This determination process by the Department of Education is a yearly process. So, each year you need to check. I talked about the goals and the scope of the Awards for Faculty program. But before we go too much further, I wanted to give you a little bit more context about how NEH defines the humanities. Our definition begins with the agency’s founding legislation. The NEH was created by Congress in 1965, along with NEA. The humanities fields on this slide come from the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities. 00:11:49.390 --> 00:12:19.660 Macklem, Mary Act of 1965. It reads as follows, so it mentions a range of humanities fields, including those listed: “The term humanities includes, but is not limited to, the study of the following language. So we go from this definition. It's a very capacious we have a very capacious understanding of the humanities, and if you have questions whether your project falls within the humanities, by all means feel free to reach out to us. As I mentioned on the beginning slides, a key feature of this program is flexibility in both project types and work plans. One example might be research and writing of an exhibition catalog for an art or historical exhibit on campus. The first is authored by Kristina Richardson, previously of Queens College, CUNY, and Professor Richardson received 12 months of full time support for the project. 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:38.170 Macklem, Mary She researched and wrote a book about Roma language and culture in the pre modern Middle East. 00:17:39.200 --> 00:17:55.030 Macklem, Mary The second project is an anthropological study of two Brazilian indigenous leaders, whose lives spanned the 20th century, and large scale state projects in Amazonia. 00:17:55.940 --> 00:18:02.980 Macklem, Mary And the recipient, Suzanne Oakdale, is a professor at University of New Mexico; she received seven months of full-time support. 00:18:03.710 --> 00:18:21.710 Macklem, Mary And the last project is by Angela Vergara at California State, Los Angeles, and Professor Vergara used the award to complete a book on the history of unemployment in Chile, from the Great Depression through the 1980s. And she received 12 months of full-time support. 00:18:23.030 --> 00:18:52.560 Macklem, Mary Given the flexibility of the project types funded in the program, I have not pictured here but want to just reiterate the possibility of humanities research leading to other types of products, not only book products. As I mentioned, we've supported a number of projects leading to undergraduate course revisions, peer-reviewed articles and projects supporting institutional or community goals. NEH staff will read and respond to draft narrative and work plans, so I want to bring that to your attention. That's coming up on February 8th. These are optional. Staff will provide you with written feedback, and we endeavor to get these back to you, you know, 7 to 10 days before the formal program deadline in April. 00:19:31.910 --> 00:19:36.730 Macklem, Mary As I mentioned, these are optional, but applicants in the past have found them helpful. 00:19:37.520 --> 00:19:52.330 Macklem, Mary If you choose to do that, you should do your best to prepare a narrative and work plan ing to how these are described in the Notice of Funding Opportunity, and you can find full instructions about the drafts in section D4. 00:19:53.450 --> 00:20:22.800 Macklem, Mary The program deadline is April 12th, 2023, so at that deadline you'd need to have everything ready and submit it to the Grants.gov portal. I'll talk more about that in a minute, and your notification this year will be in December. That's when you would learn that you were or were not funded December 2023. You could start as early as January 1st, 2024 and as late as September 1st, 2025. 00:20:29.260 --> 00:20:57.760 Macklem, Mary So here's the slide with the criteria for the program. These criteria appear in section E1 of the Notice of Funding Opportunity, and we advise you to keep these prominently in mind when you're writing your proposal. Everything NEH receives goes to peer reviewers who are external to NEH to read and review, and the peer reviewers use these five criteria and only these. 00:20:59.550 --> 00:21:17.620 Macklem, Mary The first criterion pertains to the intellectual significance of your project for the humanities, and so you should tell your reader about your project, what it's about, and why it's important, how it will change or add to or revise what's understood in your area. 00:21:18.420 --> 00:21:33.250 Macklem, Mary And you should write for a humanities generalist because lots of people will potentially read your materials. Peer reviewers generally find a well written, clear application is a predictor of the quality of the planned publication. But this is what do you propose to do during the award period? You may not know yet which publisher or which journal you are going to go for, but you can still indicate to peer reviewers if you have an idea of where you might look to publish. If you are doing a course revision, there might be other kinds of you know, when will you offer that course next and how will the materials be utilized? 00:23:23.100 --> 00:23:52.910 Macklem, Mary So let's shift into the area about what do you need to prepare in order to apply for this program? And I have taken a screenshot out of the Notice of Funding Opportunity of all of the pieces of an application for this program. And as you'll see from this table, there are four columns. Some of these are grants.gov forms. These are digitally completed in grants.gov. 00:23:53.090 --> 00:24:07.560 Macklem, Mary And some are attachments that you would write, you know, when you're ready to do that, and then you need to save these as a PDF and include it in your application materials. 