hi guys this week i'm going to talk about how to move to hawaii we've gotten some questions about how we did it and i'm going to talk about our experience moving to the island today uh before we start please like this video and subscribe to our channel because we love making vlogs for you guys let's get started first things first you gotta know what island you were going to go to there are several items you can live on and we are on the island of oahu so this video is going to go specifically about our experience on oahu um but each island has their own vibe your experience is going to be different there um we moved here because of denny's job so three things that were important for us to prepare to move were savings shipping our car and booking an airbnb for the first month so we save in general so we already had money um to come here we budgeted to have about ten thousand dollars for a move here to hawaii including shipping costs um the airbnb um the first month's friend deposit stuff like that [Music] so uh we drove our car to la and we used matson i will link everything i'm talking about in the description box below but we used madison to ship our car from la to honolulu it cost us about fifteen hundred dollars and it took two weeks to get to oahu um which worked out great because we have two weeks of quarantine um we rented an airbnb in waikiki for four weeks i highly recommend doing that instead of just a couple of days or a week in a hotel this way you can get acclimated you can drive around the island see what neighborhoods you'd like to live in and just get a feel for where you are because you just moved to an entirely different place and that is basically how we prepared for our move how to get a place in hawaii and i'm going to talk about renting an apartment instead of buying we've never bought a house and it's a totally different ball game while we were quarantining we looked online um again i'll link the websites we use down below we basically messaged a bunch of landlords and scheduled visitations to see the places you don't have apartment complexes like on the mainland it's just landlords it could be in their own house so it's very personal so you will message with them directly um there is a bit of an adjustment to your expectations it's an island things are a bit more dated here so for example what i notice is that on the mainland you have central heat and air i do not experience that here people have either no ac portable ac or a window unit so stuff like that just you know think about that um depending on where you're coming from as well you will probably have a higher cost of living that's the case for us as well we move from orlando here to hawaii and we are spending much more rent for less space for us it didn't matter to have less space also because we don't have a lot of stuff we basically sold all of our furniture and what we owned and came to hawaii with four check bags and that's it i wouldn't necessarily recommend that for everyone because buying stuff here is also expensive so it might be more beneficial for you to ship your items to hawaii which can cost a couple of thousand dollars rather than buying all your furniture here a benefit of dealing with landlords is that you can negotiate so we negotiated our term the lease term as well as rent and also at the different apartments i've noticed that i could get the rent lower it was still too high for us but they uh took 100 to 200 off their rent um for the month so that's pretty good so it's possible another benefit of having an airbnb or a hotel for a month is you get to explore the island right because even though the island is small each side has their own little microclimate and that's for all islands in hawaii so on oahu you have the leeward side which is drier more sunny you have the windward side which is wetter and more green it also depends on where your job is which i'm going to touch on a bit later but even though the island is small traffic can be horrible at least that's what people say because of covet um people have the same homes traffic to honolulu has not been bad but most jobs are in honolulu so traffic towards the city would be more congested one important thing of getting stuff done in hawaii is to actually be in hawaii so if you're on the mainland or somewhere else in the world and you're trying to either get a job or find a place it's probably not going to work you have to be in the island the first thing people ask is are you on the island yes or no um if not then call us when you're back on the island so when we moved here it was only demi who had a job because he's a teacher he made a whole video about how he got the job so we'll link that down below as well but i did not so that was kind of the leap of faith we're taking and i believe most people are taking that when moving to the islands i do want to say that denny and i both have jobs that are high in demand he's a teacher and hawaii needs teachers i work in health care so there's always job opportunities for us so just to talk about my own experience i did not find any difficulty finding a job here in the two weeks of quarantine i send out my resume to a bunch of employers and i got three offers in the first two weeks so it wasn't that difficult for me but again our jobs are high in demand the cost of living is higher here but you don't necessarily get paid more that's also something to think about so your lifestyle financial wise will change at least for us it did so about the change of experience you will have moving to the islands um i guess number one is that you might experience some pushback from some of the locals here in hawaii i would advise to read up on the history of hawaii in america which is pretty dark there are museums here where you can go to we'll link some good ones down below as well the locals might experience newcomers as coming to the island using the island and then leaving quickly so just remain open um and respectful and read up on your history the next thing is prepare for grocery costs they are expensive so we did budget to spend double than what we would spend in orlando if you guys want a more in-depth cost analysis of like how much it would cost in hawaii or a comparison between orlando and hawaii will gladly do that just let us know that would be interesting um but groceries are definitely more expensive they might even look old because they've been imported but they do have local fresh fresh vegetables in certain grocery stores but they're more expensive than imported foods from the mainland one other important thing to think about is that hawaii is really far away i believe it's one of the most isolated chain of violence on the planet so don't expect family friends to visit you as often as you think they would and it's probably better to have some a small chunk of money in case you want to see your family friends or a case of emergency because plane tickets are also not really cheap even though people say hawaii is paradise and it certainly looks like it but you're just going to work here like anywhere else and it's not like people are sipping there my ties here on waikiki beach um even though you can do that on the weekends but you're just gonna have work days here people work really hard um because cost of living is so high is definitely a vacation island but life will not always feel like you're on vacation being said there is a lot to do here in hawaii danny and i are always talking about how we can spend years exploring all the islands and then still not see everything so moving here there won't be a lot of nightlife you gotta be honest but there are so many cool things to do but it's mostly outdoors like hiking water sports like kayaking surfing paddle boarding snorkeling it's all outdoors and it can be free right so that's the benefit of living here you'll never run out of things to do but that being said the culture here in the island is slow it's slow paced um which is definitely benefit for us um you'll notice that if you can even tell by how people are driving it's slower people aren't honking um people dress way more casual than on the mainland so that's a plus there are so many topics to cover about hawaii let us know what you want us to talk about next and we'll be happy to make
