the greater Baton Rouge industry alliance is a trade association whose members are made up of 57 industrial and having industrial manufacturing companies located in eight parishes around the greater Baton Rouge area our purpose is to drive and develop new solutions to issues such as safety performance and workforce development it started off as a group of site managers from around the area that got together to pursue items of common interest to safety being first and foremost and then also workforce development tonight we're here to honor the contractors and their safety performance in our plans we work together as not just a board of directors but the entire membership to draw try to drive the safe performance of our companies and our contractors by learning from each other our number one focus is always on the safety of our employees of our communities so we work together we have things that we can share every day around safety we are recognizing excellent safety performance of the contract companies who work in the plants the board has done a wonderful job of getting the membership to embrace the fact that they have the opportunity together to make this the safest industry that anyone can work at if you look at the safety record of our industry it is tremendous and that has come about through the close working of these companies in these contractor companies between the owner companies and the contractor companies we sport a very good safety record but we never rest until we're perfect we're honoring contractors and soft and hard crafts and then also specialty contractor soft crafts are the ones that are like a scaffold building painters things like that and hard crafts are the welders pipefitters electricians and then specialty are the other ones that don't fully fit neither of those two examples of safety excellence include a low injury rate so many of the companies have gone thousands or millions of hours with no injuries other examples includes things like instituting a new buddy program or something innovative where the companies have broken through and improved behaviors that lead to zero incidents a safety is the first and foremost and most important thing we do its operating our plant safe safely is how we get our license to operate the communities we operate in and expect to stop right them safely and we owe that duty to our communities so that's why it's important our contractors are working our sites they're part of what we do we have an emphasis this time this year on one team that we're all in this together that it's just as important that a plant employee that works for me goes home safely as well as all the contractors that are on our side when you look at the award winners they have put like all the companies so much effort into making sure that all of the systems are in place so that all of their employees go home safely every day and if you look at some of the winners we've had and some of the companies they do things like bill scaffold assemble pipe work on equipment clean the equipment and they put processes procedures together they motivate their employees to make sure that everyone is watching out for each other tonight's theme I think it's perfect it comes from saying that the site director in Louisiana operations for Dow has one team which means we all work together we all watch out for each other and make safety the top priority so when I walk out in the field I know that the person that's building the scaffold is watching out for me just like I as a maintenance director I'm watching out for he or four sheep that's important because our communities expect the industry's to be safe and our companies and our employees expect to go home the same way that they went to work every day they want to go home to their families safely every day we share best practices we get together with technology exchanges when we have safety experts come in and discuss what they're doing in other places things they've seen we also get together and we've developed a hydro blasting standard this was an area that we thought we needed a lot more work on and so we've developed a standard now for all of hydro blasting contractors that they need to they'll need to meet that standard by the end of this year they won't be able to work in our plans the award wimmer winners are chosen by a very dedicated group of individuals from the gabrielle organization we have wonderful staffs and all of our plants very committed to safety so they spend their time interviewing going through the submissions going through the nominations and looking at the very detailed criteria to pick the award winners out but everybody who's nominated is a winner everybody is who is nominated means one of the owner companies thought enough of that contractor safety performance to say they need to be nominated they need to be considered everybody is a winner tonight this is a great event I'm looking forward to it and hope you have a good time my name is connie fabry i'm the executive director of the greater baton rouge industry alliance welcome to the 18th annual greater baton rouge industry alliances contractor safety excellence awards banquet I would like to thank all of our attendees this evening for your dedication each day to making our workplaces safe this evening is a tribute to all of you our theme for tonight is one team a team is not just people who work at the same time in the same place a real team is a group of different individuals who share a commitment to working together to achieve common goals no one is equal in experienced talent or education but they are equal in one vitally important way their commitment to the good of the organization and just like in sports in industry it takes hard work dedication and achieving a certain level of discipline to keep your safety programs performing at the optimal level to accomplish the job flawlessly and our safety efforts have shown in 2013 that building teamwork is is central to developing an effective team and when we go through our life in this industry being safe practicing safety and achieving that one team culture we occasionally get together and just have a little fun tonight we're going to celebrate professionals coming together who work hard all year long putting in those long hard hours industries facilitate operational excellence through networking and exchanges maintain a vibrant and successful and involved membership and finally provide stewardship stewardship to budget and maintain the highest level of financial integrity tonight is all about our first tenant achieve an injury and incident free workplace the contractor safety excellence awards supports this tenant by recognizing the safety performance of individual companies to convey debris a strong support of contractor safety performance and acknowledge that our contractors are an extension of our own workforce we want to make kibriya member workplaces injury free and we are counting on you to help us achieve this goal and its success or its failure really does depend upon each one of us in the room tonight I would like to introduce our special guest for this evening that some of you have already had the pleasure of meeting this person is a Louisiana legend and one of the greatest college baseball coaches of all time this coach is unyielding desire to succeed has achieved him five national championships 11 College World Series appearances 7 SEC championships and he has been named national coach for the year five times during his 18 year coaching career at LSU he compiled a career record of over eight hundred seventy wins was inducted into the college baseball hall of fame in 2006 the Louisiana sports hall of fame and to the American baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame we will forgive him for being a University of Miami graduate since he has turned LSU baseball into the nation's premier program and LSU athletics into the premier power that it is today but ladies and gentlemen please help me welcome coach Stanley skip Bertman this evening I'd like to talk a little bit about safety and of course your experts but I want to talk about believing you can motivation and of course safety and teamwork sometimes using athletics took a your funny bone make you think and of course hope you touch your heart Sports is a lot like life you do it every day it's got its ups and downs it's forever moving forward forever changing it's got rules it's got official it's got boundaries