today we are going to be talking about how you can start get started as a new makeup artist and build your clientele all right so we gonna jump right into this video [Music] your girl elena j here if you're new here welcome if you're returning thank you for you know coming back but today we are going oh wait hold on pause if you're new here and you don't know who i am i am elena j i am a makeup artist and esthetician i've been a makeup artist for nine years and the esthetician for four years so i am pretty experienced in this industry you're going to see me keep looking down on my phone because i got my notes ready because we dropping jen's today all right so just get on social media period you want to make sure you're on social media because you need a way to advertise yourself and get your work out there now once you have your social media presence what is very important is consistency you want to make sure that you're posting content consistently you want to be creating content consistently so i know when you first start out as a makeup artist you don't really have much people to work on that's completely fine what you want to do is either do your own makeup and post yourself when you first get started and you know starting on yourself and practicing on yourself is honestly one of the best ways to become more confident and comfortable in your artistry the second thing i recommend doing is getting models models are the best way to put your work out there because as a makeup artist people don't always want to see you know you doing your own makeup yes that's nice to see you do your makeup but they want to see how you do other people's makeup because that's how they're going to build their trust to know all right yeah i want to book with her you can just advertise um looking for models free makeup people love free once you get here free you're going to get people rushing in so advertise that you're looking for models on social media and boom you'll get people in the door when creating this content you want to make sure your content is of quality quantity without quality is nothing so when taking your photos make sure that you're using good lighting and you want to always have a clean background don't have your house your messy crib in the background the fridge the kids running around people in the background all that stuff that is not that's very tacky it's not cute people are not going to be wanting to come to you as a makeup artist if your presentation is not there so it's very important especially as a new artist you want to make sure that you're presenting yourself with quality so when creating this content use like a flat white background or whatever color backdrop as long as it's simple and clean that's perfect if you want to create like a little section where you have like a grass wall or something you just want to keep consistency and you want the background to be very quality quality okay even if you have a background where it is your house if your house is like nice and you know decor is popping that's fine as well because that's aesthetically pleasing background have a niche when you first start out as a makeup artist figuring out your niche is it could be a little stressful so don't take it too seriously because you'll figure it out as you as you go on and as you build more experience you'll figure out what you like the style of makeup that you like the styles you don't type of brow styles you like the type of skin you like the aesthetic that you're going for but that's going to come with consistency and practice so that's why it's very important to be consistently working on yourself and your craft once you figure out what your niche is now you could dive in and really perfect your craft in that area and the importance of finding a niche is when someone knows you let's say you specialize in editorial makeup they gonna know all right i'm gonna go to such and such because when it comes to editorial she got it in in my city i know such and such when people are gonna refer people for editorial looks they're gonna go to you it's like a signature thing about your makeup style so if you want to be known for luscious skin you want to be known for having that expensive skin me personally i love expensive looking skin like i like my clients skin to look like skin and the way my my work photographs is very important to me so i literally did not figure out my niche until a while into my artistry but that's what i'm saying as a new artist figure out try to figure out your niche as soon as possible your niche could change so when you first start in the first year you might be into that full land of instagram brows you know the ombre thick heavy looking brows and then you might find later on as you become more experienced in the industry you might start to soften up you might like more of a natural look a natural brow a feathered fluffy brow so don't be too hard on yourself on figuring out your niche just know what you like and stick to that don't try to be like everyone else be you always be you don't watch what the next person is doing do what you like and carry yourself respectfully you want to present yourself as such like you don't want to be ratchet out in these streets you don't want to be in social media drama and all this other stuff present yourself in a way where you would attract the type of clientele that you're looking for if you want to attract those ratchet people who won't book you and not show up and do those other stuff then carry yourself ratchet but if you want to resp if you want to attract respectful people who's going to respect you as a business owner and value you and what you have to offer carry yourself as such okay so very important carry yourself presentably because you are your brand and you represent your business collaborations collaborating is like one of the best and fastest ways to get yourself out there you can collaborate with other photographers models like people who are like aspiring models because that way they have experience and they're going to take it serious like when they for your photos they're gonna be you know serving that face to make sure your photos is on point and they're also going to re-share the content working with photographers is also a way that build your portfolio i should say that's a perfect way to build your portfolio because one you have professional photos two you have an experienced model or at least someone who takes modeling serious because that's gonna show in the way the photos turn out also another person or business style to collaborate with is fashion designers fashion and makeup go hand in hand photography fashion makeup models boom hair stylist hair stylist how can i forget hair stylist those five people collaborate with them if you have a friend or you know somebody who do hair tell her let's get a model she she could do the hair the model's hair you could do the models makeup yeah i could get a photographer and boom i have a whole collab right there and then that's cross promotion because now that's three of you well no four of you including the model posting that content so y'all cross promoting each other boom getting yourself out there in your billing and portfolio when starting out don't worry about doing stuff for free you're gonna have to do stuff for free because you're trying to build yourself you ain't just gonna be lit off the bat i used to collab a lot like i collaborated so much especially moving from brooklyn to upstate like i started all over from scratch so i had to get myself out there i was just trying to meet people i used to do events for free fashion shows all type of stuff like really just take every opportunity you can to put yourself out there to get people to know you and who you are have confidence have confidence in yourself and focus on you don't worry about what anyone else got going on focus on you and as a new makeup artist you want to make sure that you are coachable and teachable you do not know everything so be open to taking constructive criticism taking advice from other people especially from people who are in the industry be open to constructive criticism from your clients if they're telling you that they don't like something or whatever be patient and work it out don't come in thinking you know everything because you don't and it's a learning experience you're always going to be learning and growing until this day i've been doing makeup for almost a decade and i am still learning all the time and i'm still changing all the time so just always be coachable always have a listening air always be willing to learn from someone else okay um like i said be confident focus on yourself relax when meeting clients be friendly always be polite like always be polite do not check your attitude if you're going through something leave that at the door when it comes to work and building your brand like i said you represent your brand you always want to make sure your energy is on point and you're giving your client a good experience because word of mouth is everything if you make that client feel great about the service you provide and you have them leave looking amazing you made them feel great they look amazing they're gonna rock with you forever and they're gonna tell their friends and everybody else to rock with you too so always make sure that you are providing a good experience for your clients whether it's a new client or returning client that is a major key practice practice practice practice always practice be coachable and be friendly put yourself out there step out your comfort zone meet new people mingle you'll get there you'll get there and i have faith in you so i hope you guys enjoyed this video i hope it was very helpful please do not forget to give this video a thumbs up and comment down below let me
