so this animal science program is really unique because they don't just focus on you forming connections with your fellow classmates they focus on you becoming really close with your faculty and just not being afraid or hesitant to contact them if you have any questions they also really hone in on getting connected with industry so if you know you know that you're interested specifically in beef production and that's what you want to go into then they find beef producers to come in and talk in your classes so that way you can start getting introduced to that that whole livestock production scenario because you get a lot of knowledge and it's not just classroom knowledge you get a lot of hands-on knowledge with all the labs all of the animals that are available and the instructors really hone in on trying to give you skills that are gonna make you successful out in the real world outside of just the classroom setting so on a campus farm we have a little bit of everything so we have some cattle and we even have one that's cannulated and we've had students from high school freshmen all the way through graduate students that have worked with this cannulated cow just doing different projects checking out rumen fill and rumen fluid and the different microbes that grow in there so they've learned a lot from the hard science side all the way through it's just really cool to get to stick your hand inside of a cow so one of my favorite nights was actually lamb night I stayed with a friend here in Fayetteville and we just went every couple of hours out to the farm and checked on the sheet we did get to watch the babies jump in and playing around and just check on the news and make sure that everything was going okay so it was really cool to get that experience of actually being on a farm about having to live on a farm so going into the animal science program I had a lot of small animal experience I worked in an animal clinic and kennels reception tech I knew that I wanted to be a veterinarian but I knew I needed to gain some laboratory experience in some large animal experience and that's what I went in to do actually worked in the genetics lab a little bit which was really neat getting to do lots of just some pipette work and titrating and some things I've never done as far as lab work experience because research is very important going into the vet school they want to see that the I think the lab is where they really integrate hard bench science with animal sciences so this is really cool cross but to me being on the farm and using your biology and chemistry and skills like that that you're gonna we got to learn everything from bone structure all the way into muscles and organs in the way that they all kind of functions together so we got to look at some actual bones from livestock but then we also got to cut into some organs like brains livers kidneys so that was kind of cool just to just to learn about something in a classroom setting from a textbook and then apply it in a laboratory scenario where you got to actually cut into something and see how it works it was a small close-knit group the teachers all knew each other all the students knew each other is very very homey I thought it wasn't big and scary like the chemistry or biology majors it was very it was very friendly it was a it was a fun place to be
