But he now finds himself in a far different position from the one he occupied earlier this year: the frontrunner, with a decent chance to win. The fact that farage has fallen out of favour is partly a function of the fallout from the panama papers scandal, and a measure of a wider disillusionment with UK politics. That the uk seems to be following the example set by the US to take the uk out of the european convention on human rights is perhaps a more important factor. Farage has never been an opponent of the EU, and he will not be trying to reverse immigration controls. But as an advocate for Britain's position within it, he's no longer an influential presence in the party's upper echelons. In may, he was effectively ejected from the leadership contest when he announced that he would stand down if the party could not produce a nominee to take his place. But despite his personal difficulties, he was still the only candidate who would be likely to win a ballot contest to replace him. There were always going to be those hoping his resignation would allow the conservatives to replace him at next year's EU elections, which the party needs to ensure it does well to have any hope of victory. But garage and his supporters would not have relished another three months of conservative campaign activity. The party would have also, presumably, made a play to bring him back into the cabinet to help shape Brexit negotiations, and would have had the backing of his right-wing supporters on the nec.
