in today's video we will answer a common question from persons who have been charged with a crime and that is what is a polygraph examination the answer to that question is coming up right after this welcome back to kiss titus law if you're new here take a status law I'm Steve Gus Titus and this is my channel I post weekly videos just like this one to help you learn how to manage encounters that you may have with the police how to effectively navigate the criminal justice system and had to defend criminal charges if you liked today's video consider giving it a thumbs up and also consider subscribing to my channel it's easy to do that just click on that capital black and white key down in the lower right hand corner of the video screen to subscribe I also enjoy responding to questions and comments so add those down in the comment section below so we can begin a discussion many of my clients have asked me about polygraph examinations otherwise known as lie-detector tests and whether those tests can possibly help them defend their criminal charges well in today's video we will begin a new series here at custodies law to answer those questions to begin this new series today's video will simply discuss what a polygraph examination is a polygraph is the device that measures several physiological indicators such as blood pressure respiration heart rate and skin conductivity while a person is answering a series of questions the theory underpinning the use of the polygraph is the belief that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses that can be distinguished from responses associated with non deceptive answers polygraph examinations have been used as a tool for interrogation with criminal suspects and have been used to evaluate candidates for sensitive public and private employment positions like police officers and private security the testing procedure usually involves a pre test interview that is used by the polygraph examiner to get some preliminary information from the person being tested to help the examiner to develop what are called diagnostic questions during the actual test some of the questions will be irrelevant for example is your name Steve other questions are diagnostic and then finally the relevant questions and those are the ones that the polygraph examiner is really interested in the effectiveness of polygraph examinations has been debated in the scientific community proponents of polygraph exams claim they can be up to 90 percent effective those who criticize polygraph examinations claim that there is no reliable way to measure human emotions but regardless of the pros and the cons of the polygraph examination polygraphs continue to be a tool used by police to induce confessions and used by employers to screen applicants the next videos in this series will answer the following two questions number one how could a polygraph examination possibly help you defend your criminal case number two should you ever submit to a polygraph examination administered by the police or prosecutor's office so stay tuned for those next two videos in this series and don't forget if you have any questions don't forget to add those down in the comment section below and I will respond to those as quickly as I can thanks for watching here at status law
