hey YouTube how you doing uh my name is Victor Sanchez if you haven't been to my channel I normally talk about my construction um right here that I've been doing here in Mexico but today I um really want to talk about a topic that's really hot on the list uh that's basically gentrification um why did I choose this place for gentrification well about 40 years ago I used to live here and uh this used to be dirt roads everything that you see here dirt roads and matter of fact like right in this section right here there used to be big pots of dirt um and you couldn't even go through it basically not even with the car because the heel was so deep you had to go around so and this over here this back side was also just like dirt so let me turn the camera around a little bit and show you guys so when I chose I guess this point to show you guys the impact of gentrification and where it's not a lot of people focus on what richer people I wouldn't say American or Mexican impact is in the country well you can see like in this one this city here 40 years as far as the housing hasn't changed a lot and because of this they don't have a lot of services that in places with greater income are benefited see that location way over there that place is over there my grandmother lived over there for my mom's side somewhere over there it's hard to see from here that place hasn't changed at all Harley so way over there in the distance you can see all the smog all that smog it's because there's very little resources to take care of the trash and pollution and stuff like that it should right there at the distance way over there is one of the richest neighborhoods that one and now we're way over there some of the richest neighborhoods they still would deal with all the smog but it's nicer over them that side you have people with a lot more income mostly Mexicans not Americans this place right here is called um really known for for where Vicente Fernandez was born so really close to where he used to live and we're only like on the bus maybe 20 minute drive on the bus to downtown Guadalajara and really nothing has been impacted here because well people with money just don't simply want to live over here there's nothing to see uh so in this place nobody has been displaced but I'm gonna continue this conversation in two places one in the United States and then the next one in one of the most known expat places in Mexico when my girls were really young um my older ones like about 30 years ago this park right here it used to be uh a pristine Park used to be so nice um we would go we would bring like we would walk on that bridge right there with my girls and um the whole entire area in the back used to be just green really nice um there used to be like a bunch of like plants and there's stuff to kind of get damaged with that but now what you see like uh I'm not gonna go over there but when you go through the fence over there so the whole entire area is fenced now because um there was homeless living on that side and then uh on the front side over here there was also just a bunch of homeless so the the effect of the opposite to gentrification you can see it here in San Bernardino when I used to come here three years ago it used to be like a growing population in a beautiful Park so um it's kind of sad like the opposite direction of where on things to go but this wouldn't happen as we continue just to talk about the real issue about gentrification well welcome to my neighborhood here in California I wanted to bring you guys here because everything that you guys see right here all of this um years ago when I moved in here I think I'm going on my 17th year nothing none of this was here so like this trail that I'm on um it was just Fields there was nothing nothing um and with time now the 16 years passed now there's homes and homes and rows of homes like it's a ton of homes and uh I remember like talking to locals when when I first moved here like 16 17 years ago and the locals obviously there's not like Mexican locals or Caucasian white people and um they didn't want more people here they weren't saying they know Mexicans okay so I want to clear that up but they didn't want more people here they didn't want the growth they didn't want anything they wanted the peace and quiet that I had and obviously that involves lower rents and just more like Hometown feel and and you know unavoidable and available whatever how you say that it's just that you can't avoid growth in this city here it's actually trying to slow growth down but it's it's almost impossible when um I first came here to this neighborhood which is really beautiful I'm gonna keep walking over here the medium price home was about 250 000 it's a lot of money and um and that was on the high side and I was one of the fortunate ones I'm being sarcastic behind the higher side of all things because it was at the top of the market so I I got a really bad deal but um now like the average price of homes here there's about five hundred thousand dollars so most of the homes that you see here like around me it'll be weird or strange to even find a home here that is even close um maybe 450 000 um but more like the 500 000 500 000 these homes when they first built them um they weren't 500 000. but um I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm even priced out if if I were to try to move into this neighborhood now uh at this point when everything has been done and everything's just new there is no way that I could afford to live here a payment for a 500 000 home um it's insane I think it would be like three thousand dollars a month you know now there wasn't no stores here um there was the Stater Brothers I think there was Vons there was one like store complex but we didn't have nothing now we have Panera and we have in and out and and uh Chick-fil-A and just stores that come up and have raised prices here a lot of these homes are like 700 800 000 um so it's hard for somebody that like uh my nephews that are barely starting off it's super difficult for them to find the house here to rent or to buy um you used to be able to find a house here for rent thousand dollars a thousand two hundred dollars right now like any of these homes that you want to rent three thousand dollars a month so I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can see the the gentrification happening everywhere now I guess the argument is that well it's not the poor being moved out but in fact like in this neighborhood it was a poorer neighborhood at one point even before when I got here it was poorer uh poorer and then they started building homes and people started moving in and so then more and more people moved in and now people with better incomes are living here to the point where now these homes are being bought at 500 plus thousand dollars three thousand dollar payments again it's like the people who lived before me can wouldn't be able to afford this and now myself I wouldn't be able to afford but you know one day if the Lord Willows I'll be able to sell my home for a lot greater profit because I'm gonna I'm reaping the benefit of this growth I won't like I wouldn't be with him move here but eventually like I mean I'm trying to say is that there's people that benefit from the growth and one day I'll be able to enjoy the benefit just like many people in Mexico when they sold to um the people they're moving in white or Mexican or Canadian whatever um they benefit at some point of that growth Okay so all right so before all this I want to show you guys how to actually look so let's go over there and then we'll come back so 16 years ago 17 plus 17. um a lot of the area you know what I'm just showing