Spring 2010:
Reboot Your Brain,
Take a Class
From the desk of Ken Colen,
President, On Top of the World Communities:
There are two things that are very clear in the way that Master the
Possibilities conducts its business: The classes represent exceptional
variety, and the quality is unmatched. When we began our life long
learning initiative, we didn’t strive to be “as good as” any other program. We wanted to set the standard. In this, our fifth year, I think
our performance is evidence that education is at its best at Master
the Possibilities. This is our 18th quarterly catalog and we continue
to offer the best in life long learning. As always, over half of these
offerings are brand new. The “encores” represent classes that have
wait lists — now you can experience what you might have missed.
As for format, our evening classes have proved very successful
over the past 6 months. We’ll continue them, and with days being
longer, expect them to be as popular as our day programs.
This quarter we have put together another “Florida Week.” Both
the native Floridians and the newest transplants will find interesting
classes that focus on our own “Sunshine State.” Don’t miss any of
these opportunities.
See you in class… and thank you all.
In the Winter (January — March) season, we were able to top 7,000
enrollments! We now have about 4,000 students who use Master the
Possibilities. We are most gratified by your support and will continue
to develop the highest quality educational programming we can.
You deserve no less. We realize this is a great challenge, a greater
opportunity and wonderful privilege.

• If you registered online and provided an e-mail, we will e-mail you notice of changes for your classes;
otherwise we will call you.
• We will post changes on OTOW-TV.
While there are bound to be some short notice/emergency changes, it’s our objective to make you aware of what we do and when
we have changes.

For those technophobes and inquisitive minds, something unique to really open your eyes
to the latest in digital technologies. The Marion County Sheriff’s Emergency Management
Mobile Command Center (18 wheel trailer) has incorporated state-of-art technology
to support the National Incident Management System (Homeland Security Initiative in
response to 9/11/2001). This Mobile Command Center (MCC) vehicle contains the latest
technology for ground, wireless, and satellite radio/phone/IP communications, aerial
and local video integration, satellite and topological 3-d mapping, etc. This technology
integrates these digital/analog signals for random display and switching between multiple
displays, inside the MCC, and externally, to support multi-agency staging command and
control. This will be the first public showing of the new technology and capabilities to
provide command and control in any Marion County emergency situation and can be
deployed, if required, outside of Marion County in case of a major catastrophe anywhere
in North America. Demonstration of these capabilities will be limited to 6 registrants at
a time which will maximize interactive participation. The Mobile Command Center trailer
will be parked outside the Master the Possibilities Education Center all day to support
multiple class times.

The transfer of non-titled property is an issue that impacts families on multiple levels. All
families have objects they place a sentimental value on. Sometimes ownership and the
passing on of these items is as emotional as transferring the titled properties. Having a
plan in place has the potential for a casual exchange rather than a heated familial debate.
Learn how to open the discussion and carry on from there. Put a plan in place. Make it
fun by being prepared.

in England, Australia and Canada! Non-British citizens were detained as “possible spies.”
This group consisted of Nazis . . . and German Jews. We will show the documentary, “The
Spies that Never Were,” that chronicles this historical event. Afterwards George Meyerson
will lead an informal discussion. George was one of these detainees. His insights are

The escape of China from the clutches of Maoism and its meteoric rise has been one
of the most momentous and unexpected global events of the past quarter century.
China has become a central player in world commerce and, as the trillion dollar holder
of US bonds, has been fingered, justly or not, as a key contributor to the current global
financial crisis. This lecture will provide a broad overview of China’s culture and society
and then address three key questions: How did China make this spectacular rise? Will
this ascendancy continue and China come to lead the world, or will China’s authoritarian
regime implode and China wall herself off from the world as she has in times past? What
are the implications of China’s future trajectory for the U.S. and the world?

The Birds of Homosassa
Springs State Park
Homosassa Springs State Park is home to a treasure trove of Florida wildlife. While you
can spend a day enjoying Lu (short for Lucifer) the hippo and watching the antics of
otters, bears, flamingoes, manatees and others, this course will concentrate on the birds
of Homosassa. One of the very few places where you can see most of our native raptors up
close and personal affords us an opportunity to sort out the differences between Sharpshinned and Coopers hawks, Red-shouldered, Red-tailed, Broad-winged and Swainson’s
hawks as well as Kestrels and Merlins. Truly, a living classroom for birding enthusiasts. All
are invited to spend a full day or as much of it as you like walking the park, enjoying the
animals and sitting in on presentations on many nature related topics. Be sure to allow
time for the underwater observation area with the manatees up close and personal! Trip
starts with a short boat ride to the park. We will spend the first hour or so observing
and learning about all the birds including those in captivity and the “wild ones” attracted
by them. *NOTE: Students will leave on Thursday, April 29 at 9:00 AM from MTP by carpool
or in your own cars. Tuition includes class on April 27 and admission to the park on April 29.

Balfour and Before and

Israelis-Arab Conflict
Instructor: Bill Wallett

Thursdays, May 13 and May 20, 2010
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Everyone has heard of the Arab-Israeli conflict in the Middle East but almost no one really
understands it or has any idea of how to solve it. Any discussion of the issue usually begins
with the Balfour Declaration of 1917 and that is part of the problem. The roots go much
deeper. Bill Wallett lived in Israel and counts Israelis and Arabs among his friends. His
experience combined with a love of History and Sociology led him to study the pasts of
both Arabs and Jews. This has led to insights and revelations that are “outside of the box”
but must be considered in any intelligent study of the problem. He will begin with the
“blood feud” that started it all and follow the various dispersions of the Jews from their
homeland until their eventual return in 1948, but may go beyond to present day or close
to it. This will include their influence on the culture around them and the influence of
the surrounding culture upon them. Come prepared to experience a presentation of the
Arab-Israeli dilemma from an entirely fresh viewpoint. Questions are welcome. (Note: These
sessions contain new and expanded material not in original presentation.)

women with fewer resources and ill prepared to handle the finances. This program is

The Root Cause
Instead of just dismissing chronic disease to our genes, we need to take a different
approach. The truth is that disease is affected by our genes but most importantly by
our environment. There are 7 clinical imbalances that cause all disease. Instead of just
taking a particular drug for a particular disease we need to look at the underlining
cause of the disease. Our goals should be finding the root cause, stopping it from
getting worse, and reversing the damage as much as possible. This will hopefully be
the first in a series of lectures focused on “the root cause” of disease.

such as poetry and other sayings that can be given as gifts. Students will learn to become
marketable from addressing envelopes to starting their own calligraphy business
(if they wish). If there is time other calligraphy hands will be taught and/or addressed.
All supplies will be provided. Just come and have fun!
Resident: $30 / Non-Resident: $35
Lazy summer days, not a care in the world spent enjoying nature best describes “Snail’s
Pace.” This little guy is drawn with wax-based Prismacolor pencils on Mi-Teintes paper.
You will transfer the simplified design onto the paper then start the gradual application
of color with pencils, adding layer upon layer to create depth and dimension to your
artwork. You will use a colorless blender to make your gradations and blending easier
and smoother looking. Makes a great companion piece to “Make a Wish.” Check MTP
lobby a few weeks before class to see original artwork.
