hey y'all Sean in town here with another podcast and you know it's tax season right so I had to had my tax preparer on with us all right she's been doing my taxes for years now I mean years I trust her uh she's she's legit as they come y'all and I had to add her on ask her and it's busy right now and she's taking her wonderful time out to come in her busy schedule uh to pretty much come and bless us with some information so you know I got Jody here with us and um before I I I give her the mic so she could pretty much uh talk about what she does and you know all that good stuff and about her company or wonderful company I just want y'all to know look I appreciate y'all a lot of people have been reaching out to me and and just expressing how grateful they are uh for the information that I've been dropping and um so uh what I wanted to do was I had to to to to to pretty much throw a curveball in there you know other than giving you information on how to get drive and all that good stuff I had to ask her if she could pretty much come on and help you all out and of course we will be giving out some information today and so stay with us to the end uh but you know how I am I like to get right into it but I wanted to pretty much show y'all my appreciation also at the beginning of the year so we got Jody with us Jody what's going on just tell us um a little bit about uh your company and and all that good stuff okay good morning everybody my name is Jody Gibbons I am the CEO of Tip Top taxes I'm located in South Florida however I am able to prepare taxes Nationwide um I can do this virtually over the phone um in person of course if you're located at the South Florida area I have been in the industry about 11 years now um but have had my own company almost six years now so I'm looking forward to working with everybody this year uh to get you on track with your taxes and stay on track with the IRS because nobody wants to IRS knocking on their door so I've been doing some gig work right and a lot of people on my channel you know of course thank you all I'm almost at pretty much 90 000 subscribers at the time I'm making this video and a lot that's awesome congratulations a lot of y'all out there gigging all right and I wanted to pretty much uh ask some questions that you would ask because I also gig I've done gigs and I'm still doing you know gigs uh right now you know myself so I you know there's so many different 1099s that's going to be coming in Jody right right so um let's just say uh somebody or a person uh used to work at a job and they're no longer at that job or you know we're out here you know uh gigging for all these different you know companies whether it's apps or on the websites just they're all companies you know how can we retrieve all of those because there are could you pretty much put all of those from the IRS right so there's multiple ways to go around that of course the first is always going to be to just make sure that even if it's a current or prior employer that they have your current address um that's something that you probably want to start doing in December or right now at the beginning of January because the W-2s 1099s you know all of the tax forms do have to be sent out by the end of January each year and that's actually by IRS requirement so let's say for example that you're not able to do that my second suggestion would be a mail forward or an address change with U.S post um that's another great way to go around it or even reaching out to the company to see if they offer online access because now we have more than ever you know portals and access to online pay stubs and W-2 forms 1099s um of course those portals vary employer deployer I do know a big one is ADP obviously we know they're the largest payroll company in the United States pretty much so they have portals where you can log in and get all of your information um I would have to say outside of all of those the final um straw so to speak would be getting them from the IRS but those aren't going to be posted until pretty much the beginning of May so that would be putting you in a position where you are going to be filing late um just to quickly uh spear off on that a little bit if you file late and you're going to owe the IRS money there will be additional fees and penalties attached to that however if you're filing late and you're going to be due a refund you actually have three years to file without any penalties or interest um so that's something just to keep in mind like I said to try all other avenues so that you can file before the April 15th deadline especially um like you said if you're a gig worker where all of your income is Cash There's been no federal Medicare Social Security tax paid on any of the income as of yet um of course you'll have all your deductions but you you don't know if you're going to end up owing at the end or not so you're going to want to get the documents as soon as possible hey y'all this is crazy because we're we're doing this and uh immediately I have I had a notification coming from Freight there it is y'all came in from Freight I'm gonna show y'all right here well I'm gonna put it up so y'all could see it it came in from Freight you know that there's a a match for me Freight is actually a courier company they pretty much uh send out you know matches but I'm gonna put this on silent now my next question is what if a person that um I mean what is the best filing direction for a person uh who's a gig worker doing you know uh apps like our driving apps like uh spark or uh Postmates you know uh let's just say door Dash Uber Eats right and even doing Rideshare Rideshare also and uh delivering packages you know uh for certain uh companies like this one Freight all right how you know how would that work yeah so of course course all of those companies are going to issue a 1099 that's actually mandatory from IRS since 2020 for anyone that makes over 600 so you're considered a contract worker you're not on W-2 there's no taxes that have been taken out of any of the income that you've made throughout the year so I always suggest to my clients especially if you're going to stay on 1099 and have all of this cash income coming in throughout the year you're going to want to do especially keeping all of your expenses so one of the great things about apps like