hi all I'm uh Barry Lynn and uh executive director of the open markets Institute now I'm actually not going to finish it up Margarita is going to do that in a moment I just have a about three or four minutes of of of comments um you know it's really great to see you all today I mean there's so many friends and allies in this room that we've worked with over the years and it was a really great honor to be able to witness this conversation today you know about how to ensure a democratic stable Cooperative European economy and Society able to help promote peace and Justice here and around the world for decades to come you know as we heard many times today this is an extremely sobering moment in the [Music] world but if we Face the threats honestly move forward with full confidence of ultimate Victory we have an unprecedented opportunity both to manage the threats and to rebuild our societies economies and democracies on a far stronger Foundation you know I know this task sometimes seems daunting but we should also be clear as we have heard so often today there is no need to develop any new science or any new ideology or any new policies really on the contrary we only need remember first principles you know remember our own histories consider coal and steel that agreement from 75 years ago that Foundation of European union and European democracy was also the first formal effort by nation states to share control over industrial corporations and the first formal effort to regulate industrial competition Jean Monae himself called col and steel Europe's first antitrust law so your whole modern history is here to serve as a guide and Europe is is not alone the US has for many years been a bad partner we have been selfish we have been bullying we have been deluded and at and hubristic all at the same time but President Biden is driving a radical change a revolutionary change in policy and philosophy I personally am confident this is going to continue in 2025 I hope Europeans are fully ready to take full advantage of this opportunity in 2025 because we in the US must also be honest that we also can't do this alone and if things go wrong in November well it's all that much more important that Europe be fully able to protect itself which is why today's conversation is so fantastically important you know building and protecting democracy has never been easy but as we have done in even more difficult periods in the past we will succeed again today and as today's conversation showed so many times we are in fact already winning today so I just wanted to say thank you all for your leadership and uh you know to quote Sven uh you know thank everybody here for moving from being Advocates of change to being aent of change and now [Applause] Margarita okay I have the really tough uh position of closing us I'm also standing in your way to lunch and then I'm following Barry so this is quite a difficult position I'm facing myself um but I just wanted to remind us why we are here uh Our intention as the organizations that put this event together was to pierce the competition bubble to bring forth not academic or abstract considerations of the value of comp of competition but rather the stories about how it impacts real people how it impacts workers how it impacts food prices how it impacts sustainability we see that what we are facing right now are immense challenges um these challenges we find are either driven or created by corporate power in the face of these concerns uh there are those and especially corporate lobbyists who are saying that what we need is a deregulatory competitiveness agenda this deregulatory agenda would uh fight back against measures that we have heavily fought for that protect worker safety that protect environmental standards that protect the due diligence obligations of big corporations these companies also want to receive more subsidies without having an increased responsibility towards the public and they want to soften antitrust and competition enforcement for themselves so that they can grow and become themselves monopolies this is very obviously the false solution this is what we've heard all morning that Monopoly power hurts us and we need to fight against it what we have tried to do with our Manifesto and also with today's event is to also lay out that there's a very a very clear and very doable alternative Vision one that will actually make our economies better that will protect our workers and that will deliver more competitive economy we heard today many great uh suggestions about how this could be done uh we heard about how it is about more than competition policy how we need to talk about collective bargaining rights how we need to talk about trade we also heard time and again that we need a market investigations tool this is a very clear message that I take from this conference today we also heard from Yannis and I really have to highlight this that competition policy doesn't need an overhall reform to be able to include wi societal goals like sustainability like workers rights so we can change this and we can take this into the next few years to adopt real change that will impact people's real lives I think it's clear that we are at a tough time for the EU uh the next EU institutions will probably look somehow different than they are right now I still hope that they will not be as far right or the turn to the far right won't be as Extreme as we um as we see that could be coming but the overall the institutions will face crucial choic and there are two different agendas that are on the table here we hope that they will take the one that will prioritize people and that's what we want to do with our manifest and that's Pro that's what we set out to do in the next five years as well and with our own work uh so with this I want to thank everyone that helped us organize I want to thank everyone that came uh and I think we can go for lunch