people push and search and chase excellence even perfection and of course everybody learns about teamwork and like you have already been told safeties and added dude it's how you feel attitude is how you feel about your family how you feel about school how you feel about athletics or how you feel about anything at your attitude and you've grown up we've grown up in a culture of safety I mean from the time you were too young and mom said don't cross that Street without me to the time you're bigger and mom said look both ways look left look right and then look left again don't run with those scissors don't wave that pencil you poke somebody's eye out all the way to today's guys on the top of tall buildings tied off to fire retardant clothing to an attitude and the proud feeling that you have in safety and I applaud that for you even a simple job like a flange a pipe fitter and a welder they're working together there is teamwork and they got to mitigate even though this seems like a small job they got to mitigate the situation circumstances i guess like you can never eliminate every risk every time but there's no doubt about it honest to god i would feel safer in your plant as a worker or visitor then i would at my house because you use the best there is to ensure the safety at the home people have to make a decision do we want to go that far or does it hurt that much but you don't do that you fill out a JSA every single time when you think about it I always told the players in critical situations as you should tell as supervising their awareness to be available what's going to happen next heighten your awareness grow an antenna and make sure that you can see everything around you you can foretell have some kind of look like Wayne Gretzky always knew where the puck was going to be and somehow he was aware Derek Jeter plays in the right spot I guess that makes them they had a higher level of awareness and that's of course what you're doing so as a coach if I want to hit and run and I don't have to explain much start the runner from first base when the guy you know it was the pitch and I really just want to stay out of a double play but if the guy hits the ball well getting second base he might even get him to third or score but there's risk what if they pitch out and catch my runner what if my batter swings and misses and they throw to run around one of you is a line drive and they catch it short a double them off at first I can't eliminate all the risk but I can mitigate like take it 2-1 pitch they're not got a pitch out when t's two on one okay or how about this I did make sure you get a good contact hitter up you know guy that doesn't swing and miss a lot you know he puts the ball and playing knows his role I can mitigate some circumstances okay and maybe he'll end up where he belongs at second base to third now I've never read this anywhere nobody's ever said this to me but I want your purple on this 15,000 years ago the caveman that worried about his safety up lasted the caveman who did not what do you think yeah you agree yeah yeah well congratulations to all the winners tonight and congratulations to Connie and her staff we as owners and operators of industrial facilities get our license to operate from the state but really it comes from the communities in which we operate we must build the trust of our neighbors and we do that by safely operating our plants so safety is a partnership with our contractors and without which we could not bring one team the safety committee again this year at a very without the operators without the engineers we have need for these types of skills we want young people to always consider going to a job in science and technology in engineering and math study very hard on those things and for parents encourage your children to do so these are the jobs of the few we are really excited and we find it very special to be providing these awards to the contractors they have done an excellent job these are the best of the best contractors to even be nominated for these awards is a really high on any winner tonight speaks volumes about what what safety does for each of them and that's sort of the outcomes and the results of their focus on safety and the investment that they choose to make to deliver safe work environment I'm here as both a motivator for the speed to them to help the safety and to tell them you know just how good they really are and to put together the teamwork say angle that safety requires so you got to have a lot of people and their got to trust each other and that's what safety really is in this industry safety is top most priority I would say it's even a value for us and many others in industry that we share it governs the way we do work the choices we make to make sure and ensure that everyone is working safely the work conditions are safe the practices are delivering safe work environment and making sure that at the end of the day everyone goes home safely there's probably 80 20 men and women here and that's good changing you know rapidly there was 90 10 you know 25 years ago and we're doing much much better in this field for ladies it was you know pretty excited for us we wasn't expecting you know the whole thing and I'm really excited for our company be working for the last three years on try to achieve this reward and I really appreciate that second place is great you know we're always achieving to be the best so next year you know we'll continue to keep our programs going and grow woman and make them stronger and you know go for number one but we're excited we're very proud I God has done a great job words can't explain the the world we got tonight it was kind of giving hits and awards that we don't get number one but this first and foremost exceeds number one in my book and also for the company safety starts as a company not only as myself but our whole coming in and it all starts says number one guy starting in the gates the first green guy on the gates it starts to number one all the way to our vice presidents or the owner of the company if it's if safety is not involved we're not gonna have anything to do with it I mean we died and live you know each and every day with safety and that's number one to us and this what really means a lot to us past three years we've been working really hard to achieve this and tonight paid off but safety is a journey and we learn from each other and this is part of what Gabrielle does sharing best practices raising the game for safe work practices whether it's in technology and maintenance raising the competency of contractors and crafts to make sure that they're executing their work and learning their techniques and trades in a way that delivers excellence in in their trades but also excellence in safety it's not anything that we've done a management our team is very dedicated and committed to our beyond zero which is our south side and our approach to safety and in the flanges up well with Exxon and thousand kibriya and the rest of the organizations around here it's our pursuit into you know keeping everyone safe a lot of people think it's just you know a month-to-month quarter a quarter type deal we you know myself and my safety team on site mutt plus the off-site team you know we enforce it with weekly safety notes down to daily safety means to about meetings every day if it's starting a beach shift to each and every shift start whether that be the first in the morning midnight mid-afternoon break or afternoon break so right now we are working to the viet VPP company on site and an npc we suppose you know this there will be a our top gear on you know how to save this tunnel and I will proceed to be a safety bbp company the site manager that's what I focus on most importantly every day I worry about making sure that the workplace is safe the conditions are safe folks are trained contractors and employees alike understand the expectations for safe work as as I do or perform work for us on site and i asked him to just take it on a personal level as i do because my goal is for them to go home safely to their loved ones and their families working save is a day but they thin and this means you know like they recognize what we're doing and it's a good thing that's what I mean how are you guys going to celebrate when you bring up that back to the office words can't explain we're definitely going to show our gratitude appreciation to the employees on site and go from there people can get more