especially Uber and Lyft they actually keep track of your mileage you're able to see if you had repairs done on your vehicle things of that nature that would be tax deductible I would also suggest if you're working for another gig company that maybe doesn't keep track of those type of things so scrutiny that you actually keep track of them yourself because those are all deductions that you can take at the end of the year and although there is a long list of things that can be tax deductible the main ones of course are going to be mileage repairs on the vehicle fuel um the ride share fees um platform fees those are usually listed within the app as well um the other thing that you're going to definitely want to do is set up estimated payments and those are done quarterly with the IRS um so basically what you're doing is quarter one is January February March we're taking a look at how much we've made so far and we're making an estimated tax payment to the IRS before April the 20th on that particular quarter and then so on and so forth this is just going to alleviate some of the bulk attacks that's owed at the end of the year so just giving a random example let's say we put everything together and it says you have a tax liability of four thousand dollars but then we go in there and we say well we made estimated tax payments every quarter of fifteen hundred dollars we now have an overpayment and a refund due let's say for example we made quarterly payments of five hundred dollars we can add that now we've lowered our tax liability because we've already paid a portion of it and third but also a very large option would be to put yourself on payroll because then you're paying your federal Medicare Social Security taxes you can pay yourself weekly bi-weekly or monthly and at the end of the year you get a W-2 issued from yourself you know um I was I would I wanted to add uh you could keep track of your mileage by using the stride app as well so yes you know that's a great app yes because there are multiple apps that you can use some are free some charge a minimal monthly fee but there's even apps that you can use where you you get in the vehicle you press Start you get to where you're going you press end and it calculates everything including using the map to see where you went and where you were going so Jody I have a question right this is from uh someone in my Facebook group uh shout out to everybody in the Facebook group cash creators Community um so uh for everybody that's looking to get in the group it's pretty much closed right now we're at three thousand we went we grew to 3 000 too fast like a week and two or three days we hit uh three thousand so we closed off the group because we do not have enough moderators we will be reopening the group pretty soon all right as you know I'm trying to get another moderator but someone in the group asked this Jody they ask does anyone know if you have to claim tips on your 1099 um or is it just uh base pay for uh the gig okay so we're not gonna like this answer but tips are taxable income so it's actually if we go back to using those same app examples like ubereats doordash etc etc they will actually already include that because in the breakdown on the app you'll be able to see it separated but when they issue the 1099 itself it will already be included in the income again that's why it's so important to keep track of all of our expenses to lower our tax liability or make those estimated payments or set up payroll for ourselves so that at the end we're not you know dinged in a in a lump sum so to speak we can kind of spread it out that's good now um uh do you work virtually you know can can our viewers uh work with you virtually yes most definitely um so as of right now I am able to take virtual appointments I do apologize however if you live in California or Virginia I would not be able to assist you unfortunately those two states um require further licensing and one of those States requires that you actually be a resident to prepare the state tax uh anywhere else though in the United States I am available I am ready to take the appointment again like you said we can do virtual Zoom we can do everything uh collecting documents uh virtually as well through email and of course some available by phone and in person if you are located at the South Florida area Cali there's something that's there's something going on out in Cali man because a lot of people will reach out to me they're like yo does this work not thing works in Cali and there's some type of law that's that's over I don't know y'all gonna have to check out your own uh state laws but that's kind of weird state tax is very extensive I will say I uh have a colleague that uh is out in California and the state taxes are more complex than the federal I will say that so I understand why they want their uh tax preparers to be licensed and trained and insured you have to be bonded and insured as well to prepare California state tax all right so y'all like I said earlier uh Jody is my tax preparer all right and she's been doing a wonderful job for years now and I'm here sharing I'm here sharing uh you know uh her uh expertise with y'all so uh you know how can uh our viewers uh contact you contact you so much my office line of course 954-226-1326 um if you would like to reach out you know via uh social media I'm on Tick Tock I do a post a couple of times a week I call it tax talk with tip top where I post little videos a couple minutes or less just giving a update or a quick tax tip so The Tick Tock is tax talk with tip top and then of course I have uh Instagram which is Tip Top taxes 954 and Facebook which is Tip Top taxes Inc 954 index and that's t-i-p-t-o-p Tip Top t-i-p-t-o-p Yes actually I don't know if you guys can see this but there they are right there we could see it perfect we could see it and thank you Jody for coming on and uh look you've uh once again I want to thank you for the phenomenal job you've done with my taxes all these over these years and my pleasure appreciate your loyalty every year definitely appreciate uh you having me on the show thank you so much uh you know I'm going to be rocking with you till God says come come home so I appreciate you we out y'all see y'all in the next video and we're gonna try to get her back on all right so stay tuned [Music]
