivered in a secure manner."
