I'd never been told it was possible to get paid for notarizing papers or certificates. I asked my wife to mail me the document, but when I finally got it back, there was no certificate of authority, just a notice that the event had been canceled because a "cancellation fee" was required. My wife tried to pay by money order. I gave up and had the event rescheduled.
What the event was supposed to accomplish
In April, I wrote to the local government informing them that the event we intended to hold was illegal. I explained that it was unconstitutional for local government to impose a "tax" or fee on my event without first getting my written permission to do so. The letter went to the city manager, who told me that he would try to resolve the issue with the council and to "keep a watchful eye on the event." I told him that was not very helpful.
In June, we held our first event. The event was scheduled for September 9; my brother called and said he was coming, and that he would not be able to make the event, because the city had changed the date and wanted a new certificate of authority.