you now like previously it actually looked like this there was um there was a lot of land and it was underdeveloped not exactly like this not completely you still had you had some houses like you see above there um and then but you would see it like a lot of open land and that was just only like 16 years ago so there was nothing here in fact when um my brother and I first went through the neighborhood where I live in much of it looked like like this it was just um orange Fields as far as you can see like the main highway or the main road to like a regional park that we used to go visit look it had nothing but like these oranges here um that you can see so um that's how our neighborhood looked um put like 30 something years ago very pretty but there was nothing like you can see over here like there's nothing just oranges and more oranges and some pretty flowers like this but that's all we had so yeah we had like green Open Fields we had orange like like I showed you right now like 30 years ago there was like orange Fields my brother and I um we used to go to a a recreational park just up the street and uh that was it orange feels and that's how we kind of knew about this we kind of fell in love with that big white mountain that I'm going to show you guys right now um you know they have a lot of snow on that right now but it doesn't have snow like that all the time but I remember seeing that mountain is just beautiful it's one of the biggest mountains here in Southern California and uh remembering like this is a very nice place and so we moved from one place to another and so I was telling my wife I go if I were to ever move it's going to be to that location you know not knowing how things would turn out I just like the location I like the small tone feel and you know many of us thought the same thing so we like the small time feel and then all of a sudden the small town is a Big Town and slowly but surely the people who bought before me you know they sold and they and now probably they're priced out um so okay so let's go back to Mexico and let's see what Jennifer how gentrification affects them and we'll just kind of continue with this video hey everybody okay so we're here in ajijic much warmer over here than in the states to tell you that but kind of nice warm just you can feel the impact in the positive way so ajijic is one of the I would say by far one of the most popular places in Mexico for foreigners to to live in or expats that you may call them um a geek is much more it's much like um I would say even greater impacted than Roma condesa colonial America here in ajijic you have about I need somewhere from 20 to 30 000 fluctuation of foreigners and I say foreigners because this is all walks of life you got Americans uh or from us Canadians Germans um just heard some Italian guys over here talking not to I don't know if you're visiting or live here but anyhow this place has experienced just a really nice benefit of having foreigners here it's so beautiful you can actually see the impact that's the molecone there um the influx of money that foreigners bring here is really has been really nice you see like the place right there hopefully it's not too windy so it's been really positive and uh I actually appreciate that this place is looking really good let me see if I can walk over here and just show you guys um this place right here is a like a steak place that they've been fixing up um I'm going over there I think they're still working on it I'm not gonna go way over there I'm gonna turn here super super nice that's why a lot of expats gravitate to this place if you just walk here and like most mostly people here foreigners there was actually a video out here in that you would hear just a lot of people speaking English and stuff like that hello hello you know most most foreigners here I would say 99 .9 percent are really nice really nice to people friendly and I think some foreigners that weren't nice at one point become nice because they're in Mexico you do get that one percent excuse my language for idiots that don't uh don't learn and they bring their crap over here to Mexico which actually I'm going to make another video of pretty soon all right before we go back um I want to take you guys to the special spot kind of close up the video a little bit and give you sure my thoughts with you guys so stick around and again if you guys like this video give me a thumbs up please so I want to conclude uh this uh video a little bit tighten up some ends this used to be the school where I used to come Elementary School when I was a kid it wasn't blue before I think it used to be Brown that's the elementary school see if I can get a better shot over here it's changed a lot different come over here yeah we'll be able to see it but just some classrooms some classrooms that way and my classroom was the end of that building over there that was my elementary schools really really good memories and bad ones too so I guess I want to conclude um what I believe as gentrification is a good thing from bending I don't really believe gentrification is a bad thing I grew up in this neighborhood [Music] um I think gentrification is part of actually the natural process of improving a location this place hasn't have a lot of growth many many years so if people came here with more income and improve like the schools like the one you just saw because they're bringing more money or the highways of the roads I would think that's actually a plus not a minus I think when people talk about gentrification I don't I don't know where their heart is I don't know where it's coming from in my opinion I just don't think that they live through things enough to appreciate that the gentrification part is the natural process of a growing economy so be really be American Canadian any Mexican wealthy Mexicans um I think it's good for a place to experience a type of gentrification to improve their local communities and the overall economy so honestly what I think is that if God has blessed you with the means [Music] we came from here and worked and if by some reason well God has blessed us with the means to be able to move up or have things that maybe others didn't have um it serves its greater purpose you know um I think the greatest issue that we're talking about gentrification is not gentrification itself it's the classism I think classism is probably the the greatest danger of everything it's it's low moral value to other people where your belongings and your money make you somewhat a better person and I can tell you some of the people here are the nicest people I ever met and that's why I fell in love to Mexico because I lived here for a while so my experience in Mexico was with The Humble people in Mexico and I think that when Americans come they experience that um or Canadians experience that uh but there's always a clash I guess because in in United States Mexicans aren't treated very well so I guess when Americans and Canadians come this way there's that resentment so I would think that for any any Foreigner that comes to Mexico they try their best to erase that memory off of them and treat people with kindness don't don't use them as your servant don't come here only because they can serve you they can serve you food they can do this for you can do that you know take different approaches that would actually people would appreciate you you know be humble if God has bless you with the means to do things be humble about it and but I really believe that fascism only can be corrected [Music] um do your faith in God some of them I think that's the greater issue and that's what we should address not necessarily gentrification but the
