How to industry sign banking massachusetts ppt safe

good afternoon everyone thank you for joining us online today for our tech week webinar on using digital tools to improve safety outcomes i'm gloria and i'll be your facilitator today before we begin there are some housekeeping items this webinar is recorded and will be made available an email to everyone who has attended and registered anytime during the session feel free to send through your questions through the q a button at your screen and we will try to answer them at the end so joining me today we have alex perryas-levitz a mechanical engineer from becker and philip runoff the health and safety advisor from nailer love so alex and floyd can you give me a short introduction to yourself sure thing so my name is alex i'm currently working in the digital industrial section for becca and my work is primarily in virtual reality some software development and mechanical work i'm actually seconded to bicker from the royal new zealand navy to learn some more about digital technologies fleur i'm fleur i'm a health and safety advisor for nailer love currently working at the cab projects in aits square i've been working in construction for over 12 years and health and safety for around seven my main job is to make sure that nayla loves how healthy systems are understood and implemented on site by working with business contractors and the site team and monitoring what's happening on site great thank you as we may all agree workplace safety is important for each and every employee in all industries it is our duty and our responsibility to protect our workers subcontractors customers and members of the public when they are involved in our business the safety culture in the workplace has changed drastically over the decades and in our 21st century we're seeing companies adopt and implement their own systems and procedures to provide a safe working environment so today alex and flo will be sharing with us real life cases on current applications of digital tools to make health and safety more engaging and effective the three topics that we'll be covering today are virtual reality for training digital tools to assist working in covert times and using remote expertise so take it away alex thanks gloria so the first digital tool that we will cover is virtual reality so for those who don't know virtual reality is when you put on a headset and that immerses you in a scene or video and based on the headset you can interact with the environment so the range of headsets you could have so from basic models where you just insert your phone to dedicated headsets to whole rooms that have video tracking as well so you can walk around and properly interact so how can virtual reality help with health and safety so the first way can help is through inductions so right now when someone comes onto site into a factory into an office they need to conduct a health and safety induction normally this is someone talking and explaining to them the health and safety procedures and at best is a powerpoint presentation and how do we currently assess whether people have understood the health and safety requirements we go have you understood who's going to say no to that so there's no accurate way of really assessing how much people have taken on and not just in words but in practice as well there's also difficulty with non-native english speakers where you can't be sure whether some words might have not been comprehended in the way that you wanted to so what we did is we created a virtual reality tour so it's you put on the headset and you can explore different scenes to look around the health and safety induction site you also have some small tasks and activities to complete uh such as reading information bubbles search and find activities where you have to locate equipment or things like that and multi-choice questions so i'll give you an example so you can imagine a bit better imagine it's your first day working in industrial kitchen so you put on your headset and you look around there's a kitchen as you turn you see an information bubble pop up and it says there's a fire suppressant above the deep fat fryer and the button to activate it is by the door good information to know you keep turning and there's a search and find activity and it says locate all sharp equipment so you look around there's a knife there's some scissors there's a cheese grater good work keep turning and multi-choice question appears and it asks what happens when if you burn your hand you look through the answers and run it under cold water nice and then you move on to the next scene so the benefit of this virtual reality tour is that it's really modifiable as well you can have different sites as all you need is a 360 image you can do it for different project milestones so for construction you can do it at the site setup up to the handover stage you can also target it for different career levels of whether it's a general user or whether it's a health and safety advisor different languages can be loaded as well as well as audio files that you can hear so you don't have to read so i'll show you what this actually looks like through the headset so these are screenshots taken from people using it so on the left we have an information bubble on the right uh it's a multiple choice question and on the next slide on the left we have a search and find activity and on the right the assessment result so as you're doing these activities you're getting assessed on how well you're answering them and this is really good because the facilitator can know whether you are safe to proceed on site or whether you need some more training and this ensures that you don't cause injury to yourself don't cause injury to others and don't damage any equipment but why am i telling you about it we have flew with us today who's actually using it on site so she can tell you a bit more about the experiences cool um yes nailer love wanted to become involved in virtuality health safety training as we're always looking for new and innovative ways to improve safety on our sites um as some our subcoinators can lose focus and inductions and virtual reality sound like a good way to get our subbies to get more out of the inductions i personally wasn't sure what to expect going into it and i'd never used uh virtually before but it's been a pretty positive experience so far and the guys definitely find virtual reality more interesting than the standard induction which is generally them just sitting in a room and watching somebody talk and watching a powerpoint