product manager cover letter this is a pairing to the product manager resume that we've just recently reviewed and we're going to go over this letter now let's get into it let's start at the top here again just like in the resume we don't need these labels so we want the name we might even move the name to the left it could be the right as long as it's prominent we might make this a bit larger and we'll have our location so a city and state or city and country and then a phone number that's good to reach out and an email address you don't need the labels get rid of those and then we've got a spot here for the company name and their address that's great we want to make sure that these dates are not wrapping and in fact i would move this state would actually go to the very top so you can see the date would look something like this we'd have at the top could be in the header as long as it's at the top we want to have it in the middle [Music] just just per standard we'd also get rid of this title we don't need this title statement and just open with dear alien look at that this candidate has found the name of the recruiter or hiring manager that's responsible for this job let's put their name here that's brownie points right there way to go that's awesome okay moving on to the body we want to generally create four to five strong paragraphs so i have an introduction and a conclusion that wraps two to three examples of your accomplishments and past roles or academia for academia examples we don't necessarily need to say they were for university or certification what we need to focus on is the work that was done what we accomplished and work to show that you can do the same thing and more for this new company we have currently are a couple of sentences and then three paragraphs but really this is more like three paragraphs i'll do a little editing and show you what i mean so as you can see really we only have three paragraphs we have an introduction that used to be in a sentence and a paragraph and a conclusion that used to be in a paragraph in a sentence and we want to avoid just one sentence this is a cover letter it's not social media so write four to five sentence paragraphs the introduction is challenging for many applicants what you want to do is just like in the resume you're going to create a very strong personal brand at the very start so get rid of the negative keywords like i would like to or i am hoping or i am aspiring or i am seeking you don't need a state that you're applying for the job this is self-evident because you are literally applying for the job so we can get rid of a lot of this statement here and we would just start with i'm a product manager that would be much stronger than saying hey i want to apply to this job because they already know by virtue of your application and then the candidate goes on to name the 12 years of experience and relevant areas that's awesome you want to start building this case for why you're the perfect candidate for this job recruiters and hiring managers are looking for people who can solve their pain they have pain that's why they're looking to hire someone they're going to spend so much money to hire someone they're going to spend so much money for the hiring process itself to go on that kind of a journey there needs to be some kind of a pain that the company needs fixed you want in this cover letter to show that hiring manager that you can solve their pain open the next paragraph the second paragraph starts to show examples of your work and arcana does a pretty good job of that there are a few grammatical errors or actually punctuation errors like we want to solve please resolve these wide open spaces in the midst of this cover letter here is a few of these and also always be sending pdf versions of your cover letter and your resume never send a word version or any other version pdf is the way to send job application materials focus on what you've accomplished this is a lot of attributes a lot of these skills are actually in the skills section in our resume is what we want to do is show these things in action the cover letter is your opportunity to tell a story that you're not able to fit in the resume and then let's show two more examples on top of this the conclusion will wrap up a summary and we'll encourage the recruiter to call you we're going to create a strong call to action which encourages the hiring manager to call our email to discuss the opportunity and that's the goal these documents they have one job to do and that is to get you an interview get a phone call so you can get in front of the hiring manager and prove your case okay so overall good start cover letters often take several drafts three is a minimum probably more like five or six drafts to get them right so just iterate what i like to do is write a cover letter as fast as possible get the first draft done even though it's sometimes very painful and difficult give my self a 20 to 30 minute break and then get back on that second draft and rinse and repeat give myself another 20 minute break and then come back to it give it a third draft and
