Good examples are Cirrus Insight and Yesware which allow the end user to install their Gmail app, and then login to Salesforce so they can synch emails with their Leads and Contacts.I wish there were an easier way as our own product is oft desired by the sales or marketing leader, but then gets held up waiting to go through the admin.