presentation which doesn't require very much interaction now they have to actually take part in the induction and its contents and it's great how the induction can show actual areas of the site they're going to be working in and be expected to point out what's wrong um from them answering these questions on the hazard that gives us an idea of how good their knowledge is when it comes to safety before they start on site i'm sure as we all when things go wrong construction it can go very wrong and can be catastrophic to the company and also to the families of the people involved in the long term so it's quite important that we look at new ways to raise our subby's awareness um and so they can recognize it on site with and that's how the virtual reality really can exist that's been good yes great thanks for that fleur um so virtual reality uh there's different uses for it as well except the health and safety inductions that can help with safety outcomes and one of these ways is for standard operating procedures training so what this is is you conduct step-by-step guides to teach you how to perform difficult procedures or deal with emergency situations and what's really beneficial is that it's consequential training you can see the worst possible outcome without having to injure yourself others or damage equipment so there's lots of examples that the sort of training has been used for it's been used for maintenance tasks so where there's a difficult exact process you have to follow it's been used to train up breakdown procedures there's also been some more interesting cases so for example in the us it was used to teach children how to what to do in a lockdown scenario and it's also been used for manager training and diversity and inclusion so the manager puts on the headset and they are having a difficult chat with someone and it guides them through gives them a choose a path sort of virtual reality experience and if they choose the wrong thing it measures how long it will take them to get back to the recommended procedure so i'll give you a real world example of where we have done work with standard operating procedure training and this is with road workers as we all know road workers have a difficult work environment where they have a higher risk of injury or even death so what we did is we developed this virtual reality so again this is what you would see through the headset as you can see it is animated however when everything is moving it feels very real so the objective of this virtual reality training is to pick up the cone that fell over on the right of the image users can transport themselves using the green line and as you can see there's a constant stream of traffic now there are some golden rules that road workers in new zealand abide by and one of these is not to attempt to cross live traffic so this is actually a second benefit so if a user picks it up and straight away tries to cross we can be like well you've forgotten a golden rule this is also to teach some safety procedures and one of these is to stand a meter back from columns at all times in case drivers get distracted so as the users proceed forward the facilitator can show them where the danger area is and what it looks like however if they've gone too far and they're too close to the cones the failure occurrence happens where a car veers off and gets very close so this is beginning to feel very real and there you go the final the failure scenario in reality obviously we would never put people in the situation where they could injure or even get killed and so um by teaching them this through the virtual reality they have an appreciation of how far back they should stand with from cones and why that is so virtual reality has some big benefits as i've mentioned many times it's a safe training environment where you other's equipment are safe it also increases knowledge retention so studies have been shown that a year on after conducting powerpoint training users remember 20 of the content while virtual reality training they remember 80 percent of the information it also allows for ease of assessment so you can have multiple people doing the virtual reality training at the same time and because it's online it's instant assessment it's also suitable for kinetic learners so they're the people that like to learn they're hands-on it's also suitable for non-native speakers as it can have different languages and people that struggle with reading such as people suffering with dyslexia so it's always available always relevant and always engaging let's move on to our second tool for today though so the second tool is quickly deployable apps for curved response so as we all know covert is a pandemic like no other it was completely unprecedented no one was expected really had procedures in place before this year but employers quickly realized as we went to lockdown in new zealand that they need their employees to stay safe be able to maintain social distance you keep operations going this is either to keep the business afloat or to provide essential services they also wanted a app that was readily quickly ready um as well as user friendly so that anyone can use it so we developed the staying safe app so there are a lot of different contact tracing apps i'll just focus on staying safe as it's the one i'm most familiar with so what employees would do in the morning is they'd get up and they'd fill out a health questionnaire and if they're safe to proceed they're safe to proceed on site however if they potentially provide a risk to coming outside such as they've traveled recently or by them coming to sight they could provide a risk to themselves such as they are immunocompromised or they live with elderly people in their household it would email or text the manager and the manager can decide on how to proceed they then once they proceed to cite if clear to do so there's a few different ways that they could scan in so one way was self-scan so this can be seen in the left image so they can either scan qr codes or type in manual numbers uh to track where they've been or the security guard can scan them in and what this allows is for um accurate knowledge of who is in which zone when and this includes floor levels rooms and so on there are also some there are also some additional features that you could add such as bluetooth tracking so this will track when you enter a room uh temperature monitoring so when going in the security guard could measure temperature as a second factor for your health and also mass employer notifications so you could