EXTRAMURAL RESEARCH Research grants will be made to public and private nonprofit institutions on behalf of a principal investigator. TRAINEESHIPS Awards will be made to individuals who elect to undertake postbaccalaureate training in some phase of medical librarianship or other health information specialties. Individuals make arrangements with a sponsor and institution who agree to arrange and sponsor the trainee's program of instruction. The award may provide a stipend and an allowance for travel and tuition if required. Applications are evaluated by two review panels. The evaluation takes into account the qualifications of the applicant and sponsor and the merits of the proposed training program. Approved applications compete for available funds, and awards are made for a period of one year. Application may be made on form PHS-1 891 (Rev. 9-55). The deadlines for the receipt of applications are February 1, June 1, and October 1. Traineeships may begin on the first day of any month, but applications must be submitted at least six months prior to the requested starting date. TRAINING GRANTS Training grants will be made to public or private nonprofit institutions. Such grants may provide funds for stipends, tuition, travel, materials, and compenstion for the professional and other staff who contribute substantially to the training program. Applications for such assistance may propose nondegree or postbaccalaureate degree programs designed to provide training for research or service in medical librarianship and other health information specialties. Applications for training grants are evaluated by two groups of nonfederal consultants. The evaluation includes such factors as the objective PHS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS Public Health Service postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded to individuals to enable them to pursue training in research which is designed to prepare them for research careers in the health information specialties. Prior to application for a fellowship, individuals make arrangements with a sponsor and institution 96 97 LATE NEWS ITEMS who agree to provide the desired training. Fellowship awards usually are made for a period of not less than one year and not more than three years. Applications are evaluated by two review groups. While there are no deadlines for the receipt of fellowship applications, individuals should apply at least eight months in advance of the requested beginning date. Detailed program plans and application forms for support of other programs authorized by the Medical Library Assistance Act (construction, resources, regional libraries, and special scientific projects) are being developed. When it is possible to accept applications in these programs, appropriate announcements will be made. TRAINEESHIPS AT UCLA The Biomedical Library, University of California Center for the Health Sciences, Los Angeles, is offering four traineeships in medical librarianship for 1966/67. The program provides a year of planned work combined with enrollment in a limited number of courses selected from the following fields: biological sciences, history of science, information sciences (documentation), and foreign languages. The program has been approved by the Medical Library Association for Grade II certification and is supported by a grant from the U. S. Public Health Service. Applicants must be citizens of the United States (or have applied for citizenship) and hold a master's degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association. The deadline for submitting applications is March 15, 1966.