00:24:08.650 --> 00:24:38.620 Macklem, Mary It tells you how to name your files. It tells you in the designation column if this is a required document or if it's recommended at the time of application, or if it is conditionally required. And I would pay special attention to those aspects because if it is required, you absolutely need to submit that at the time of application. If you do not submit-- for example, your resume, you forget-- 00:24:40.040 --> 00:24:56.170 Macklem, Mary [Your application] will be considered incomplete and it will not go through the review process. So it's very important to see if something is required or if it is not required. So also don't submit things that are not asked for. 00:24:57.050 --> 00:25:16.730 Macklem, Mary Because those are all reasons that your application might be rejected and might not go through review. And then the other column here are page limits. These are also very important to abide by. You'll see the word “mandatory” this year is new. We use the word mandatory--so your narrative can be only three pages. So, those are details that are really important to be aware of. And I just want to also tell you that if you're wondering, what do these things include, the narrative, the work plan and so on. We do have narrative samples up on the program resource page, and I would encourage you to look at those if you find that useful. We did put four new ones up this year. And there are a range of humanities fields for you to look at. 00:25:56.560 --> 00:26:18.310 Macklem, Mary These are actual applications that were funded; some of those were written before the formatting was changed in certain ways. So, you should always go by the Notice of Funding Opportunity currently available when preparing your application. But just hope that it will be helpful to you to see some samples of what other people have done. 00:26:20.710 --> 00:26:45.880 Macklem, Mary I’m going to take just a few minutes to talk specifically about a few of the required attachments. Not all of them, in the interest of time, but I wanted to talk a little bit about the narrative today. This is the document which explains your project to reviewers. Your narrative should address four areas, and these are described in the Notice of Funding Opportunity section D. 00:26:46.780 --> 00:27:10.570 Macklem, Mary So, significance and contribution, organization and methods, competencies, skills and access and final product and dissemination. You'll notice that those follow fairly closely the review criteria for the program and there's lots of suggestions or guidance in the Notice of Funding Opportunity about what those 00:27:11.010 --> 00:27:12.880 Macklem, Mary what you should include there. 00:27:14.860 --> 00:27:22.030 Macklem, Mary Another required attachment for this program that I just wanted to mention a little bit more about today is your work plan. 00:27:23.140 --> 00:27:53.250 Macklem, Mary This is a separate attachment. It's attachment 2, and it also is required. This must only be one page. You can present it in any format you choose, whether it's a table, whether it's a listing, whether it's in prose, or some combination, but it should not go beyond a page, so be sure to be careful with your pages and you should indicate on this how many months of support you're requesting 00:27:53.770 --> 00:28:07.200 Macklem, Mary and whether you propose full or part time work, or a combination thereof. So, you can you can toggle between, you know, full time during the academic year, part time during the summer and back to full time, or whatever works with your schedule. 00:28:08.330 --> 00:28:21.580 Macklem, Mary The only thing to draw your attention to about that is the work plan must be continuous, so you can't work full time for four months and then not work on the NEH project for three months or something, and then go back to the [NEH project]. It's very similar to the table from the Notice of Funding Opportunity, of your attachments for the application. The required attachments are listed there. So, I spoke about the narrative and the work plan. Your resume also is described there. I would look at that. It's a two-page document. This document should confirm that you have institutional support, signed by an institutional representative--so someone in the Office of Sponsored Research, if you have such an office, or a vice president or a Dean, and it should indicate that your institution will allow you to accept 00:29:44.950 --> 00:30:02.780 Macklem, Mary and award if offered, even though it might reduce your teaching load. So, the other thing to mention about this is it's recommended as you can see. So what does that mean? The reviewers use the same review criteria for all projects, so you need to make a very strong case for whatever project you are proposing in those five areas. So the significance to the humanities, and so on. So that's all. And then Mary, we're getting a couple of questions that I think relate to how do I fit as much information into these small documents as I can. We got a question about the bibliography. We got a lot of questions about a two-page resume. Those are great questions, and I know it its difficult. Obviously, you can't cite all of the sources for a project, at least, probably not. But you know, if you have primary and secondary sources listed. If you're doing a film project, you might have films on there, as, you know, I guess your primary sources. I would also say that in your narrative, if you are referring to you know you're providing the context for your project, you're providing the scholarly context for it. If you have a citation there, probably not a full citation, but you don't need to then replicate that citation in the bibliograph, if it's clear from the narrative. We're aware that many faculty resumes or CVS really are much longer than two pages.
