I was born in 1952 in North Carolina. My parents were born in the South, as were their parents. I have a heavy Southern accent. I’ve lived in the South all my life. The movie theater had a separate entrance for blacks which lead to the balcony. The concession stand had a window open on the other side connected by the stairs where they passed refreshments through.My parents never talked about race. My family grew up on a cotton mill village. My Dad paid $2500 for our house and sold it 30 years later for $12,000. We all worked in the cotton mill. I have four other siblings and am the only one who went to college. I went to work in the mill when I turned 16 and was paid $1.65 an hour in 1969. My Dad was management and we were still poor. My standard of living today is well beyond my father’s dreams.Believe it or not I can remember even the occasional mule pulling a wagon as a black farmer came into our small town to pick up supplies. I grew up as a child removed from this issue or having any experiences with blacks until 1969.There were no blacks on my community baseball team. There were no blacks at my school. What jobs? Almost every state position if it didn’t require special certifications went a political referral. The South has it down to an art the good old boy network of getting things done for your friends and locking all others out.I remember when my mother died when she was 88. I’m 65 now. I was going through her closet looking at a stack of newspapers she had kept. She kept one because one of my siblings had a sports event or award in it, but what shocked me, this was a few years ago, this was in 1968 I think in the local paper, was a full-page advertisement for the KKK. It was a snapshot of the culture and the community of that time. In the newspaper with the high school sports page of football, and local news, with the social columns and gossip columns talking about who’s in the hospital or who is visiting who.It was a perfect small town like the movie Pleasantville except there was this clan ad. The ad said that there would be a meeting and all good Christians were welcome. No alcohol was allowed because this was a wholesome family event. This was the South in the late 60’s. It was a perfect anachronism, and blot to an otherwise seemingly perfect small-town experience except the experience was only perfect for whites.I remember when the schools were integrated crosses were burnt in the yards of school board members, but it really was on the peripheral of my life experience. I remember rioting of the schools on the high school level for maybe the first week of integration. I remember the fear of blacks and whites, but it was more like how some bad parents run amok starting fights at a child community baseball team. It wasn’t about the children. It was about the parents and adults who were seeing their culture changing. There world changing before their eyes.“Twelve Years A Slave” was the most painful movie I’ve ever forced myself to watch. It made me realize that the black experience in America has similarities to the Jewish experience in Germany. It was America’s holocaust. It is a hard time in history for America. I say America because it happened in the South because of economic reasons. It happened because the South had the climate to grow cotton. The difference is climate not people.The 1% rich grew cotton. In 1793 the cotton gin was invented. Slavery grew out of the rich growing cotton. While the South grew cotton the North was having an industrial revolution. It had different economically driven forces. The North benefited from cheap cotton. They bought it. They used it, and they didn’t boycott the use of cheap cotton cultivated by slaves.Racism born of slavery became part of the culture from trying to rationalize the practice through religion, through minimizing the humanity of one race and extolling the rights of another. Of course, there are many factors, but this is the bones of it. The culture became systemic throughout all classes of whites.I contend that if the North’s economics was based on cotton and slaves and the South had an industrial revolution the roles could have easily been reversed. To believe things against their own self-interest.Look at say West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Pennsylvania today that support coal. They support coal because of economics despite science and global warming issues. Economics drives culture and beliefs.Do you really believe that Southerners are just born with racist bad genes? Influences of history and especially the rich and powerful drive history. They even get to tell their version of history that makes it in the history books most of the time.Here are some dates to think about. The 19th Amendment was passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote. Brown versus Board of Education in 1954, and The Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965 giving blacks and minorities the right to vote. The entire country sits back and chose not to pursue these rights until forced.Just in the last ten years I’ve seen more and more racial diverse couples openly walking around in the South expressing affection with families. This would have been unheard of not too many years ago.If I could pick one of the most pervasive, and unpleasant problems it would be racial discrimination in all its forms. Even small instances of racial discrimination such as feeling that you are followed around in a store by a clerk because they think you might steal, would be so damning to your dignity, and self-concept even unsaid, and unspoken it festers, and affects us all, demeans us all. Then moving along the continuum of racial discrimination to the other end of the spectrum are instances that lead to death by the police, or not getting a job or home. Race issues are the worst most systemic problem we have, and its not exclusive to the South. I think this is the biggest lie and misunderstanding that hurts my heart and soul. This is a stereotype.It is ignorance and the same bias the South is accused of having that says the South is more racist than the rest of the country. When we all were kids, my cousins and other friends of mine used to whisper stuffs into my ears, like everyone does. I used to feel puzzled that what are they saying, I used to let it off. I thought it's nothing. Later only I realised its people were talking about something. That time I made sure to let people know to talk face to face and not to whisper into my ears, as it would have been of no use.  Basically it's both a rewarding experience as well as a learning experience for me. It's then I realised that I do have parents and family as supports, but I can't expect them to find all the answers for me as they are also learning it along with me. I had to learn to find those by myself. They (my parents and my close family) have tried their best to make my life easier, by talking in English to me, and conversing to me with the help of social medias like WhatsApp, messaging. They even try to ensure if subtitles are happening for the particular movie we plan to watch in theatre. My aunts (like my parent's sisters, or their brother's wife) try their best to converse with me in English, and they keep lamenting for not having learnt proper English. I try my best to convince them that's it's alright, I really appreciate their efforts. It's actually my family who has been really supportive in this journey of mine. I do thank god for having received an amazing family. My parents let me know beforehand, that I would definitely have to do hardwork, but I always left it aside. Now though I know the value of hardwork. I used to believe that if I weren't deaf, my life would be easier. But then I realised, life being easier isn't full of sunshine, it tends to get boring after a while. Came to the conclusion that life should be a mixture of Hardwork and relaxation too. Every single and small achievements of mine are recorded in my family mind. Few Hindi words spoken is a delight for them. Or if I achieve something related to hearing stuff, they express their happiness. They know it's not taken for granted. Couple of things happened after I joined this family. ->Made English language a part of daily conversations, not just Hindi. ->Let everyone know that I am actually normal, and made me comfortable in the atmosphere.  ->Taught me to live comfortably and manage in this world.->Taught that impossible is just a word. ->Even my younger brother looks up to me, I don't think he knows that I actually have a disability. ->Learnt that I am a good human being.  ->Learnt that family and close friends will stand by you, for anything. ->Oh yeah, how could I forget the overprotective shell I am in, created by my parents.  Basically it's an amazing journey for me.