send out information as required so this zone is now closed or something like that and this allowed employee employers sorry one to know that the capacity of their building is maintained so people can be socially distant and also it allowed employees to proceed to work confident that they can return home safe so what happens after covet so after new zealand went to alert level one we actually found that a lot of our clients stayed with the staying safe apps we did some minor motor modifications but people still kept using them and that is because they recognize the benefit of having such an app such a digital tool so one it allows you to manage personnel on site you know who is where and when it assists with time sheeting and this is specially relevant for things such as trade so if you're expecting plumbers this week and painters this week you can start asking questions if it doesn't happen it also allows you to track site access so for security reasons of contractors consultants delivery workers and lastly it's really helpful for emergency response we've all been there there's a fire drill in your office everyone gathers outside someone pulls out a roll call that's a year old you sort of go through it but then was jessica getting coffee did the people from hamilton come and work in our office this week it's easier if there's an app that accurately lists who is in which zone and when and now i'll move on to our last digital tool of the day and that is augmented reality used for remote expertise so um the one that i'm going to talk about mostly is hololens like staying safe there are a lot of different options for augmented reality however hololens is the one i'm most familiar with so i'll focus on that so quickly cover off augmented reality for those that don't know it's when you have an image of what is in front of you so like through a camera and something that isn't there pops up so an easy way to imagine this is pokemon go pokemon go is augmented reality so hololens what is that so this is digital glasses as you can see as you can see uh in the picture uh and what this does is you put on the glasses and you can see what's in front of you but then experts from around the world can dial in and they can see what you're seeing as well as well as talk to you and as well as comment on things you're doing so you dial in through microsoft teams and you can draw on what the person is seeing you can link pdfs pictures videos you name it it also can be recorded so you can use it later as a guide and being hands-free it means that you can carry out the maintenance tasks or breakdown tasks as required what's cool about the hololens as well is that it has the dynamics 365 guides so this is pre-recorded step-by-step instructions so as you're doing a maintenance task you see something floating and it shows you loaded here as seen in the picture and this is good either for training or as a reminder when carrying out the task so this has been used many times and it's used for things such as we had a new zealand engineer that had to regularly fly to australia to carry out some maintenance that has if done wrong could have dire cons quences so to save on this uh we had a technician in australia get the hololens and the expert could dial in from new zealand and be able to see what they're seeing as well as comment and see whether there's a chance that something might go wrong so this remote expertise has some really big benefits you get safe and experienced oversight to ensure jobs are done right and this is either maintenance tasks or breakdown procedures so an emergency situation and when a breakdown needs to be fixed quickly so the site doesn't have to stay shut down it also provides reduced risk so this is risk to equipment and product so contamination risk as well as less expo less risk of exposure to hazardous materials for people this is basically due to congestion when you have five people in a small room with acid more risk when you have one person with glasses much less risk you also get direct savings so less travel required less personal protective equipment requirements so only the person that's going in needs it and you also can save a lot of time we've had some clients that have complex decontamination procedures that take up to half an hour and due to limited resources if you have to get like five people in it might take some time but one person with glasses again is a bit quicker and means that the emergency the maintenance whatever needs to be done can be done quicker and lastly facilitates coaching and learning how often can you say that you have had one-on-one training with someone looking through your eyes and focusing on everything you're doing so today we've covered three digital tools that can help with safety outcomes and there's a couple of points that i want to stress before you finish so one digital tools allow for access to a lot of people to work that previously didn't have this access and this creates a more equal workforce and this is the training with hololens with the contact tracing apps second thing i want to mention is uh off the shelf so a lot of people when they think digitization think expensive difficult however even off-the-shelf digital products can really help with your safety outcomes and lastly digitization is smart engineering and smart engineering is inherently safer so what i want you to do today i want you to go back to your office and think about how can digitization help me or those who work around me improve safety outcomes back to you gloria thank you alex that was very interesting and thanks for sharing with us these cool digital tools technology is constantly progressing and changing and not only is it about making things more effective and easy it's really amazing to how see how quickly we can adapt these technologies to a diverse range of applications to meet the current needs of our world so our viewers have sent in some questions and i'm going to ask on their behalf and feel free any time to continue to send these and we'll try to answer them so first one is for flow from an anonymous intendee thanks very much for your thoughts you mentioned that the people being trained were really engaged compared to traditional powerpoint training how much on the of this engagement do you think will wear off over time as vr becomes much more common or do you think that training environment is truly superior um i think they have to be more engaged and they would continue because they actually have to physically do something whereas um normally they do they're just sitting