today I wanted to get involved with medical legal partnership because the immigration Clinic recently closed its doors and I have an interest in practicing immigration law and we actually do a considerable amount of immigration work here at this clinic and I just had talked to a classmate who had done the clinic and really enjoyed it said that it was some great experience and I had kind of an impression from the name at first that it was maybe more centered around medical legal issues but really there's a broad aspect of Legally she said the clinic covers and so it's been pretty great it's been a it's been a great experience working at the clinic there's a lot of practical skills that we're getting a lot of experience with that you know we wouldn't otherwise get experience with in the classroom whether it's filing motions or competitions drafting memos things like that yeah I think it's been great to get to work with clients and get to kind of get a lot of ownership in this clinic so that there's the clinic director oversees everything but you get a lot of ownership with clients with how things are done and the routes you take and you get a lot of help along the way but if you're really going to feel like they're your clients in your cases it's pretty broad really anything that a patient comes into the hospital with it's a low income patient it has a legal issue that is either directly or indirectly affecting their health will help them out with that but there's a case where we've done where a woman had a clinical depression diagnosis and part of what was contributing to that was the fact that she hadn't seen her kids in four years and so we were able to help get her custody and as a result I mean we recently talked to her psychologist and I you know I think she seems to think that her client's mood is improve I'd wholeheartedly recommend this Clinic I know that I think there are like maybe five of five clinics like this across the country like that are affiliated with universities so it's definitely a unique experience that you can't really get anywhere else yeah I think if you're someone who's interested in um if it looks working with low-income individuals or it's immigration or housing issues or end-of-life planning or there's a lot of different topics but any of those areas this would be a great clinic to get involved in
