hi welcome to coffee with kelly this week's question comes to us with someone asking if they're entitled to take leave following the death of a family member or friend otherwise known as bereavement leave so colorado law does not specifically provide a right to take bereavement leave however you may be entitled to take leave if one of the following two sets of circumstances apply to you first you may be entitled to leave if you qualify for the family medical leave act if you work at a workplace with at least 50 employees and if you are experiencing a medically diagnosed condition such as depression anxiety or ptsd and your medical provider recommends that you take leave to care for yourself or if you are caring for someone else who is experiencing a medically diagnosed condition and the healthcare provider recommends that you take leave to care for them the other reason you might be able to take bereavement leave is if your employer has leave provided for in your handbook and that is usually called bereavement leave and there's usually uh specific criteria about how many days of leave that you're provided for typically there's a breakdown in whether or not it's an immediate family member you get a certain number of days of leave if it's just a friend or a grandparent it might be a smaller number of days of leave so those are the circumstances under which you might have a right to take leave following a death of a close family member or friend
