- The study of animal science is a really broad subject. We cover everything from reproduction, nutrition, genetics, animal husbandry, all the way down to businesses and practical applications. Animal science is fun to me because I've always had that interest in working with livestock and that hands-on background growing up, we always had all kinds of livestock and critters running around the house. So for me, it was just a natural extension to be in animal science and get to learn all that stuff. And kind of the explanation of why it all happens. You start out with introduction to animal science and then you kind of advance from there. You go to principles of livestock nutrition and then applied nutrition, where you actually learn the hands-on basics of formulating a ration. All the way to reproduction where you learn how animals reproduce. And then you have anatomy and physiology. You also get lots of hands-on experience within the classes in general and at the purebred units. So for me, I've been able to experience both those opportunities in our introduction to animal science class. We actually go out to the units and we explain why we do certain practices, and why it's necessary and the science behind it. The facilities that Oklahoma State has to offer include all the major species of livestock, we have diary, beef, horse, swine, and sheep and goats. And getting to go to those facilities for classes allows you to get that outside experience. It's one thing to sit in a classroom and learn everything, but it's really awesome to get to go out there and actually draw blood on sheep. Or do body condition scoring on cattle. I chose Oklahoma State, and specifically CASNR because when I came on a prospective student tour, I felt welcomed. It was just so warm and friendly and such a family-type atmosphere, and then we sat down and talked about all the opportunities I would have here. And I knew that they were exponentially greater than anywhere else I had been. I would tell students thinking about getting an animal science degree that they need to look at the opportunities they can get. The experiences you can get with undergraduate research, our competitive judging teams, leadership positions and different clubs and organizations we have here on campus. The animal science program is very diverse. You can get jobs from A all the way to Z. It's pretty interesting to see, we have alumni all across the country doing things within the animal science industry and even outside the industry. But they've all come through OSU CASNR and animal science. It's exciting as a student to visit those alumni and see where they've ended up, and see where a degree in animal science took them.
