The reason I began interest in animal science really just was I grew up with lots of animals and so it was kind of like always a yes animal science never what else am I going to do and specifically pre-vet because I like the medical aspect of animal science and I like working with animals and helping make them feel better. About the program I liked that there were actual like animals on campus that you could work with. They have the Raptor Center and like the cows and the pigs on campus and I never really worked with cows or pigs before, plus the saint paul campus is beautiful and it really made me feel very much at home. I grew up on my family's dairy farm so animal science is definitely something that's been in my blood since the day I was born. So it was just the logical choice to me to continue with that as my field of study in college. The things that stand out the most to me would probably be there's different tracks that you can do in animal science and it's definitely a good set of diverse emphases you can have within the major and they give you the opportunity to choose what you want to focus on and that helps if you have an idea of what you want to do in your career and be prepared for going into that area. I would have to say the best part about being an animal science student is working with the animals and working with the teachers. I've gotten to know some really cool teachers here some that have different fields through the major that I didn't even know existed. All the professors and students in the major are just very friendly and if you make an effort to get to know them and reach out to them they're going to make an effort to get to know you back and they'll go out of their way to help you out. Animal science helps prepare you for many different fields through the use of offering very general introductory courses. This major just dove so much deeper into animal science than what I realized you could do. For me it always was animal science means you're going to become a veterinarian, so through the coursework I learned I could do that or I could do nutrition or I could look at behavior and welfare of animals and like why that's important. My experience in animal science has prepared me for the difference that I want to make in the world because of how the classroom work has opened up my mind to all the different ways there are to look at animal science. You know there's so many different issues that it's facing and so many different approaches that there are to solve them, so really having a more holistic understanding of the way things really are and then also all the connections that I've made has prepared me to be part of addressing those issues and making the field of animal science the best that it can be to serve the world.