at a table and watching a screen then it is a lot easier to zone out where is it are they always looking at a new scene and having to actually physically answer questions while looking around i think they'll probably keep them engaged a lot longer yeah cool thank you um for alex also on virtual reality from peter he asks traditional health and safety inductions are cheap how does a vr version compare on a cost basis i want to encourage my employer to adopt this technology and delivery as i can see the benefits thanks for the question peter um oh sorry um thanks for the question peter um so obviously talking is cheaper than virtual reality investment however the question that you need to ask is how much would a health and safety incident cost your employer and that's it with this price it's not too much overall if you consider relative to something going wrong thank you sue asked how many different languages can you translate it into virtual reality as well i'm guessing sorry that's for me um unlimited so all you need is a translation service and then it can be done so as long as it can get translated you can put it in to the virtual reality induction and use it and same with audio files awesome thanks alex um another question for fleur how do you feel for how do you find the uptake of these tools i imagine lots of people might be quite hesitant or suspicious yep some of the guys are quite keen to use it um especially you guys use like playstations they kind of think at home anyway some of the guys seem a little bit unsure but they've all found it relatively easy and they will manage to get through it pretty well um yeah pretty surprisingly well actually yeah yeah good and this is guys from english's second language as well i've also found it quite easy as well which is good yeah that's good to know um also another question for alex from an anonymous attendee when you generate a training experience for people presumably you need to decide what you are going to train them on foot talk photograph the scene etc so presumably you have to build a storyboard can you talk us through this process and how much detail you have to go into uh absolutely so when we did our first virtual um tour uh we did create a photo board uh sorry storyboard so it was a storyboard of what the person the contract sorry the employer wanted to cover so a storyboard was created photographs were planned and then once this was um implemented it was pretty simple so you just take a few site scans put questions in and you're ready to go cool a question on a question from kevin for alex can you talk a bit about overcoming connectivity issues at remote or restricted sites um i'm assuming this for virtual reality as well but i'll cover for a bit more so you can have them hardwired for virtual reality training to computers so that you can um do the tour itself for but you do need an internet connection to begin with um so when you're loading everything up um for the other ones for staying safe uh apps you did need internet connection um just to generate the qr code so maybe just at home when you do it there and uh what's other one hololens yes you do need uh internet connectivity for hololens to connect to microsoft teams thank you seems like we are gaining a lot of interest on the virtual reality um type of technology a question for flow on virtual reality again was the vr experience only being able to be done one at a time how would you carry out inductions for groups onboarding onto a project um well the trial that i've been doing we've had eight is that what they mean we've actually had eight sets so that's been what we've been able to do we have had more than eight so it's been fine to do all at once as long as you get in about five minutes early and set them all up you can just hand them hand over to answer that question yeah so i guess if you had 20 people inducted you need to have quite a good a good setup maybe do them sets of ages at a time or something but um yeah it's all working okay yep so so you can do more at a time and you can have your hands yeah cool as long as you have enough you know devices to do it yet yeah yeah cool yeah um oh a question for alex on the hololens any word when the hololens 2 will be available it was announced about one year ago but doesn't seem to be on sale yet i'm not sure i feel like this is a question for microsoft not for me i'm sorry yeah that was just to throw you off um a quick anonymous attendee has asked given that these tools are so immersive do you think any of these tools could be used in some way for tourism and to boost our tourism industry so sorry was this for virtual reality or for hololens i think it's any of these so virtual reality has been used already for tourism um and but the difficulty with it is that you either need a headset or you need to have a cardboard setup that you can use and to put your phone and turn look around um for hololens definitely an option so someone can walk around as a tour guide and you can watch through microsoft teams and interact with them i'm not sure if it's been used yet but that is a great idea and definitely should be considered cool um just one last question alex from an anonymous attendee sadly much of the civil construction workforce is functionality illiterate but much of the vr induction seems text heavy how do you see this obstacle being overcome can headsets etc be linked to allow buddy buddying um well we already have audio files so you don't actually have to read it it can be read to you which is good um i'm not sure what buddying means i assume you mean someone assisting you when you are doing virtual reality tools or standard operating procedure training you can see the information you can view it on a screen of what people are seeing in their headsets as well i've also noticed sorry i just had a message hololens 2 is actually out it is the one we're using so they can be purchased from your local supplier and whatever country you're in that's for a previous question thank you for everyone for sending through all these questions and unfortunately we don't have time to go through all of them now but we do hope that you've gained some valuable insights and to our webinar today and please feel free to reach out to us if you have any further questions there's going to be a survey popping up when you leave this webinar so if you could take 20 seconds to respond that would be greatly appreciated and finally we hope to see you in our next tex week webinar which is going to be tomorrow on amplifying a sustainable future thank you everyone
