How to eSign a document: digital signature legitimateness for Physical Exam Consent in Australia

New South Wales education standards Authority are redesigning how consent is taught in schools as part of a once in a generation curriculum review students will learn about power imbalances consent and online image sharing as part of the proposed sex education syllabus joining us live with more is sexual consent activist Chanel Kontos Michelle really appreciate your time thank you is this a sort of change you've been lobbying for What specifically would you like to see students being taught that you think they're missing out on at the moment I think what I hope for students to be taught at not just in New South Wales but at a national level is more comprehensive holistic consent education starting from an early age so when I say holistic I mean talking about these things such as power imbalances talking about how age and money and gender can create imbalances in the way that these sort of conversations are negotiated and when I say early I'm not proposing that we talk explicitly about sex especially teachers talking explicitly about sex to you know people in primary school but I'm saying we start teaching concepts of consent which is exactly what this syllabus proposes you know asking asking permission seeking permission denying permission and accepting responses most importantly can be done in a magnitude of ways from a young age you can do that with sharing toys you can do that with braiding someone's hair holding someone's hand the earlier we start normalizing these sort of conversations and teaching young people how to use these skills the easier it will be when we do start having these conversations in a sexual way as they get older and it is appropriate yeah and the age issue is is something that can be controversial isn't it in terms of how young is too young to introduce all of these topics that that can be wide-ranging what would you say to critics who say well these are just little children we're talking about they've got their whole lives to Grapple with adult themes let them be kids let them be innocent for as long as possible I mean I wish we could just let kids be kids and that I wish these things were not relevant to them but the rates of child sexual abuse in our community mean that it is very important to teach young people how to seek help you know how to give consent to good night deny consent understand what behaviors are inappropriate from a young age in an appropriate way I also think we need to have the confronting conversation that currently the vast majority of sex education for young people in Australia is ography which more often than not is violent and degrading towards women and it's very much a pillar that upholds this culture of sexual assault or non-consent so whilst I wish that children could you know be free of all that content for as long as possible that's not the reality therefore we need to equip them with the skills to know that they need to seek help from responsible adults when they are in danger or when something does go wrong or so that we can counteract that very dictating force that they're consuming so often yeah that's a good point about ography because we've seen study after study suggesting that children are coming across ography at much earlier ages and I guess that's where a generation shift comes into do you think parents need to educate themselves about more of these issues so that the message kids are getting at home is aligned with what they're hearing at school because I guess it is important to acknowledge that between the generations a lot of the standards really have shift in terms of what is accepted 100 I mean the way that ography was accessed 30 years ago was completely different it was Top Shelf magazines those sort of ideas now the most common way that young people access ography is usually by accident because it's often you know targeted them on the internet if they're streaming a movie illegally or you know on a Gaming website which so many young people are often and if we don't have these open conversations at home they'll create a area of Shame around it meaning that again the child is unable to seek help for the content that they may have accidentally consumed and it also means that you know they may be curious and go and seek more of it but yeah the average age that students access ography in Australia these days is as young as 12 years old so these conversations need to be happening before that occurs and it is so important that I mean the curriculum is incredible and I'm a large advocate for consent education in the school system because of the importance of standardizing the way that this is taught to ensure that not just one person is learning but learning it but all of their peers are learning it and that means it's contributing to a culture among a new generation however it is definitely parents responsibility to ensure they are educating themselves stepping up learning what's going on with you know Trends in technology image based abuse is an except exponentially growing issue amongst young people and the shame and the misinformation around it means that we're leaving them very vulnerable Chanel contest really appreciate you joining us to explain how some of those changes might be useful for children in New South Wales and as you say there's a way to go in terms of other states and territories adopting the same sort of thing appreciate your time thanks so much thank you so much
